Chapter 47: Shadow Figure

Tara’s POV

As I waited at the eatery for Derek, my mind was still racing. I trust that Richard would be safe with Arlo, I just didn’t understand why I was so sad. I hoped Arlo would just change his mind and ask for my help.

Something in me began to realize that I hated waiting. I didn’t like what it does for me, how it made my stomach churned, or my heart beating, or why it’s making me have these crazy depressing thoughts in my head!

I was getting impatient that I brought out my phone with the attempt of dialing Derek’s number, only for me to see that he has walked in. Something seemed off about him. So wrong...

Derek was always so carelessly dressed, but today, his outfit looked so extra, and I was able to tell something was off because he and I used to fight all the time when I beg him to change his outfit on occasions where I always felt he was underdressed. So for him dressing so extra with his dark suit and shades with an expensive looking Italian shoes was a clear sign he was undergoing some sort of depression. Derek never even dressed so neat like this to work.

I almost asked him what happened the moment he came to sit down next to me.

"Why have you been staring at me like this? What, you’re no longer my wife to complain about me being underdressed, okay?" He said looking so serious that I was forced to laugh. "What? I need to remind you again, Tara. I am now a free man."

"Okay, stop it now, I get it." I couldn’t hold my laughter. It felt so good to laugh like this again.

"I’ve missed you, Tara. In my life. Especially with how stressful things have been now."

Hearing those words from him brought an instant frown on my face. "So this is what I get by being so familiar with you, huh?"

"It was just a little joke. Besides, everything I’ve just said is the real truth."

I felt like I was supposed to believe his words, but they hurt as hell. I remembered everything just like it has been yesterday. How he chose Melissa over me. He and his family... They abandoned me!

How was this man the father of my child? The father Richard had been anticipating about all this while?

"I believe I’ve made a huge mistake thinking I can have a sensible conversation with you, I guess you’re going through a lot you forgot how to be smart."

The Derek I knew would have gotten mad and angry but he just remains calm, which was surprising to me." is it because of that guy? The other guy who’s supposed to replace me in your life?"

I had not been expecting those words. "What’s this? Are you drunk now?"

"So it is because of him. I hope he isn’t threatening you or forcing you to do what you don’t like. No matter how angry I am towards this guy for taking over my spot in your life, it doesn’t matter. I’ll still--"

"I called you here because I needed to tell you something important. You’ll be hearing the details when next we see." I didn’t like the way I was feeling so I tried to harden my voice. His words were having these soft effects on me that I didn’t like. So who cares if he missed me? I didn’t miss him!

"Why can’t you tell me now?" he asked. I didn’t really have the answer to that. I guess I wasn’t ready yet.

"Prepare yourself, we’ll see soon. At the Hernandez party this weekend." I said before getting up. He didn’t hesitate to stop me so I had already walked a few steps before turning to add. "Oh, you’re expected to come with your wife and daughter." I didn’t wait to get his reaction before walking out of the room.

On my way to the car, I got a phone call from one of my assistants telling me Richard would be dropped at home. That meant I wouldn’t be seeing Arlo again until maybe at the party. I heaved in a deep sigh and went on my way.

"Where to, ma’am?" the driver on shift asked.

"Home, Lucas. Home." I said to him, then in my mind I was grinding childishly at how dramatic that had sounded, like one of those rom comedies series I used to watch. Then shortly after, Derek’s words began to play in my head again. How dare him claim that he missed me now? After all these years, he missed me now?

This was just something stupid I was letting to get to me. For all I cared, he was probably lying to me for some reason. I hated how these words were getting to me! "No, I don’t love him anymore!"

"Sorry, did you say something ma’am?" I heard the driver’s voice, making me realize I had just screamed out loud.

I flinched, my face flustering with embarrassment. "It’s nothing." I said to him and was glad he ignored and went on with his business.

No, I don’t love him anymore...

Third POV.

She kept on staring at the same image for over ten minutes now. His face was slightly rougher than she last remembered but there, all his handsomeness was still there. His cute dimples that crinkled whenever he smiled sometimes even when he talked.

Then those eyes that always made her melt right on spot... Arlo was everything to her.

"I don’t know anything about him these past days. Does he knows I’m back?" the slender petite lady asked one of the tall hard faced ladies on suit surrounding her.

"I highly doubt that ma’am. Unless someone has been caught when spying on him."

The lady frowned. "I wasn’t spying on him! You make it seem like such a shady thing. I’ve just missed him, that’s all. It’s nothing to worry about."

"O-Of course ma’am. That’s exactly what I meant."

"Where is he now? We’ve been waiting for hours!" just as the lady her said, a figure walked in with at least ten men storming behind him. The lady’s smile brightened as she hurried forward to meet the man.
