Chapter 40: 40. Seems Like I Hit The Hero’s Ego (What a Naive Fool He Is)

An arrow flew by Elliot’s ear and hit the Goblin King in the shoulder dead on. The monster roared and turned to face this new threat, but another arrow hit it in the thigh.

Diana moved forward with her bow drawn, firing shots with perfect accuracy. Every arrow found a weak spot in the king’s armor and hit it, slowly breaking down his defenses.

Elliot yelled, "Diana, get out of here!" as he tried to get in between his sister and the monster.

"Nope! Not happening, brother! We fight it together as a family!" Diana shot three more arrows in quick succession, making the Goblin King raise its arm to protect itself.

Then a blast of light magic hit the monster’s chest, and Lily ran into the fight with her staff raised high. "I’m helping too!"

Elliot and Diana both yelled, "Lily, no!" at the same time.

But the youngest Starlight was already casting her spells, making magical shields that kept the Goblin King away from her siblings. The monster was hit by light bolts that burned its sickly green skin.

"What the fuck is she doing now...?" Rex looked at Lily with a conflicted look. "She’s going to ruin my perfect plan—"

GROOOOOAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!

The Goblin King roared in anger when he saw that he now had to fight three people instead of just one. It swung its axe in a big circle, making all three Starlights run away.

And then... Rex saw his chance and knew how to improve his next plan.

Diana had gone too far, but she was vulnerable because she was too focused on keeping the arrows flying. The Goblin King also saw it and turned to her with murder in its eyes.

The Goblin King raised its axe, preparing to strike.

"With this improved plan... I can probably get their respect for me even higher, and that’s fucking perfect!"

"Here goes nothing...!"

Rex stepped hard on the ground to gain momentum for running faster than ever before, aided by his telekinesis, which propelled him faster than his legs could move.

He got to Diana just as the axe was coming down, tackling her from the side and taking the brunt of a glancing blow to the shoulder.

The edge of the axe cut into Rex’s skin, and pain shot through his body. Not very deep, but deep enough to make him wince in pain. And then the blood on his cut quickly pooled, turning his shirt red.

"W-What...?! Rex!" Diana yelled as they fell to the ground in a tangle of arms and legs. "Why did you do that...!?"

"Stay down!" Rex grunted as he pushed himself up, even though it hurt. His shoulder hurt, but the wound was only superficial and looked worse than it was.

The Goblin King turned to face them and raised its axe to finish them off. Rex stood in front of Diana, ready to make it look like he was going to sacrifice himself.

"I would never do this shit again... that fucking hurt!" Rex thought to himself. "But with this opportunity... they’ll probably be more open to me and even trust me the most!"

Before the blow could land, Lily’s magic hit the monster’s face with a strong burst that made it stagger back.

"Don’t you DARE HURT HIIMMM!!!" Lily screamed, her voice shaking with anger.

Her magic radiated with an intensity Rex had never witnessed before, driven by genuine fear and anger. The Goblin King, seemingly unfazed by the attack, retaliated by striking Lily with the back of his hand, sending her hurtling through the air.

She landed hard and lay still for a moment.

"Lily!!!" Diana exclaimed, rising quickly from her spot. She was torn between rushing to her sister’s side and confronting the monster.

Rex made the choice for her. "Go to her! I’ll put it off!"

"But you’re injured...!"

"Forget about me! Just go save her!" Rex yelled back at her.

Diana hesitated for only a second before running to Lily’s side, cradling her sister, who was groaning but conscious.

Helena watched this scene unfold from across the battlefield with growing horror. This young man, who worked at the inn and seemed like a normal guy, had just put himself in danger to protect both of her daughters.

And what’s even more shocking is that he’s a reincarnator, and she had a lot of bad history about them being cocky and wanting to center everything around him like he’s some kind of a hero.

"This is a real sacrifice... coming from a reincarnator."

"My children... they’re being saved by someone not from this world." Helena thought to herself while both of her hands shook with horror.

Helena saw his shoulder was bleeding, and his face was pale with pain, but he still stood between the Goblin King and her girls. "Maybe I need to be more open to some of the reincarnators who are worthy of respect for their own cause..."

"Rex!" Helena shouted, her voice filled with motherly concern.

She started casting without thinking, and her magic was stronger and more focused than anything she had shown during training.

But before she could cast her spell, Elliot’s furious shout echoed through the clearing.

"Everyone...!!! STAAAND DOOOOWN!" He screamed so loud that it made Helena stop her spell mid-casting.

"This IS my FIGHT...!" The hero’s voice was full of anger and hurt pride. "I don’t need help from civilians or new people!" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Get back! That’s an order from your hero!"

Diana quickly looked up. "Elliot, this Goblin King is too strong for only one person to handle!"

"I told you to fall back!" Elliot’s face was red with anger and shame.

His sisters and a random inn worker were stealing the show from the great hero Elliot Von Starlight, and it seems like Rex’s plan worked to start to show his true colors.

Rex thought to himself while hiding a smile behind his injured expression. "I fucking knew it... this wimp’s pride is easily hurt, and there’s no way he’s someone from this world with that attitude."

"But well... there’s some NPC that acted like that in every game or story, which is fun shit to see them fall down."

The more Rex undermined Elliot’s ego from the shadows, the more he understood the hero’s thoughts. Elliot wasn’t merely focused on protecting his family.

He was trying to prove something, that he could be the hero everyone thought he could be and win the glory all by himself.

And that kind of shit was perfect, just because Rex could deal with it all day long.

"I... am Elliot Von Starlight, and I’m here to save the world from any evil beings, including a goblin king like you!" Elliot starts to do his sword stance.

The Goblin King screamed, "UBASHAAAAAAA!!!"

Elliot charged the Goblin King again, this time with a sword that glowed with golden light. "HAAARRRGGGHHHH!!! I’LL FUCKING KILL YOU!!!"

He attacked more quickly now, fueled by pride and desperation. He was pushing himself too hard to get this over with quickly before anyone else could get in the way.

The Goblin King fought him back with an axe that sang through the air with deadly accuracy. They hit each other at a furious pace, neither giving up.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

"Heh... keep trying harder, you naive fool." Rex said in a low tone.
