Chapter 39: 39. Making The Hero Looked Like A Useless Piece of Shit

The Goblin King’s roar shook the air itself. It was a primal sound of rage and power that made even the bravest villagers back away in fear.

UBAAASSAAAAAGGGHHHHHHHH!

Rex grinned, recognizing that the threat was likely to mount a formidable defense against those heroes. "Hell yeah... I can’t fucking wait to see it!"

Elliot, to his credit, didn’t back down. The hero stood firm and raised his sword, which shone in the dappled light of the forest.

His jaw was set with determination, and his eyes were focused like someone who had fought monsters before and won. "A goblin king in a situation like this... I shouldn’t let my guard down by a bit because of how strong and dangerous they are."

"EVERYONE...! fall back immediately now!" Elliot shouted, and his voice cut through the panic. "Get the villagers to safety! This one is mine to handle!"

Rex looked closely at Elliot. "I knew it... seems like he’s ’that’ type of hero... a naive fool."

The Goblin King didn’t wait for plans or formations. It charged forward at an unexpected speed for something so big, and the crude bone and metal armor clanked with each loud step.

It held an enormous axe that was stained dark with old blood and had a jagged, cruel blade.

"Come on! I’ll fight you one by one!" Elliot faced the charge head-on.

When their weapons hit, there was a loud noise like thunder, and the shockwaves went through the clearing.

CLAAANGGG!

As Elliot was pushed back several feet, his boots dug trenches in the dirt. His arms were straining against the monster’s raw strength.

"Is that all you’ve got?!" Elliot taunted, his voice strained but strong.

The Goblin King swung again, this time with enough force to split a tree trunk. Elliot rolled over, and the axe hit the ground where he had been standing a moment before.

He came up swinging, and his sword found the weak spot in the king’s armor, cutting a line of black blood across its ribs.

The monster screamed in pain and rage as it pulled its axe free and swung it in a wide arc. Elliot ducked to avoid the blow, which made his hair fly up, and then he stabbed the king in the throat.

That attack should have worked. Elliot’s form was flawless, the angle was ideal, and the opening was evident.

However, a small stone on the ground shifted at the last possible moment, rolling under Elliot’s boot and momentarily off-balance. The thrust missed, making only a shallow cut on the king’s shoulder instead of going through the important area.

Rex smiled to himself from thirty yards away because it was his doing, with his hand slightly outstretched. Telekinesis is a very useful tool when used carefully and manipulatively.

Elliot cursed under his breath and got back into position as the Goblin King took advantage of him. "What the fuck... just happened...?"

The monster then attacked over and over; every swing of its huge axe was strong enough to break stone. Elliot was excellent at parrying and dodging, and his sword work was a blur of defensive moves.

But Rex could see that things were getting worse. Every blocked blow sent vibrations up Elliot’s arms, and every dodge had to be perfectly timed.

The hero was strong, even smart, but the Goblin King was so relentless that it would do anything to stop its enemies.

Elliot saw an opening and took it. He pretended to go left, then turned right and drove his blade toward the king’s open flank.

The strike was perfectly aimed at the space between armor plates, where it would slide between ribs and stab vital organs.

Rex smirks, "I don’t think so..."

And then... a light breeze, not stronger than a breath, caught the blade in the middle of its thrust. Not enough to be seen, but enough to change the angle by an inch.

The sword didn’t go deep, but instead, it scraped along the armor and made another shallow cut. The Goblin King yelled and hit Elliot with its free hand, knocking him back across the chest and sending him flying.

He rolled with the blow and got up with a split lip and dented but still intact armor. "W-What...?! That’s impossible...!"

"Elliot!" Diana’s voice rang out, full of worry.

"I’m fine!" he yelled back, spitting blood and moving forward again. "Get back! I can handle this by myself!"

Rex, on the other hand, could see the truth. Elliot was getting tired, and every attack that should have been the end of the fight somehow missed by the smallest of margins.

To everyone watching, it seemed like bad luck or the Goblin King’s unexpected speed. Rex was the only one who knew the real reason.

The hero pushed himself forward with new strength, his sword trailing light as he used what was clearly a skill.

He screamed, "Heroic Strike!" and his sword glowed with golden energy.

The attack was powerful because it had speed, power, and skill that should have split the Goblin King in half. Rex really thought about letting it land, which would have ended this joke early.

But nope!

This should have gone on longer for his research. The heroes had to be pushed, tested, and made to show what they could really do.

As Elliot’s powerful sword came down toward the king’s head, Rex pushed a pebble near the monster’s foot with just a little bit of force. The pebble shifted to the side, capturing the king’s attention for a fleeting moment, allowing it to shift its weight and raise its axe in a final attempt to block.

BAAMMM!!!

There was an explosion of sparks and magical energy when the weapons hit. The impact knocked both fighters back, and Elliot’s attack spread out, but it left a deep cut in the Goblin King’s axe.

Elliot said, "No way... that’s impossible," in a shocked voice. "That should have killed it with just one clear attack of my skill!"

The Goblin King also seemed surprised that he was still alive. It looked at its broken weapon, then at Elliot, and its evil eyes seemed to show some respect.

The fight would not be an easy win for either of them, just because someone was intervening.

Helena watched with a shocked look that she didn’t expect to feel a magic that felt foreign near the Goblin King. She reasoned that this goblin king was unique in that it possessed a form of magic that allowed it to defend itself against any threat.

"Oh my... The world is becoming increasingly unusual... a goblin with protective magic is quite a novelty." Helena thought to herself while holding her cheek to observe their fight even further.

They went around each other, both breathing heavily and bleeding from many cuts. The clearing had become eerily quiet, with everyone holding their breath as they watched the duel.

Then there was silence, and Diana’s voice broke it. "Hey Elliot! I’m not going to let you do this by yourself!"

"Diana, no! Stay back!" Elliot yelled, but his sister was already on the move.
