Chapter 312: Living a lie

Lucian could not believe his life could ever get this wonderful again after everything he’d gone through. He’d lived twenty years with his wife now, and every day of it was as beautiful as he could ever have asked for. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

Ave had cooked him one of her modern dishes and was now feeding him as she sat on his lap. She leaned down and licked away the soup that she intentionally spilled on his chin, then she moved up and licked his lips before she kissed him slowly and then deeply.

They were still kissing when he thought he heard someone calling his name. He jolted away from the kiss, startling his wife.

"What’s wrong, honey?" She whispered softly as she smiled at him sweetly. She had never had any expression on her face but that smile he loved to see since the day she’d come back to him.

Lucian slowly shook his head. "Nothing. I thought I heard something, but it’s nothing."

"Hmm. Will you ride with me to that pond we once went to that has roses and a swing?" She asked as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

He could never say no to her. Not in this lifetime again. He had lost her once and would not dare lose her again. He would give her whatever she asked of him.

Lucian nodded his head and gathered her in his arms as he stood up to his feet. She giggled as he swung her around in his arms. She had been pregnant for all the years they’d been together, but he didn’t mind that she wasn’t giving birth yet because he didn’t want to have any fear of losing her to childbirth ever again.

Lucian was about to help her into a carriage he had specially crafted for her himself when the voice came into his head again and made him freeze.

’Wake up, Lucian. She’s not real. Nothing is real, you are living a life of a lie.’

"My love, what’s wrong?" His wife asked him worriedly when she saw the look of shock on his face. She cupped his cheeks in her hands and made him look down at her. She had tears in her eyes now when she had never cried before.

Lucian snapped back to his senses and shook the voices out of his mind. How dare such a voice make his wife cry?

He crushed her into his embrace and hugged her to his chest. "Shh. It’s nothing, don’t cry. Don’t cry."

"Lucian, are you going to leave me?" She sobbed in his arms, and he shook his head quickly.

"Never. I will never leave you!" He vowed firmly.

’She is not real. Your life is a lie. Wake up, Lucian. Your wife needs you. Everyone needs you. You are living a lie! Aveline needs you!’

Lucian began to shake the voice away as it made his wife cry more. She clutched to him when he began to listen to the voice. Her cries broke his heart, and he yelled.

"My wife is here. Get out of my head!" He clutched her tightly, and she held onto him.

"Lucian, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me. I can’t live without you!"

’Lucian, Aveline needs you back. You have to wake up.’

Aveline needs him? But she is here now. How could she need him when they were already together for twenty years now? His world was perfect. How could it be a lie?

Aveline needs him...

Lucian began to move away from his wife to follow the voice when she cupped his face and brought his face down as she shook her head. "I can’t live without you, Lucian... I’m scared, don’t leave me. I’ll die without you!"

"I..."

’Wake up, Lucian!’ The voice in his head got louder. He couldn’t ignore it anymore. He looked down at his crying wife as she shook her head for him to ignore the voices. He wanted to ignore it, but he couldn’t. It made him remember things he wanted to forget. The death of his wife and how miserable he was.

He was torn between which one to listen to: his wife in front of him or the voices telling him he needed to wake up because she needed him. Wake up from what? His perfect life?

"Don’t leave me... please... don’t!" She clutched his front shirt as he began to feel himself giving in to the voice.

Lucian looked down at his perfect wife and realized something was utterly wrong. Her vocabulary barely extended beyond telling him how much she loved him or how she couldn’t live without him. She repeated the same words and phrases so often that he found himself longing for the life he once had with her before this.

’She’s not real. She lives only in your head...’

A tear rolled down his eyes as he felt his throat burn with unnamed emotions. His throat clenched until he bit down painfully on his lower lip. He cupped her cheeks as she kept shaking her head for him not to go.

"I am sorry. I have to leave to find you again." He whispered brokenly as he caressed her cheeks. "I will make it up to you. I love you so much... goodbye, my heart." He leaned down and kissed her hard as the world began to swirl around him and everything around them began to fall apart.

"Goodbye..."

Rylan and the rest had spent the whole day and night repeating the same words, and many had begun to grow tired, but they never gave up. It was the dawn of the next day, but there had been no changes in Lucian until now. The lights around him began to dim slowly until they died down completely, and they were finally able to see his face, where tears clung to his thick lashes.

Slowly, his eyelids lifted, revealing the deep gold of his eyes.

"We did it! He’s awake!" Seraphina sobbed. Everyone sighed in relief when they noticed his eyes were opened, but the moment he turned the sharp eyes to them, they froze. His dark glare pinned them down one by one.

"I hope you awakened me for a good reason or I will make sure you all suffer with me in this damned world." Came his hoarse, emotionless voice that sent shivers down their spines.
