Chapter 228: Secret exposed (5)

"Promise me that you won’t kill anyone today, Tobias. You’ve had enough blood on your hands in the last hours. I think we need to have a proper talk about all the people you have killed. The ones that I am not aware of," Hazel said.

Hazel was certain that Arlo wasn’t the first Tobias had killed. He had confessed regretting telling her what he did to Arlo but she was going to know when she stepped out of the room.

"You don’t need to be hearing about death. I want to save you from the gruesome stories. I don’t want you frightened of me for what you would hear," Tobias replied, squeezing her hand.

"I am sure that it will surprise me but I want to know from you. I don’t want to be caught off guard by anyone about who you might have killed. I should have been aware of who our enemies are," Hazel said as she could watch out for who they were close to.

"I’ve said time and time again that you will not always be there to protect me, Tobias. You have a kingdom to look after so it takes up all of your time. Stop thinking of how you should have been near when I fainted and then follow the doctor to stop him from spreading the news. You can’t be everywhere so just be honest with me," Hazel requested.

The least he could do was tell her of the enemies he discovered.

"Very well," Tobias reluctantly agreed. "And you must share who troubles you. You have been holding back on what you spoke about with my mother before you fainted."

"It was nothing. My fainting didn’t have anything to do with her. Just talk about having an heir soon," Hazel added as she quickly realised that she was going to lie to him. "She helped get me to my room and she didn’t go to the court to share the news. Though she was a bit pushy about an heir, I am not upset with her."

"I know that the longer it takes for me to have an heir, the weaker my position as queen gets. Will I keep hearing about other women or will I join the small group of women removed as queen? That is why I must-"

"That rushing might be what is affecting you. That is why I have been saying to wait for the right time. All of the rushing is what adds pressure to you and they are placing it to only you. We should go somewhere to take a break. What?" Tobias asked as Hazel frowned right after the suggestion.

Hazel bitterly smiled as a trip made her think of the last time she tried to go on one. "I don’t want to go on a trip just yet. I need a bit more time."

"It will not happen again," Tobias promised despite having no control over it. "Just to be careful, I am adding more people to inspect your food and more guards. This may not be your doing."

Hazel thought it was a good idea to have her food checked but it wasn’t like someone was trying to kill her at the moment. How would checking food tell if someone was trying to stop her from baby unless there was someone around to watch when the food was being prepared but then, how could they trust that person?

Nothing about her food tasted different from the time she entered the palace and it was always tasted before she ate. Hazel did not want to follow the idea of having a pregnant woman taste her food. She was against it from the beginning and even more now after knowing what it felt like to lose a baby.

As Hazel got closer to where the men in the court had gathered, she felt nervous once more. She already knew they would question her health and speak of mistresses but she was still worried.

Tobias did not let go of Hazel’s hand as they entered the room often used to discuss war. "Do not speak until we have taken our seats," he ordered before mouths could open.

The men present were eager to speak and Tobias was not eager to listen. Tobias planned for this meeting to be quick so Hazel wouldn’t be tortured for hours. He was only here for her and he was still regretting the decision.

Tobias helped Hazel to her seat and then sat down before her.

"Your Majesty," Saul spoke first before his voice would not be heard. "You have kept us waiting long to hear about the queen’s health. Not to forget that you killed her doctor. Some are thinking that you killed him to hide something important about the queen. It is believable since the doctor shared that she lost a baby."

"We want to know if the queen can have a child," Hans jumped in, unable to wait his turn.

"I killed the doctor for disobeying my order. It was not within his job to run to the court to share about the queen’s health. That is for me to bring up to you if I want," Tobias answered.

"You didn’t answer if she can have a child," Hans added.

"How would I be able to answer that? I am not some kind of God. Being king doesn’t come with that kind of power. If all of you would stop harassing her about a child, perhaps there would be one right now," Tobias said, tapping his fingers on the table as it kept his anger at bay.

"The queen will have your future prince and princesses, but they won’t come if you hurry her," said Tobias.

"It would be wonderful if the queen would bear your heirs but we must think of bringing more women to your side-"

"Like women from your families? I already know who you would want to suggest. Why are you going so hard for me to take other women? It would please many of you to hear that my wife can’t bear children. Since you are all gathered here, I will say it one last time. My heirs will only come from my wife," Tobias announced.

"And what if those heirs won’t come for years? What will you do then? You must consider all that could happen, my king. What if we wait long and the child doesn’t make it past winter? Must we wait again?" Franklin questioned. "I love the queen but we must think of the kingdom."

Hazel was surprised to hear someone announce that they loved her when all they did was complain and no one had ever come to her to share that they were on her side.

Hazel squeezed Tobias’s hand like he had done to her earlier. "We shouldn’t fight over this when there is much for everyone to do. If I fail to have a child for the king as we go forward then I will vote for another woman to enter the palace. Until that time comes, there is no need for all of you to make noise near my bedroom. I have nothing more to say."

"There is nothing more to be said unless one of you are bold enough to come to this end of the table to make one of us speak," Tobias challenged.

Franklin cleared his throat, backing down since the queen’s words were enough for now. She couldn’t take it back later on since there were many witnesses.

"We are done here. You can all leave. Try to put all this energy into your positions," Tobias ordered.
