Chapter 62: 62. I Wish I Had Popcorn: A Villain’s Review of His Own Attack

Then his foresight kicked in and showed him what would happen in the next ten seconds. He saw Elliot come out of the inn’s main door, sword drawn and face twisted in righteous rage.

Behind him came Evelyn, moving with that supernatural speed that marked her as a reincarnator.

Diana stood on a roof across the square with a bow in her hand and an arrow already nocked.

Helena came out last, and her hands were already crackling with magical energy.

The hero group was getting ready to move.

Rex crouched low on the roof, staying hidden behind the chimney while still being able to see the battlefield below. His foresight was working extra hard now, showing him how the fight would go in different ways.

In most scenarios, the Starlight family would emerge victorious, but there would still be casualties among the villagers. In certain timelines, one of the villagers suffered serious injuries.

Elliot got too sure of himself in one very dark branch and ended up with a bandit’s axe in his ribs.

Rex felt a wave of nausea as he watched Elliot, as usual. "What a fucking loser... why is he always on the brink of death in every fight? Does he really need saving all the time?!"

"Can’t have that." Rex said, "Not yet, anyway."

He took a seat to observe, prepared to intervene should the situation spiral out of control.

"If only I had some popcorn on me... I’d be enjoying this."

...

Elliot ran out into the street, his sword shining in the morning light. The first bandit he saw barely had time to realize he was in danger before Elliot’s sword hit him in the chest.

The Heroic Strike skill made the blow strong enough to lift the man off his feet and send him crashing into a wall.

Elliot shouted, "EVERYONE...! Get inside!" His voice cut through the noise. "Block your doors and make sure to not let any stranger in!"

Three bandits turned towards him, their smiles befitting men who believed they had the advantage due to their numbers. They spread out, weapons raised, in an attempt to surround him.

Elliot didn’t wait for them to get ready. He charged the one on the left, swinging his sword in a wide arc that made the bandit have to block.

The sound of steel hitting steel echoed in the air, but Elliot was already turning, using his speed to spin past the first attacker and slash at the second. The bandit yelled and fell back, blood pouring from a cut on his shoulder.

The third bandit tried to take advantage of Elliot’s back, rushing in with an overhead chop. But a flash of silver flew through the air, and the man suddenly had an arrow sticking out of his thigh.

He fell down screaming, and Diana’s voice could be heard from the roof.

"Be more careful this time, Elliot!"

"I had him!" Elliot shouted back, but his smile showed that he was grateful for the help.

Evelyn moved through the battlefield like a ghost, a blur of motion. Her sword was shorter than Elliot’s and made for speed instead of power.

She used it with the skill of a surgeon. She came up behind a bandit who was trying to set a bakery on fire, and her sword found the space between his ribs before he knew she was there.

She was gone before the body hit the ground and was already on her way to her next target.

Rex was very interested in what she was doing. Even with years of training, no normal person could move as fast as she did.

It had to be a system ability, something that made her body stronger than any other human’s. With her fighting instincts, she was cutting through the bandits like they were made of paper.

Helena stood in the middle of the square, using her body as a place for the villagers to gather as they ran away. She moved her hands in complicated patterns, casting spells with ease.

"Flame Lance!" she shouted, and three flaming spears appeared in the air around her.

With a wave, they all shot forward, hitting different targets. The bandits who were hit fell down screaming, and their clothes caught fire as they tried to put out the flames.

Two bandits tried to sneak up on her from the side, thinking that a mage would be weak up close. They quickly realized their mistake. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Helena’s hand shot out, and the ground under their feet suddenly froze. They fell hard, and before they could get up, sharp stone spikes shot up from the ground and stabbed them.

"Nice try, you lost pigs," Helena said calmly as she turned to look for her next target. "Stone Spikes..."

Diana was showing them why they thought she was the best archer they had ever seen. She gracefully traversed the rooftops, her bow resonating with each shot.

Every shot was perfect. An arrow went through the hand of a bandit trying to break into a house, making him drop his weapon with a scream.

Another person who was pursuing a woman as she fled received an arrow in the knee, causing him to crash face-first into the ground.

A third person who was trying to flank Elliot suddenly got an arrow in the shoulder, which spun him around and left him open for Elliot’s final blow.

Diana shouted, "Three more coming from your left!" and Elliot quickly moved to the side.

It was impressive how well they worked together. They had fought together so often that they knew where each other would be and what they needed.

It was the kind of teamwork that only comes after years of fighting together.

But the bandits weren’t going to give up easily. They had many people on their side, and even though each one of them couldn’t beat the hero party on their own, they were starting to work together to attack.

Five people rushed Elliot from different sides at the same time, forcing him to defend himself. His sword flashed in a complicated pattern, blocking and deflecting, but he was still being pushed back.

"Lightning Bolt!" Helena’s voice cut through the noise, and a crackling stream of electricity shot across the square, hitting one of Elliot’s attackers right in the chest.

The man shook and fell, and smoke rose from his burned armor.

That was the chance Elliot needed. He turned on his Heroic Strike again, and his sword started to glow with golden light.

He swung it in a wide, horizontal arc, and the energy wave that followed the blade hit two more bandits, sending them flying backward with broken ribs and broken weapons.

Evelyn now starts to move like an assassin behind the shadows. Her sword found the throat of another bandit before she disappeared back into the chaos.

The group that had tried to overpower Elliot was either dead or running away in a matter of seconds.

"FORM UP, YOU DAMN PIECES OF TRASH!" Kruger’s voice rang out over the battlefield. "Don’t try to spread out, you pussies!

"Try to use more group tactics like you always do!"

The bandits started to regroup, moving back into tighter groups. It was harder to pick them off one at a time, but area attacks were better against them.

Helena saw the chance right away. Her hands started to glow with a bright blue light, and the air around her got noticeably colder.

Ice crystals formed in the air and began to swirl in a bigger vortex. "It ends here..."

She shouted, "Ice Storm!" and the spell came to life.

A blizzard of razor-sharp ice shards shot out from Helena’s position, covering an area of at least twenty meters. The bandits who had banded together suddenly found themselves in a storm of freezing projectiles and cutting wind. A few fell right away, their bodies torn apart by the ice.

Others staggered back, bleeding from a lot of cuts, and their movements were slowed by the sudden cold.

Diana used the moment to great effect. She shot three arrows at once, which should have been impossible, but she made it look easy, and she did it quickly.

Each arrow hit a different target, and each target fell.

Elliot yelled, "How many are there left?!"

He was out of breath but still ready to fight for more.

"At least fifteen of those bandits are still standing!" Diana said as she looked around the battlefield.

"And they’re getting smarter!"
