Chapter 217: Loss (2)

"Is her daughter missing or did she run off to get married? Why are they bringing this to me instead of settling it with the town guards? Fools," Tobias muttered, rubbing his aching neck where there was pain. "I should have left with Hazel."

"You should have and not called me here," said an unhappy Edgar. "Go to her so that I can go home. When you got married, I had hoped it meant that I wouldn’t be bothered by you. Bored of her already?"

"Of course not. There isn’t anyone that I love to be around more than Hazel. I’m just bored that she isn’t here so thank you for coming," said Tobias, appreciating the company.

"You said that it was important. You disturbed my day. If there was a spare prince around this palace, I would have thrown you out of the window by now. I am leaving," Edgar announced, standing up from his seat.

Edgar had better things to do at home than be in the palace to keep Tobias entertained since Hazel was out of the palace. It was about time Tobias got a dog or new friends.

"No no," Tobias replied, reaching his hand out. "There is something that I called you here for. A case that I want you to take on. You’ll be happy to get rid of the people involved. I’m thinking of taking away the baron’s title because of what I am hearing he is getting himself into and William Lancaster is involved."

Edgar stopped as it was indeed interesting. He wasn’t fond of either man as they were nothing more than disgusting bastards. One was jealous of him and the other was always begging.

"See," Tobias pushed the papers toward Edgar. "It was worth you coming here. I couldn’t have sent this by just anyone and you wouldn’t have allowed for the court to enter your gates. Maybe I could have sent Mark. I happen to like him."

"Don’t send anyone to my estate. If I find anything on the two of them, will you kill them? It is known that William buys women from their fathers to clear debts. That should be enough to get him," Edgar said, picking up the paper to read what was already found. "There is nothing important here. Who gathered this?"

"William must be making friends in the court so they have not brought something to have the guards go after him. That is why I am giving this to you. You hate him so you will go out of your way to find something to bring him in. This would be one less man hurting the kingdom that I need to worry about. Do well and I will reward you," said Tobias.

"You can’t afford to reward me. Seeing them hang is enough for me. If that is all, then I am leaving," Edgar said, still in a hurry to leave.

"I am bored of the palace, Edgar. It is draining and I need a distraction," Tobias confessed, hoping it would convince Edgar. Being king did not suit him but he had no choice. "I am drowning in work that I don’t want to do so before I think of running away again, please sit a little longer. I have new cigars that I am willing to share."

"Nothing about you has changed. After becoming king and someone’s husband. You’re still the same annoying depressed bastard. I am going to offer you an hour of my time. Nothing more since Alfred is home alone," Edgar said as he returned to his seat.

"Home alone? You have servants and guards all over the estate. At this point, why don’t you just get married to your estate or Alfred since you are always there? Or better yet, Linda Henson. You know that she is still in love with you. Right?" Tobias asked as it was hard to miss. "Why not try her? She wouldn’t annoy you."

"I don’t care," Edgar replied. "Where are the cigars?"

"Forget about the cigars for a moment, Edgar. Think about how important it is that you wed. You need someone to take over the estate and it needs to be someone who benefits you. Linda is better than most young ladies in town so why not-"

"I’m going to strangle you if you don’t stop trying to get everyone to marry simply because you are now married. You’ve done it with me, Rafael, and now Dominic says you’re trying to convince him to marry someone. You’re going to lose friends," Edgar warned. He was going to be the first one to start Tobias losing friends.

If Edgar cared to be married, he would have done it by now. Forcing him to find a wife only ended in him not courting anyone. Tobias should speak with his mother to know.

"Fine, I give up for now, but don’t get angry with me when you realise how good it would have been to marry into the Henson family. Then your army and the Hensons’ army would be on my side. I have the cigars here," Tobias said, opening a drawer. "I haven’t smoked since Hazel came into the palace."

"Because you’re a love-sick fool doing everything to please her. How is the queen fairing with the palace? Have you killed anyone?" Edgar asked as it was bound to happen. Tobias needed to protect Hazel from all the evil that was there and it could only be done by killing someone.

"A few. Hazel doesn’t know about it yet and I don’t want her to know. I am thinking of killing Daniel because he saw her this morning and said that she didn’t look like a woman I would normally spend time with. Keep your relatives out of my palace, Edgar. Before they end up missing."

"You’ll be doing me a favour if you kill him," Edgar replied.

If Tobias didn’t do it, Edgar was going to be the one to deal with Daniel in the future and that meant Daniel would be seriously wounded or dead.

"Should we have a drink-"

The study doors opening caused Tobias to stop talking.

"Kenneth, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be sitting down with the Wallaces? You know since I sent you to protect my wife? Why aren’t you at my wife’s side?" Tobias asked, accidentally crushing the cigar he was holding.

Tobias gave Kenneth a simple task and yet, here Kenneth stood before him. Tobias looked at the large clock in the room. It wasn’t more than two hours since Hazel left the palace. "I hope you haven’t lost your mind and left my wife somewhere. I trusted you."

Kenneth looked at Edgar. The king trusted the duke but this was to be a private matter. "Come with me. There is something we must talk about in the carriage. Just the two of us."

"If it concerns Hazel, be out with it now. I trust Edgar. Now!" Tobias demanded, his voice echoing in the room.

"You know that I believe these palace walls have ears listening. It is something that cannot be said here. The queen is waiting for you so please come quietly and I will tell you in the carriage," said Kenneth.
