The King's Unbreakable Wife-Chapter 218: Loss (3)
Chapter 218: Loss (3)
"Kenneth, you’re putting the worst possible thoughts about my wife in my head so say something to calm my thoughts at least. Wouldn’t you be desperate to know why you are standing before me if you were in my position? Speak," Tobias ordered Kenneth.
"Tobias, go with him and hear about it when you are in the carriage," Edgar said, helping Kenneth. He trusted that Kenneth had a good reason.
Kenneth was in the small circle of men Edgar trusted in the palace. He would also not speak of too much in the palace because the walls did have ears. There were a few secret passages that even Tobias or his father would not have found as yet.
Tobias pinch his nose. These two didn’t understand it because it wasn’t their woman involved, but standing around here asking Kenneth to speak wasn’t working in his favour as he was still quite in the dark about what might have happened with Hazel.
"Fine. Let us leave in a carriage. I hope you don’t regret being silent for so long. Excuse me Edgar but I now have more important matters to tend to so you can take a cigar and leave," Tobias said, walking around the large table to go with Kenneth.
Kenneth led the way out of the room but then stopped when he opened the doors and walked behind Tobias. "You must not speak of where you are going. No attention must be brought to this."
Tobias didn’t like how serious Kenneth was as it meant something bad had happened with Hazel. He already regretted sending her off even though he knew nothing about why Kenneth was there. He just had a bad feeling that he could not ignore.
Tobias’s anger was close to snapping with Kenneth having them walk before speaking but Kenneth had always been this way. Kenneth wasn’t the first or last person to think that the palace walls had ears.
"Do I need to gather an army?" Tobias asked, preferring the army come with him now instead of having to send for it. "Or my sword?"
"I would have called upon mine if that were the case. All you need to do at the moment is come with me without saying anything. I shall tell you everything from the beginning to the end. You’ll thank me later for not sharing it with you inside of here. I wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t necessary," said Kenneth.
"Forgive me for when it comes to my wife my temper cannot be stopped. I will wait," Tobias replied, holding in his brewing anger for now. "Is she safe? Tell me that at least so I can relax a bit."
Kenneth nodded his head. Hazel was the most safe she could be by being with her family. It was far better than here as she had peace to properly come to terms with what happened.
"That’s good," Tobias sighed in relief. His anger wasn’t gone yet but he was starting to calm himself. Panic and fear were starting to take over the anger.
Tobias and Kenneth made it out the front door toward the carriage that Kenneth had used to take Hazel out of the palace. Kenneth opened the door for Tobias to enter first, looking around for those watching Tobias.
As soon as Tobias stepped inside, something caught his eye. "Is that blood?"
There looked to be a smudge of blood on the carriage seat.
"Kenneth-"
Kenneth pushed Tobias in and entered the carriage before Tobias could be loud with his questioning. He would apologise for how he handled the king later. He was so focused on getting Hazel inside and then returning to the palace that he didn’t have a maid properly clean the seat.
The handkerchief his wife gave him didn’t do the best job of cleaning up the seat.
"Take us to the Wallaces."
"Kenneth, we’re in the carriage now so tell me before I lose my mind," Tobias pleaded as there were all sorts of thoughts going through his head.
If he was made to wait any longer he would grab Kenneth’s sword and get the answers out from Kenneth by other means.
"The queen had a miscarriage. She would have been seen by a doctor at this point and resting. I suggested that we keep this matter from reaching the court’s ears for the sake of the queen. Now is not the time for anyone to be hard on her. I apologise for keeping it from you this long but I couldn’t take the risk of someone overhearing," Kenneth explained.
"I’m sorry for your loss," Kenneth said, reaching forward to pat Tobais’s shoulder. "The queen is... you will need to do your best to comfort her. She looked to be in shock at first and couldn’t respond to me. I think you and her mother are the best people to help her with this."
Tobias stared at Kenneth, not believing the words that were coming out of his mouth. A child he had with Hazel was gone? It was a surprise that she was pregnant as well as learning that she lost the baby.
Tobias lowered his head. He thought about what she must have felt knowing that she had just lost a baby. It didn’t need to be said too often that they both looked forward to having a child."She had to go through that alone while I was focused on the kingdom."
"You can’t blame yourself. We can’t always be at our wife’s side. It’s not good if the two of you are blaming yourself. It might be wrong of me to say but I need you to come to terms with this before you reach the Wallace home. The queen needs to heal and she is worried about your reaction. If you might be angry," said Kenneth. freewebnσvel.cøm
Tobias couldn’t believe that was what Hazel feared. How could he possibly be upset with her or blame her at a time like this? All he could think of doing was apologise for not finding a way to leave the palace to travel with her to see her family. He should have been there to comfort her.
He owed her a thousand apologies.
"Ha," Tobias chuckled. "What am I to make of myself when my wife thinks I would be angry with her?"
"It is not that she doesn’t know you will understand that it was out of her control. The queen’s emotions are all over the place right now. She is placing the blame on herself and because she wanted to give you a child, she is worried that you might not take the news well."
"You must understand the fragile state that she is in. Feeling like she disappointed everyone," Kenneth said, hoping this would change what Tobias thought. "Calm her nerves."
Kenneth was only repeating what he was told by Renee so that when Tobias saw Hazel, he knew of everything that happened. He could have left out the part about Hazel being worried about Tobias’s reaction but he had a feeling that once Hazel saw Tobias, she might try to avoid his gaze. It was best Tobias knew the cause of it.
"I will look around for whether there might be someone involved in this. First her maid and now this. There might be someone after the queen," Kenneth said, more suspicious after thinking about it on the ride to the palace. "There needs to be more people checking what goes into her food and being careful about who is around her."
Tobias smiled as thoughts of killing everyone in the palace filled his mind. If someone had dared to cause Hazel to lose their child, there would be no stopping what he would do.
Kenneth noticed how Tobias’s hands shook and if the king wanted to go toward who he thought was behind this, Kenneth wouldn’t stop him. No one would be able to stop Kenneth if it happened to his wife or daughter. There was a different kind of anger to come over you when it came to your wife and children.
"I will look into it as you must tend to the queen. I can call for Linda if you want more people who may be able to distract Hazel and cheer her up," said Kenneth.
Tobias looked away from the stained carriage seat to Kenneth. Had Hazel left with anyone else, he couldn’t be certain they would have been quick to think to keep this matter private. He owed Kenneth for what he did.
’Thank you, Kenneth. I apologise for my anger. Even though you might understand how impatient I was, I should have known you were putting Hazel’s privacy first. Should the Hensons ever need something, please tell me," Tobias offered.
"My family wants for the Castros to be safe," Kenneth answered. Again, there was nothing he wanted from this. He would be going against what he swore to and the type of man he wished to stay if he asked for something from the king or queen. "Hazel is like family to me. A second daughter with how much she has been in my care."
Kenneth continued to say, "I am not always in the palace to watch over her as I have had enough feuds from being there and it is my time to be with my family. I am asking for one favour. Please take care of her."
