Chapter 311: A ray of light

"I have to speak to him somehow," Rylan said urgently the moment he returned to the Pendragon palace. "He has to know this."

"But he won’t let you in. He has been quiet in that chamber for four months now. We no longer hear his cries or sounds of things being scattered. I am worried he’s done something to himself," Zane said as they all gathered in the dining hall to talk about how to get to Lucian.

They all knew Lucian couldn’t die of dehydration or starvation as he wasn’t human, however it was still detrimental to his health to remain locked away for so long.

"What did you find out?" Alden asked curiously, as Rylan had been gone for months now and only returned this morning with an urgent air around him. He looked to be in a terrible state with dark circles around his eyes like someone who had not slept for days, his hair tangled and a curly mess on his head.

"A lot. She didn’t die because she saved us. I have to talk to His Majesty first about it. He can still bring her back, only he can do it," Rylan announced, and everyone’s eyes widened in excitement at his words.

"We can bring her back?" Alden asked in wonder, his eyes widening. "How?"

"It’s not going to be easy," Rylan sighed. "From what I’ve learned, only His Majesty can do it. It might not work, but trying is better than doing nothing."

"Then we should tell him!" Thalia said, rising to her feet, barely able to contain her excitement. However, she swayed slightly, and Zane was quick to steady her by wrapping an arm around her waist. No one noticed, too preoccupied with figuring out how to break the news to Lucian.

Zane leaned down to speak in her ear, "You should be careful, you could hurt yourself or our child." He subtly traced her belly, but she swatted away his hand and glared at him. "Don’t make it obvious, we can’t let anyone know yet when brother Lucian is still in such a condition and... and my best friend is no longer here."

"I’ll try to talk to him through the door," Rylan said as he stood up from his chair and walked out of the hall with the family members following closely behind him.

When they reached the door, Rylan knocked on it and began to coax Lucian to open it. "There is something you need to hear about my sister."

However, no matter what he said, there was no movement from within the room, nor were there any signs that the person behind the door was even listening to them.

Rylan turned to look at the crowd behind him with a worried frown. "Something is not right. We need to break open the door."

"We’ve tried to break it the first month he locked it, but it was useless," Alden remarked. Lucian had sealed it with his magic.

Rylan massaged his aching temple and raked his hand through his hair. "Step back. I will try to unseal it," he grumbled to the royals crowding around him. When they moved back, he stared hard at the door and muttered spells under his breath. It took him hours of trying to finally find the right spell Lucian had used to seal the door. He couldn’t believe he’d used a death seal to close himself in!

When the door opened, they were greeted by the dark and cold chamber where they could not see anything beyond the pitch darkness.

Seraphina and her daughters stumbled their way to find the windows and pulled apart the tightly sealed thick curtains. Natural daylight immediately flooded the room, giving them all their first view of the ruins and the man lying amidst it.

A gasp escaped their lips when they found Lucian lying face-up on the bare floor. His eyes were closed, and his lashes rested peacefully against his cheeks, which had sunken and shaped his face. He’d lost weight and looked no different from a dead man. He didn’t move, and if it weren’t for the small rise and fall of his chest, they would have thought he was dead.

He was still wearing his tattered royal robe, which he’d worn on that day, and the blood had long dried on them. His lips were deadly pale, just as his face.

Alden crouched down and nudged him gently on the shoulder. "Lucian?"

There was no reply nor movement. He didn’t even stir from his sleep. They tried everything to wake him, but to no avail.

Rylan finally realized something was terribly wrong. He muttered a spell, and immediately they saw a transparent, rippling white light appear around his body that knocked them a few feet away from him and shone brightly until it was blinding.

"Damnation," Rylan gritted through clenched teeth as he stared at Lucian in disbelief. "He cast an illusion spell around himself."

"What does that mean?" Zane asked.

"He is alive but as good as dead because he has trapped his mind and soul in a world he created in his head. No doubt he’s living the life he wanted in his head to block away the pain of reality and everything."

"Can’t you break the spell?" Alden hissed in annoyance as he hated the condition his brother was in. He didn’t look like himself anymore as he lay there. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

"I can’t. Only he can do that. When one casts such an illusion, they live in it until they die in it or perish away from the real world," Rylan murmured in despair as he realized the only means to bring back his sister was also as good as dead.

"What do you mean he will perish? Is there no other way we can wake him and let him know about what you found out?" cried Lady Seraphina as she clutched her daughter and stared down at Lucian and the rippling lights around his body that kept glowing brighter.

"He’s gone deeper into the illusion; he can’t hear us. Not unless we break into it and get to his conscious mind somehow," Rylan told them.

"How are we going to do that?" Orion questioned quietly.

"We can get to his conscious mind by telling him why he shouldn’t remain in his mind and why he should be awake. It’s not going to be an easy feat. Everyone sit around him and hold your hands."

Everyone got into position and sat around him on the floor, holding each other’s hands. They then looked toward Rylan for instructions on what to do next.

"We start chanting his name and repeating to him that he is living a life of a lie and needs to wake up to bring back his real wife and not the one he made up in his mind. Can you all do that? We might be here for hours, if not days, depending on how deep he has gone."

"We will do anything to make things right again in our family. We want brother Lucian and his wife back," Isolde said with a sob as she clenched her hand around her sister’s.

Everyone nodded their heads in agreement. "I wouldn’t have been here had it not been for her," Alden said. "And I want my brother back as well."

Rylan smiled faintly as he looked around at the determined Pendragon family. "Then let’s do this." He clenched his own fingers around Celeste and held on to her tight. The way he held her was different from how he held Orion, who was on his other hand. And Celeste turned to look at him with tears in her eyes as she knew he wanted to take strength from her even though he didn’t say it. He had been through a lot in the past few months that she wished he would just lay his head down on her lap and rest.

But everything would be over soon, she assured herself. They would all make things right.

They began to chant after what Rylan said to them.
