The Red Dragon Just Wants To Do As It Pleases-Chapter 46 - 45: Dragon’s Wrath
Chapter 46: Chapter 45: Dragon’s Wrath
In David’s view, since it was given by the Dragon Mother and was in the form of a ’ring’, it was unlikely to be disposable.
Besides, the darn thing didn’t even come with a manual. If he waited until he was in the thick of battle to try and use it haphazardly, he wouldn’t even know how to cry if it backfired on him.
It’s not like he could take the equipment back to the Dragon Mother and ask for a refund for damages, could he?
Knowing the Dragon Mother’s temper, he guessed she’d probably blast him into the bottom of the Arctic Ocean with a single Dragon Breath.
Hmm, might as well give it a try.
It’s just that the name sounded a bit too imposing.
Wrath of Tiamat, indeed.
Was there also a Love of Bahamut?
Probably only the Chromatic Dragons dared to so brazenly misuse the names of their Dragon Gods.
While internally scoffing, David promptly proceeded as per the dragon legacy’s usual method for using magical artifacts. He channeled his Magic Power towards the Wrath of Tiamat and finally adopted a casting pose he had just made up:
He hovered above his temporary lair, tilting his head slightly upward, and clenched his dragon claw in a flamboyant pose, as if he reigned supreme over the world.
At that instant, all the sounds in the world seemed to freeze.
David looked up in astonishment. In that instant, his gaze seemed to pierce through the thick clouds and the volcanic ash swirling in the troposphere, through the barrier between planes. He saw the silhouette of an imposing fortress standing on a plain of hell, and rune-covered stone pillars stabbing towards the sky, spreading endless unholy light.
Then, a flame burst forth from deep within the fortress like a volcanic eruption, shooting up into the sky.
But before he could see more, his vision was yanked back to reality. The previously gloomy and overcast sky was now turning a vivid red at a rate visible to the naked eye.
A towering pillar of Destruction Flame vaporized the clouds, creating a terrifying hole, and struck directly onto David’s dragon claw, onto the ’ring’ on his wrist.
For a moment, it was as if the sun had fallen to earth; the entire world was engulfed in scorching light, as bright as day.
The animals grazing on lichen and hunting for food in the nearby forest instinctively looked up. However, they were unable to gaze directly at the blinding light; their bodies instantly felt scorched, as if cast into a world-reforging crucible.
Then, a terrible shockwave, like landslides and earthquakes, radiated outward in all directions, centered on a completely bewildered David. The ground cracked and broke apart, shaking violently.
"Wait!"
Suddenly, David remembered something. He watched as his poor temporary lair rapidly crumbled under this ’way over-the-top version of the Ring of Fire Resistance’.
But the various pieces of loot gathered from the Elven warships, which should have melted instantly under the Destruction Flame, all rose into the air as if enveloped by an invisible fire, directly dissipating into the void.
"NO!!!"
Seeing his entire fortune once again reduced to nothing before his very eyes, David nearly choked on the spot.
But it wasn’t over. Next, he saw the clay-like ’ring’ on his wrist begin to crack, and soon, a lava-like draconic inscription appeared:
[Sacrifice treasures, and it is as if I am present. Recite my name, and enjoy eternal peace.]
CRACK.
The vessel for the Wrath of Tiamat disintegrated, but the draconic inscription that formed its core seemed to brand itself directly onto the Dragon Scales of David’s wrist.
[Lust]
A tremendous power unlike any before surged from every corner of his body.
The gaps between all of his scales emitted a dazzling, scorching red light, as though:
A Dragon God had descended!
It was as if a voice was whispering seductively in his ear:
"You have been empowered. Now, go make an offering of yourself!"
Yet David, supposedly ’temporarily empowered’, felt as if his body had been hollowed out.
He just hovered above the forest, watching as countless ancient trees that had stood for hundreds or thousands of years snapped like autumn grass, reduced to ash in an instant.
All creatures and tree roots, now mere charred skeletons, were relentlessly pushed into the distance. It was as if the entire material plane trembled and quaked under this heaven-scorching fury.
As time passed, the blazing light gradually faded, replaced by an eerie silence.
A long-missed ray of sunlight unexpectedly shone through the hole evaporated into the sky dome, casting its light upon David.
But the once vibrant wilderness forest had now become scorched earth.
Below David’s feet lay a circular crater, fully two kilometers in diameter, as if it were:
The ultimate divine retribution,
The scene of the incident.
In that instant, David felt as if he saw, beyond the horizon, a chibi version of the five-headed Chromatic Dragon Queen Tiamat. She blinked at him, rubbing her little claws together as if to say:
"What a generous spender! Thank you for your patronage, and please come again!"
"..."
After a while, gazing at the completely demolished temporary lair, David, on the verge of tears but unable to cry, let out a skyward howl.
"My money, money, money, money, AHHHH!!!!!"
[Wrath] *998
He had finally figured it out...
This was a conspiracy! His own Dragon Mother, in cahoots with the Chromatic Dragon Queen Tiamat, had robbed him—a poor Red Dragon who had just made a little bit of money!
Yet, he had no choice but to endure this silently, as if swallowing his own shattered teeth.
One was his legendary Dragon Mother, on whose territory he was still trying to eke out a living.
The other was the Dragon God of the Chromatic Dragons, their formidable queen, whose name he might one day have to invoke just to save his own skin.
He couldn’t afford to provoke either of them right now!
He could only chalk it up to paying rent and protection fees.
And why wasn’t this some kind of purchase on an installment plan?
David listlessly raised his clawed wrist. Looking at the draconic inscription now permanently etched onto his scales—personally penned by the Chromatic Dragon Queen Tiamat herself—he felt a surge of uncontrollable anger.
Having ’paid to win’ himself into bankruptcy, David now certainly understood the rules for using this Wrath of Tiamat:
It meant that he, as the ’user,’ would offer treasure (including any collectible loot within the strike’s range) to the great Scales of Evil, Tiamat.
An avatar of Tiamat would then personally intervene, using the ’bearer,’ David, as a targeting beacon to execute an interplanar, beyond-visual-range strike.
Of course, the intensity of the strike depended on the total value of the wealth David carried and the loot that could be collected at the strike point.
In short, the more ’payment’ offered, the greater the power.
If David could somehow sacrifice the wealth of an entire plane to Tiamat, that money-obsessed Dragon God might actually stoop to something as absurd as sending an avatar to personally help a follower settle a score...
"But going bankrupt after a single use, with all the loot swept clean too? Who the hell can withstand that!"
Unsure whether his shameless Dragon God could directly deduct ’fees’ from his treasure hoard via this inscription, David took a deep breath. He decided to seal away this ’Mutual Destruction—Luxury Edition of Mage Duncan’s Grand Disintegration Spell’.
Unless it was a last resort, a desperate need to perish alongside the enemy, no dragon could endure such an ordeal.
At the same time, he made a black mark in his mental ledger against Dragon Mother Pafila and Dragon God Tiamat.
When the day comes that I can defy the heavens, I’ll definitely get this ’account receivable’ back from them!
Damn it! Why are they always picking on *him* to fleece?!
He’s just a baby dragon, only five years out of his shell!
Just as David, impoverished overnight for the second time, was mentally settling these scores, he noticed an Elven warship, bearing signs of patch-up repairs, approaching from across the sea. He immediately let out a long sigh of relief.
He could only hope this trip with Hiatt would allow him to recover at least some of his losses.
