Chapter 313: A way to bring her back

Everyone gathered around Lucian, though they made sure to stand away from him as he gave off a dark energy that made the room feel small and suffocating. He had been awake for some time now, and he glared darkly at Alden and Rylan. If looks could kill, they would have fallen to their deaths by now.

"I won’t repeat myself again. What did you find out about my wife?" Lucian grumbled in annoyance as he pinned them down with his dark stare. How dare they awaken him only to keep him from what they wanted to tell him about his Aveline?

"And I won’t say it again, Lucian. If you want to hear what Rylan has to say, you will have to bathe and eat. Not until you look like a living man again will Rylan say a word," Alden remarked calmly as he met his brother’s stare without flinching or fidgeting like the women in the chamber, who had stood away from Lucian. He wanted, just like his brother, to hear how they could make things right again. However, Alden knew that the moment Rylan told them what he had discovered, Lucian would not bother to look after himself and would go on to prepare for whatever Rylan said.

He was only worried for his health. He looked in terrible shape. He had been able to stand straight when he woke up, but he staggered on his feet until he fell back down to the floor.

Lucian wanted to tell them to their faces that it was none of their damn business if he refused to eat or take care of himself. They had woken him up when he had finally found peace, and they owed it to him to tell him why.

However, looking at the stubborn angles of Alden’s face and the determined looks on Rylan and Zane’s faces as they stood over him like they would force him into eating and bathing if he still refused, he knew he was wasting precious time resisting.

It was best he did what they wanted of him quickly and got on with the main business. They had told him Rylan had learned something that would help him get back his wife, but they would only tell him if he looked human again. Muttering a curse, Lucian pushed himself up and staggered to the bathing room, where the maids had fixed his bath on Alden’s command.

He couldn’t waste precious time—time he was supposed to use to get back his wife—fighting his family for trying to take care of him when he didn’t need their care. The only care and love he wanted was from his wife.

Lucian bathed and freshened up within minutes, then made his way out in a robe, where a tray of different meals had been set down for him to eat. He had no appetite to stomach any of what they had prepared for him, but he didn’t argue when Alden gestured for him to sit.

Glaring darkly at his brother, he sat down and began to eat without chewing or tasting the food. They kept on refilling his plate until he could no longer stomach anything else and gagged. He raised his hand to Lady Seraphina, who kept adding more for him, and she immediately stopped as she realized he had eaten more than enough.

Rubbing his chest, Lucian looked up at Rylan from where he sat. "I’ve done everything you wanted me to. Now tell me what you found out," he said calmly, hoping whatever it was would indeed help him bring back his wife—or God help them all for what they had put him through since he had woken up.

Everyone turned to look at Rylan eagerly. Even though they had gone through the process of keeping Lucian in suspense, they were also in suspense, as Rylan had not told them exactly what he had found.

Clearing his throat, Rylan began to speak. "Aveline did not perish because she used her powers to save us all. Before the attack, it seemed she had made a deal with the Moon Goddess—more like she asked for a favor after she heard that Goddess Nyxara was about to punish and redo your curse. Only this time around, you would feel an intense pain that would kill you on the night of the next red moon."

Lucian stiffened at those words, his fingers slightly trembling as he asked, "What favor did she ask?"

"She wanted you to live without your curse or pain, to be free of the red moon pain completely, and in exchange, she would leave your life as punishment. She wanted Nyxara to never disturb you again. She said that since you love her dearly, you would feel the pain of her absence more than the pain of the Goddess killing you to avenge her daughter on the night of the next red moon. She gave herself in exchange for your life."

Lucian’s head slowly dropped into his hands as he felt his heart twist in his chest. His stomach churned, and he felt sick at the cruelty of it all. He had kneeled and asked for forgiveness, yet she never forgave him and took away the most important part of his life. It was no different from being killed. He would have rather preferred she let him suffer to his death every red moon night than live this life without Ave.

No wonder Ave had been acting strange ever since the night the Rosa overtook her. She had begun to do things that made him feel like she was saying goodbye in ways that made him uncomfortable.

She had bathed him and helped him into his clothes. She had wanted him to make love to her like it was their last—knowing it was indeed their last. He should have known something wasn’t right. He should have tried to press her to tell him what was wrong. If he’d known, he’d have at least done something to convince her to go back on whatever deals she’d made for his sake.

Angry with himself for not seeing through everything, Lucian flung away the tray of food on the bed and yanked at his hair savagely. "Why did she do this to me?! Why!!" he cried as he slid down to the side of the bed, his head hanging low in his hands. Ave had given herself to save his life—a life he didn’t want without her.

Not willing to let himself fall into despair again, Lucian got a hold of his emotions and looked up at Rylan. "What else did you find? Did she kill herself again and seal away her soul to never be reborn?" he asked with a bitter note in his voice. Rosette had done that before; he wouldn’t be surprised if she had done it again now. But Rylan shook his head, taking Lucian by surprise.

"She didn’t seal away her soul?" Lucian asked, hastily standing up from the floor.

Rylan nodded his head. "Yes. You two are connected in a way that goes beyond a mate mark. If she had died, your suffering would have been doubled. Among the favors she asked, she wanted to live—for you."

Lucian’s eyes widened. "My wife is not dead?"

"Yes."

Everyone in the room began to rejoice upon hearing that, and even Lucian smiled at the news. But Rylan’s next words wiped away the momentary happiness in everyone’s hearts.

"She lives in a different time and world. She is far beyond yours or anyone’s reach here."

Lucian’s heart sank into his stomach as he stared at Rylan with a dumbfounded expression. "She’s no longer in our time... does that mean she is... in the future?"

"I don’t know if it’s the future or the past. All I know is that she lives in a different time from you. But knowing that she has once lived in the future, I think she must have gone back there and not the past."

Lucian slowly sank back down to the floor in despair. He had thought everything would be fine, but it kept getting worse and worse. She was way beyond his reach...

Rylan continued to speak. "She made a deal with Nyxara that if she punished you this way, Nyxara would leave you be forever. So, Your Majesty, if we can find a way to bring her back to you, you will be free of the curse and whatever punishment."

Lucian stared up at his brother-in-law with pained amber eyes. "Is there a way to bring her back?"

"We might have a way..." Rylan trailed off, causing Lucian’s hopes to rise again. He got up to his feet. "What can we do? I will do anything to bring her back."

"Are you sure?" Rylan asked.

"Can’t you see that I am dead sure? I will do anything—anything it takes to get her back to me."

Rylan smiled faintly. "Then I think you are ready to transmigrate to the future to find her."

Lucian blinked twice, taken aback. "Transmigrate to the future? Can I do that?"

"Yes, I will perform the spell. However, there is something you must keep in mind—you won’t be there for long. You have to find her and make her want to return without you forcing her," Rylan told him.

"That is simple. Aveline will want to return if she sees me," Lucian said confidently. However, he saw the uncertain look in Rylan’s eyes and knew there was more he hadn’t been told.

"There is something you need to know," Rylan said gravely, and once he was told, Lucian paled instantly. However, he didn’t let it discourage him and determinedly spoke up again. "I will go. I am willing to do anything!"
