Chapter 239: So Far Gone

The news of Sidney’s plan to do an interview before her testimony reached the prosecutor’s office. They knew this is not a good idea and they tried to convince Sidney not to give the interview so close to her testimony. πŸπ—ΏπžπšŽπš πžπš‹π•Ÿπ¨πšŸπžπ•.π•”π• πš–

There is always a danger of her saying something contradictory to her initial statement or her testimony. Being on television "Live" is an anxiety-inducing task. She might slip up and mix up things and that could be used as evidence by the defense lawyers during the trial.

And the defense lawyers will question Sidney’s motive in giving interviews. She does come off as someone who likes the limelight as a victim of abuse. The jurors might perceive her as a narcissist who is in an avenge mode rather than as someone pitiful.

The defense team will use that as an excuse to remove Sidney from testifying.

But Sidney was not listening to any of that. She was so sure that she is going to be fine. Even when they threatened to remove her from the witness stand, she refused to give up the interview stating that she was not going to get another chance like this. She thought this interview would be a test run.

Matt, the prosecutor who talked to Rory previously came to visit her again. When he talked about how dumb and unhinged Sidney conducted herself, he didn’t think that she would be allowed to testify.

He told Rory that enduring trauma and abuse for a long time has altered Sidney a lot. She might be deemed unsuitable to testify.

Of course, Rory knew trauma can do a lot to the brain, but Sidney is a smart person. Surely, she wouldn’t have let her trauma affect her to that extent. She really thought Matt was exaggerating because he wanted her testimony.

She wanted to talk to Sidney first. but she knew arranging a meeting with Sidney won’t be perceived as normal considering that the prosecution is planning on dropping Sidney as the main witness.

She talked to Liam about it, and he said he’d asked someone to find out what happened between Lennon and Sidney during their meeting. The guard who was nearby told that Lennon was manipulative, and Sidney was falling for it.

"So, it is nothing new," Rory sighed.

"You were brought up a lot of times. So, it would be better if you stay away from Sidney," Liam said.

"Yeah, Ellie... the rug does not taste good..." Rory walked to her daughter who found this new habit of eating everything her eyes see.

Picking her up, she returned to the couch. "I still think I should try once more," Rory said. She had a feeling Liam had a soft spot for Sidney. She too felt bad for Sidney.

Lennon did hit her in the head a lot. She might have had her brain altered because of the trauma. But it doesn’t hurt to try. She too went through a trauma and almost lost her mind. Thankfully, her husband stayed with her and helped her overcome the trauma.

Sidney needs help too.

Liam agreed with her, but he said he will arrange for her security. Rory agreed. She will not deny any help her husband offers in her pursuits. Why should she forcefully make her life harder when she can do everything easily with her husband’s help?

He’s her husband and it is kind of his job description to make her life easier.

It was not hard to get Sidney to come to her. All Rory had to do was to shop in the same shop Sidney was shopping for her dress and make sure Sidney sees her.

Rory did not understand why this brand was overrated when she didn’t like any of the styles there. Sidney came rushing to Rory’s side with loud clicking of her heels. Rory pretended to be surprised to see Sidney.

"Are you following me?" Sidney asked. With her finger pointed at Rory, she was confrontational.

"Whoa, Sidney... I could say the same. I am actively trying to avoid you and yet... here you are..." Rory sighed.

"You are one nasty b*tch, Rory. Must you ruin my peace every time? I was having a good time until a minute ago and you have to be here!" Sidney gritted her teeth.

"But I didn’t even know you were here. You could have ignored me or left the store. Then we could~"

"Why should I leave? Why is it I who needs to accommodate you? You are a pretentious piece of shit! You say you don’t want attention yet that is exactly what you need!" Sidney almost grabbed her blouse.

Rory took a step back, signaling her bodyguards to stay back.

"You’re the one trying to get the attention of everyone, Sidney. Look around," Rory whispered.

The store workers were all staring at them and some of them had already pulled their phones out.

"Shall we talk somewhere private in a civil manner if you want to talk?" Rory asked.

"No," Sidney scoffed. "What do I have to say to you? You had no reason to be in the court that day and yet you... You relish his attention on you. Isn’t that why you were there?"

"Whose attention?" Rory asked. "I was there to support my husband."

"Your husband?" Sidney shook her head in disbelief. "You were there for my husband. You saw how his entire demeanor changed after he saw you there. It was not enough for you to monopolize his attention when we were married and even now, you’re not..."

Rory let out a deep sigh and turned to leave.

Sidney is far gone!

She didn’t want to engage with her any further.

"Wait... Where are you going?" Sidney tried to follow Rory, but the bodyguards blocked her.

Rory reached home.

"How could she still call him her husband?" she asked leaning on Liam’s shoulder.

Liam gently rubbed her back. He knew this is not a question she needed an answer for. She just needed to vent. And so, he will lend his shoulder for her to vent as much as she wants to.

"She’s so far gone. Mental and physical trauma had made her so attached to him. Kind of like Stockholm syndrome... She needs help, Liam. She cannot function in society like that..."

Rory said that out of love. Sidney truly needs help.

"I’ll talk to people," Liam said.

Rory nodded.

"And I don’t have a choice, do I, Fizzy? I should testify, right? Otherwise, that guy... I need him to suffer for what I endured all my life..." she said.

Liam hugged her close. "You still have a choice, Cherry. You don’t have to if you don’t want to." He rubbed her back.

"Why are you so... perfect?" Rory took in his scent. He’s been making her heart skip a beat like no one’s business these days.

"You’ll be there for me, right, Fizzy?" She looked at him.

Liam nodded brushing the hair that was sticking to her cheeks.

"Then I will sit on that witness stand," she said. "I want to."
