Chapter 214: To please the one you love (3)

"Mother, you may sit down instead of pacing back and forth. You are starting to make me dizzy," Helena said, looking away from her mother.

Renee continued to move from right to left. "It’s been so long since your sister has been home. We must be here to greet her. Are you certain that her room is just as she left it?"

"Yes. Honestly, I can’t tell if that is a good or bad thing. I wouldn’t mind if you changed up the decor in my room every once in a while after I leave. Though it would be good to come back to see the memories. What I was like as a child," said Helena.

"Does that mean you consider yourself a child now?" Renee asked as the way the room looked now was not long decorated by Helena.

"Oh, when will Hazel come? I have to bear all of your father’s teasing by myself. Why can’t I be like Hazel and move in with my future husband? You know, to get ready for my new life. We won’t share a room together," Helena promised. She can’t be scolded if one of them were to sleep walk to the others bed.

"It is not going to happen. The wedding is almost here and the big move to the countryside will be right after. Allow us to have more time with you before we have to send you off. We’ll have to travel if we want to see you. Oh dear," Renee said, feeling tears coming on.

"Mother, please don’t cry because then I will want to cry. If father sees us crying then he will cry. Think of what Hazel will walk into," Helena said, standing up from her seat to comfort her mother. "I will visit as much as I can and there is a room for you to use whenever you come to visit," Helena promised.

Helena was also trying to hold herself together as she also thought about having to be away from her family after her wedding. She had always imagined that she would stay in Lockwood after her wedding and be somewhere close to Hazel to see each other’s families grow.

"Thank goodness. Hazel is here to save the day," Helena said, wiping away the escaped tear from her cheek. "Remember to smile, mother. We can’t let Hazel see us like this."

"Are my eyes alright? They feel like a mess. Should I run to clean up? Why are they yelling?" Renee questioned, confused by all the yelling she heard the second the carriage entered her gates. "Helena," she reached for her daughter’s hands. "Is it normal for them to be this way?"

Helena was just as confused as her mother. "I don’t know. I will get father."

Renee tried not to think too much of it since she couldn’t hear what the guards were saying. Maybe they were instructing the guards around her home to take a position to protect Hazel. She walked toward the opened door to greet Hazel but her heart felt like it sank when the carriage door opened.

"Hazel," she whispered, startled by the sight of Kenneth holding her daughter and there looked to be blood.

Renee ran outside, not caring about how she looked as she did. "What happened? Were you attacked?"

"I called for a doctor but we must send him away. Is there a doctor your family can trust? Is there Renee?" Kenneth yelled though he didn’t mean to, but this was urgent and she hadn’t answered him fast enough.

They had to take care of Hazel but at the same time, they needed to try their best to keep what happened a secret. There was a lot of rushing to get this done.

"Y-Yes. There is," Renee said, trying to think of the name. "Send for the family doctor. Tell him that it is urgent and I will pay handsomely if he drops everything to be here," she ordered one of her guards.

"I need somewhere to set her down and then we can talk about what happened. Not right here," Kenneth said as he didn’t know who could be trusted here.

Renee looked at Hazel first. Hazel’s right hand was grabbing a handful of Kenneth’s shirt as if she was clinging to him for dear life. "Follow me. Close the gates. Do not allow anyone other than the doctor inside and no one is to leave."

Renee tried not to panic since Hazel needed her right now and whatever it was that Kenneth was trying to hide could not get out. Renee led the way to a guest room they could use and as she led Kenneth, her mind would not go from Hazel’s stained dress.

Renee hoped that she had guessed it wrong. She hoped that there was some kind of attack and it was someone else’s blood on Hazel. Maybe the doctor was for someone else.

Renee opened the door and made way for Kenneth to enter to put Hazel down. She closed the door to give Hazel privacy. "Did... Did she lose a baby?" She asked, assuming the worst as that was where her thoughts led her.

Kenneth nodded his head. He wasn’t able to say the words now just like he couldn’t when it happened in the carriage. "Can we trust everyone who saw her arrive? We should try to keep this to ourselves. The court will try tearing her apart. Even men outside the palace will speak of her."

"I trust most of my servants and those who I am uncertain about will be paid. What about the men who escorted you here?" Renee questioned as she walked to the side of the bed to comfort Hazel. freёweɓnovel.com

"They are men loyal to me and one that is loyal to the king. They won’t say a word about this to anyone. I am only concerned about your servants. There is some risk to hiding this-"

"I don’t care. Protecting my daughter matters most to me. I will face the consequences should any come. You understand that don’t you?" Renee thought of Linda. Kenneth should understand then.

"I do," Kenneth replied as he would do what was best for his children without caring about the punishments. "She needs to be cleaned out of the dress. Would you like me to find a maid?"

Renee sat down on the bed and answered, "No. I will do it myself. Thank you for bringing her to us, Kenneth. I owe you more than I can repay you. I will clean her up. Please find Nathan and tell him what happened. Helena went for him."

Renee couldn’t have anyone else see Hazel as she was now. It was a vulnerable moment for any woman so they had to keep Hazel away from too many eyes. Renee would have never imagined that there would be a day she had to clean her daughter up like this.

"Then, excuse me," Kenneth responded. He knew that Hazel was better in her mother’s hands and Renee would be better to comfort Hazel or reassure her that everything was going to be fine. He had to work with Nathan fast to keep this a secret.

"When you are ready to speak, I am here Hazel. Alright? I will run some warm water and get a cloth to clean you up. So," Renee paused, looking away from Hazel to hide her tears. They all needed to be strong to help Hazel. "Tell me whatever you need."
