Chapter 65: 65. When Your Hired Bandit Becomes a Final Boss

Marcus starts banging on the closet with his legs, but then they get tied as well because of Rex’s telekinesis.

"Shh," Rex told the closet. "You should feel honored to get a chance to live by staying there."

"I’ll take care of you tonight."

He then looked at Lily, who was still holding on to him. "Are you all right, baby?"

She nodded her head against his shoulder. "I should feel bad... and maybe I should feel guilty, but I don’t..."

"Is that bad?"

"Nope," Rex said, running his fingers through her hair. "That’s called moving on."

"You chose yourself over someone who never chose you and doesn’t even recognize who you really are." Rex said while caressing her hair.

She pulled back to look up at him, and her eyes were now fierce. "I love you, Rex... You are the only one who could make me feel special and loved."

"I know," he said, kissing her forehead.

And then...

The sounds of battle were starting to change from the outside. The explosions had stopped, and the screaming was getting more organized.

The fight was almost coming to an end.

"Seems like it’s going to be over soon."

Rex’s Foresight suddenly lit up with a warning, showing him something that made his eyes narrow.

Something was going on in the village square below.

And it’s something risky.

He told Lily. "Stay here, alright? You’re not recovered enough."

"Lock the door. I need to see how your family is doing."

"Be careful," she said.

"I’m always careful," he lied and walked to the window. "Oh... and, Lily."

"Hm?"

"You’re not going to tell your family about what happened today here, right...? And also my real powers... they’re telekinesis." Rex tells her the truth right away. "You know what happens when you snitch on me."

Lily nodded while closing both her eyes and opening them again, where Rex could see heart symbols on both of her eyes. "I won’t tell anyone, Rex..."

"Go save the day, my love." Lily smiled widely while closing both her eyes.

...

The view from the roof was very different when Rex got there. Less than ten bandits were present now, with the majority injured and fleeing.

It was clear that the Starlight family had won the fight.

But Kruger wasn’t done yet.

The huge bandit leader was surrounded. Elliot stood in front of him, sword raised and breathing hard.

To his left was Evelyn, whose sword was bloody but ready. Diana was on her roof and had an arrow aimed at Kruger’s head.

And Helena was getting ready to cast what looked like a final, overpowered spell. Her hands were crackling with fire and lightning.

Kruger was injured badly. There was an arrow sticking out of his shoulder and one out of his thigh.

There were burns on one side of his face, and a deep sword cut had opened his side so much that Rex could see ribs. The man should have been on the ground, dead.

"That’s enough... you’re better than this." Elliot said, trying to change him. "I know that there’s still some good in you...!"

"My god... this fucking bitch." Rex could see from afar that Elliot was trying to make Kruger change into someone better. "A pussy like this should’ve died sooner with that fucking mindset."

Then... Kruger was laughing instead.

"Fuck all of your words down your throat...! I don’t have anything better inside me other than taking something that I want!"

"You think you’ve won just because of that...!? " Despite his pain, Kruger’s voice remained strong as he shouted. "You think I didn’t plan for any of this!?"

He took a small vial out of his belt. Rex could see liquid sloshing around inside the dark glass.

It was thick and red, almost black, and it looked like it was glowing from the inside.

"What the fuck is that...?"

"No, Kruger! Stop it now!!!" Elliot shouted, knowing it was dangerous even though he didn’t fully understand it. "That thing isn’t worth it!"

"Not worth it? Who are you to talk to me like that, you fucking asshole!" Kruger’s laugh turned insane. "This is...! This is what you called POWEEERRRRR!!!"

Rex’s Foresight was full of warnings, with timeline after timeline showing disaster. Kruger drank the vial in every branch.

And in every branch, what came next was death.

"Ah shit," Rex said, already getting his telekinetic power ready.

Kruger broke the vial against his teeth and drank it.

The effect was immediate and horrifying.

His body shook, and the muscles under his skin bulged and twisted. The wounds that had been bleeding freely suddenly stopped, and the flesh quickly began to knit together.

His eyes rolled back in his head, showing only whites. When they rolled forward again, they were completely black, like pools of oil.

"Everyone back!" Helena screamed. "Get away from him!"

But it was too late. Kruger’s body started to change and mutate.

His skin turned a deep red and felt like cracked stone. His muscles got so big that they ripped through his armor and clothes and became very ugly.

Horns grew out of his head and curled back like a ram’s. His fingers turned into claws, and each one ended in a talon that was as long as a knife blade.

"Holy shit... that looks interesting. " Rex gets more invested just by seeing his transformation from drinking the vial.

Kruger’s teeth had turned into fangs, and the sound that came out of his mouth was not human. It was a deep, loud roar that shook windows and scared crows off of roofs nearby.

"RAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

It took less than five seconds for the change to happen. Where Kruger had stood, there was now a demon.

It was a creature of pure violence, almost nine feet tall, and its body gave off heat like a forge.

"You’re all fucked now...!!!" Kruger said with a big terrifying smile.

Elliot tried to charge it anyway. "For the people and justice...!"

His Heroic Strike went off, and his sword glowed with golden light as he swung it at the demon’s body. The sword hit with a sound, like metal hitting metal, and the impact sent shockwaves through the square.

The demon didn’t even move.

It hit Elliot in the back of the head and sent him flying. He crashed through the wall of a nearby store and vanished in a cloud of dust and debris.

"Elliot!" Evelyn screamed and moved to fight.

She was very fast, faster than any human could ever be, thanks to her speed. She blurred as she circled the demon, making cuts at every exposed point she could find.

Her sword drew blood, dark ichor that hissed when it hit the ground, but the wounds healed almost as quickly as she made them.

The demon’s hand moved faster than it should have been able to, and it grabbed Evelyn by the leg. It picked her up off the ground and slammed her down hard enough to break the cobblestones.

"GAGGHH...!!!" She gasped, the wind leaving her lungs, and the demon raised its clawed hand to kill her.

But then... she was saved because Diana’s arrow hit it in the eye.

The demon screamed in pain and rage, dropping Evelyn and scratching its face. The arrow had gone deep, but Rex could see it being pushed back out by tissue that was growing back as he watched through his Foresight.

Helena cast the spell she had been working on. "Flame Lightning Storm!"

The attack from both sides was devastating. Lightning bolts fell from the sky, each one leaving a trail of fire as they hit the demon in a storm of elemental rage.

The demon was swallowed up, and its screams of pain were drowned out by the loud explosions.

The demon was still standing when the spell was over. Its skin was burned and smoking, and one arm was hanging at a strange angle, but it was getting better.

The burned skin was already peeling off, showing new skin underneath.

It grinned at Helena with too many teeth and black eyes. "You fucking bitch...!"

Then it ran at her.

Rex watched from the roof, his mind racing. The Starlight family was outmatched.

The demon was getting stronger faster than they could hurt it, and it was too strong for them to handle. He could see timelines in his Foresight where Helena died, Diana died, and everyone else died.

He should step in so that he could change things like he always does to gain their trust. His telekinesis could hold the demon back long enough for the others to regroup and maybe find a weak spot.

But if he did that, people would ask questions about how powerful he really was. His carefully crafted image would start to fall apart.

"Alright... seems like it gets difficult here because of that vial. I didn’t expect that at all."

Rex was about to make that choice. He observed the demon drawing nearer to Helena, observed her preparing for a final attempt to save herself, and observed the branching timelines approaching the brink of catastrophe.

And he grinned.

"Alright, fuck it!" He said to himself, "This will be interesting."

The demon’s clawed hand came down toward Helena’s head.
