Too Late to Love Her: When She Divorced, He Fell Apart-Chapter 59: President Hale’s Popularity Is at Its Peak
Claire never would have imagined that the golden bachelor Joy was introducing would turn out to be Jenson Jennings.
Moreover, he had come with Tristan Lockwood.
She gave a strained smile and slightly nodded to Jenson as a greeting.
As for Tristan, who had a frosty expression next to him, Claire chose to ignore him.
But the next second, her expression turned cold.
Jade Sutton emerged from behind Tristan Lockwood.
She cautiously smiled at Claire.
But facing Claire’s icy stare, she fearfully hid in Tristan’s embrace.
It made Claire seem like a malicious and unreasonable woman.
After everyone sat down, the atmosphere became subtly awkward.
Joy, unaware of their relationship, thought her boss was shy and tried to lighten the mood.
Just as she raised her glass, Jude Jacobs snatched it away.
He replaced it with a glass of juice from the table and handed it to her.
"You’re still young, you shouldn’t drink alcohol."
Jude said calmly.
Joy widened her eyes, "Jude, I’m already twenty-two! Even my X-life is free, what’s wrong with drinking!"
Jude furrowed his brows and scolded, "What nonsense are you talking about?"
Joy pouted, holding back words.
Tina Hayes, witnessing this, leaned over to Claire and said, "I get the feeling that Joy’s ’god’ is actually quite into her."
Claire glanced at them, they did seem like quite the pair.
"Claire, can I have a drink with you?"
Jade Sutton, at some point, had walked up with a wine glass.
Claire looked up, "Weren’t you in the hospital during the day? Can you drink?"
"I’ll substitute it with juice."
Seeing her composed response, Jade curved her lips in a smile.
"We haven’t seen each other in so many years, this reunion is the first chance to sit down and have a drink together."
"Indeed, it’s quite rare." Claire nodded, "After all, you used to hide mysteriously behind Tristan Lockwood. Why the sudden change, willing to come out now?"
Jade’s expression faltered, and she dejectedly lowered her glass.
"Why make things difficult for her?"
Tristan reproachfully looked at Claire.
Claire blinked, "How am I making things difficult?"
He sneered, "You know exactly what you’re doing."
She chuckled, "I’m not sure what you’re hinting at. But all I know is some people have peculiar tastes, like putting a green hat on others and forbidding them from taking it off."
Everyone present knew what she meant.
Tristan naturally realized she was mocking him.
He was about to erupt when Jade interjected, holding his hand to mediate, "Some things, Claire might not fully understand, leading to misunderstandings. We can explain to her."
The "we" made her seem like an outsider.
Jenson then suggested, "Claire, sitting here is quite boring, how about we go for a dance?"
Claire readily agreed.
Immediately, she took off her coat.
Joy gasped softly beside, whispering to Tina Hayes, "President Hale’s figure is truly amazing, just right and still so slender!"
Tina, feeling proud as if it was her being praised, deliberately said loudly, "Isn’t it? President Hale is quite the catch; you wouldn’t believe how many flowers are sent to the law firm every day, enough to circle Riverbend!"
Joy was taken aback, thinking what nonsense Tina was saying, wasn’t President Hale a widow king?
Just then, she noticed the oppressive atmosphere across them getting colder.
The one-billion-dollar face was looking increasingly displeased.
Claire wasn’t very good at dancing.
In the dance floor, she just swayed slightly with the music.
Her mood was still foul.
Mainly because Tristan Lockwood had really aggravated her.
Previously, he’d still be wary of Jade being found by Sean Lockwood and would hide her away.
But now it was different.
That bizarre brother-in-law doesn’t catch adulterers, leaving it up to her, the niece-in-law, to solve everything.
Tristan Lockwood was utterly unscrupulous.
"Claire?"
Hearing Jenson call her, Claire snapped back, turning her head to find him very close.
Their breaths mingled together.
She paused slightly, suddenly brazen, wrapped her arms around Jenson’s waist and said, "Jenson, can you take me in?"
Jenson laughed, "I’m afraid someone won’t agree."
Claire felt like sighing again.
"But he won’t agree to a divorce and still wants to keep a mistress, wouldn’t you say he must have a mental illness, having to put a green hat on someone to live peacefully."
Jenson suddenly stopped, pulling her to a quiet corner, "Your hostility towards Jade is quite apparent, tell me, is it just because you think Tristan is particularly protective of her?"
Claire pressed her lips tightly, silent.
Jenson looked at her earnestly, "Claire, I’ve known you for many years. I understand your nature. I know, because of your childhood experiences, you’re not good at expressing goodwill and affection, so when you face someone you like, and they show a hint of indifference, you subconsciously activate a defense mechanism, pretending to be colder than them to avoid getting hurt."
"That’s especially evident when you deal with Tristan." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Claire felt a pang in her chest, "What are you trying to say?"
Jenson: "Is your hostility towards Jade really just because of Tristan?"
Claire didn’t respond.
A scene from childhood flashed through her mind, being locked in a boys’ bathroom and Jade bravely coming to get her out.
But she quickly pushed the thought away.
To Jenson, she forced a smile, "Has anyone told you that reading others is annoying?"
Jenson’s eyes flickered, seemingly deep in thought.
Then he released her wrist.
Claire returned alone to the dance floor.
She mindlessly swayed, soon approached by several individuals.
But none of them matched Tristan’s handsomeness.
Claire couldn’t muster any enthusiasm.
"Miss, care for a dance?"
A lively male voice sounded above her.
She was about to instinctively refuse when she looked up and paused.
This guy was quite appealing.
Seemed young, like a college student.
Born right onto her aesthetic point.
"Can I?"
The handsome guy looked earnest.
This time, Claire reacted faster than she thought.
Looking into those deep, bright eyes, she nodded without thinking.
The guy beamed, reaching to hold her waist, but Claire’s arm was suddenly pulled back.
Tristan held her arm firmly, glaring at the young man.
The young man didn’t seem upset, just asked Claire concernedly, "Miss, he looks very fierce, do you really know him?"
"Selling yourself, why talk so much?"
Tristan retorted coldly.
The young man’s face changed slightly, giving a forced smile.
Tristan briskly pulled Claire out of the bar.
"Now you’ll entertain anyone? Even letting a gigolo take you?"
