Chapter 63: 63. I’ll Let Him Meet His Childhood Crush, and Surprise! Surprise! She’s Mine!

What Diana said was correct. The remaining bandits had stopped attacking and were starting to retreat toward the edge of the village, using buildings and other cover to shield themselves from Diana’s arrows and Helena’s magic.

Even in the middle of the chaos, it was easy to see Kruger because of how big he was. He was swinging that huge war hammer around like it was nothing, and his face was twisted with rage.

He shouted, "So... you’re one of the boys I heard about, eh?!"

Elliot starts to show his sword stances with a fierce look in his eyes. "Yeah, what about it...?"

"You want to be a hero...?" and pointed the hammer at Elliot. "Okay, boy...! Let’s see what you can do when facing a real threat!"

When Elliot heard that, he began to frown, and Rex could see that his pride had overridden his common sense.

Elliot didn’t wait for help or talk to his team for any planning other than just ran straight at Kruger, like a typical main character as always.

"Elliot, wait!" Helena shouted, but it was too late.

Kruger swung his hammer at Elliot, which should have crushed his head. Elliot managed to evade the hammer at the last moment, causing it to collide with the cobblestones where he had been standing.

He swung back at Kruger, aiming for his exposed side, but the bandit leader was faster than he looked. He turned away, and Elliot’s sword only made a small cut across his ribs.

"Hmph! Not bad for a naive kid like you!"

They start to hit each other a lot, with Elliot’s speed against Kruger’s raw strength. It was an impressive show, but Rex knew how it would end.

Kruger had more experience in battle, employed more dirty tricks, and was unafraid to fight to the death, whereas Elliot, despite being skilled, still exhibited a naive hero tendency to hold back and prioritize disabling strikes over lethal ones.

Evelyn also saw the issue. She tried to go around Kruger and hit him from the side, but three bandits stopped her and made her fight them instead.

Diana fired one arrow after another at Kruger, but the large man deflected them with his hammer. The arrows broke against the metal head. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

She was able to get one past his guard and hit him in the shoulder, but he didn’t seem to notice. He pulled it out and kept fighting.

Helena was getting ready to cast another big spell, and her hands were moving in complicated ways, but it would take time. Elliot might not have that time.

From his perch on the roof, Rex saw all of these events happen. His foresight showed him the many possible paths that could lead to different outcomes.

Most of the time, Elliot survived, although with severe injuries. In some cases, Kruger was able to kill someone before anyone could stop him.

"Not yet," Rex said quietly. "I need him to stay alive for a little longer."

But before he could decide whether to get involved, his Foresight lit up with a new warning. A different timeline, in which the inn itself was attacked.

He focused his enhanced perception on the building below him.

There he saw... a single person moving purposefully through the chaos, heading straight for the Broken Wheel Inn.

He was shorter than most of the other bandits and wore a hooded cloak that hid his face. He had two daggers in his hands, and the way he moved made it clear that he had trained for serious combat.

Rex’s foresight told him what would happen. The figure would get to the inn, kick in the front door, and go straight to the private rooms.

Mara and Garrett were still there, and Lily was too.

And as the figure got closer, Rex finally saw his face clearly under the hood.

Marcus.

"What the fuck is he doing here...?"

Rex then realized what he had just planned three days ago. "Ain’t he supposed to lead the attack?!"

"Okay now... he’s fucked!" Rex clenched both his fists.

...

Rex fell off the roof and used his telekinesis to slow his fall and land quietly in the alley next to the inn. He hurried to the front door and got there just as Marcus kicked it open with a loud bang.

He could hear Garrett and Mara screaming inside. Rex pushed through the broken door and saw Marcus coming toward the couple, his daggers shining wickedly in the low light.

Garrett stood in front of Mara with a fishing knife that looked weak compared to Marcus’s weapons. His hands were shaking, but he didn’t give up.

"S-S-Stay back...!" Garrett yelled, his voice breaking. "I w-won’t let you hurt my wife!"

Rex recognized Garrett as a coward, which led him to believe that taking Mara for himself was the right choice all along.

A woman as beautiful as Mara deserved someone far better than this pathetic man who valued fishing over his wife’s safety.

"Hahahahahaha...!" Marcus laughed, but it was a cold sound that wasn’t funny. "A fisherman playing the hero, eh? This will be quick and easy."

He moved forward so quickly that Garrett couldn’t react. One dagger swept toward the older man’s throat.

Rex’s telekinesis stopped the blade in mid-swing, as if it had hit an invisible wall. Marcus’s eyes got bigger because he was confused, and then Rex came into view.

"Okay now... that’s far enough," Rex said in a calm voice. "And it seems like you went overboard with this stupid decision."

Marcus turned to him, and his face lit up with recognition, but then he started to pretend, as he was ordered to by Rex. "Whoa, hey! You’re the one who’s been at the hero party!"

"Yeah," Rex said, stepping in front of Marcus and the couple, knowing that Marcus still acted like he didn’t know him from three days ago.

"Garrett, take Mara to the root cellar and lock the door... Don’t come out until someone from the Starlight family comes to get you."

"But what about you?" Garrett stammered.

"Just get your ass to move now! I’ll be fine." Rex said while doing stretches.

Mara said. "Come on, Garrett! You heard him!"

Mara took her husband’s arm and pulled him to the back of the inn. They went through a door, and Rex heard a heavy bar slide into place.

Marcus watched them leave, then focused all of his attention on Rex. It was hard to tell what he was feeling because his face showed both anger and something else.

And it felt like something more personal.

"You know who I am," Rex said, and it wasn’t a question.

"I know you’re in the way," Marcus said, tightening his grip on his daggers. "Stop with all of this drama now because the boss knew your plan right away by using us all!"

Rex laughed. "I fucking knew it... and it seems like it was a dumb move to try and stab me in the back anyway."

Rex grinned. "I think we have more to talk about than you think..."

"Come with me. I want to show you something."

He turned and walked toward the stairs without looking back to see if Marcus was following. His foresight told him that curiosity would win out over caution, and sure enough, he heard Marcus’s footsteps behind him.

"What the fuck do you want to show to me...?"

They went up to the second floor, and Rex took him to the room where Lily was. He knocked once, letting her know that it’s him.

"Come in!" Lily answered right away, and then he opened the door.

Marcus’s body was already in shock hearing those familiar voices coming from the room, and when they enter the room... both of them can see Lily.

Lily was now dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed with her arms around her knees. When she saw Marcus, her eyes got bigger, and something complicated flashed across her face.

It was recognition, confusion, and a little bit of old pain.

"M-Marcus...?" she said in a quiet voice.

"N-No way..." Marcus stopped in the doorway, and his daggers dropped a little. "L-Lily? Is that r-really you..."

"Wait... now I remember... you’re one of them too... I fucking forgot!" Marcus said while hitting his head softly.

"What are you doing here...?" His eyes moved around the room, taking in the messy bed, Lily’s messy hair, and the close atmosphere. "W-What the fuck...?"

His face went from pale to red as he began to understand what had happened to Lily, and then he started to get angry. "Y-You...!"

Marcus’s voice, barely audible above a whisper, resembled a scream. "What the FUCK did you do to her!?"

"What did you accuse me of?" Rex asked.

"Don’t spill that shit on my face...! You... showing me this, I fucking knew that you are one sly motherfucker!" Marcus said while pointing at him.

Rex shut the door behind them, locking the three of them in the room. "Well... Marcus, I didn’t do anything she didn’t want."

Rex glanced at her. "Isn’t that right, Lily?"

Lily’s face turned red, but she nodded. "Yes... I wanted this... I wanted him."

Marcus looked like he had been hit in the stomach. "No...!"

"No, you don’t understand this situation at all, Lily...! You don’t know what you’re saying!"

"He’s controlling you, he’s—"

"I’m sorry, Marcus... but I already fell in love with him," Lily said, her voice getting stronger.

"I love Rex."
