[Oblivion Awakes]

'Awakes?' Nick thought right before the earth itself began shaking. Instinctively raising his arms to provide himself more balance, he felt Elise grab one of those arms and almost drag him through the cellar.

"Come on! I- well, there's not much time to explain anything. The demons are coming! You... you just killed their army! I- I think you might be able to kill the demons themselves!"

Demons? Army?!

Didn't he just kill the necromancer and his goons?!

Unless...

Elise was the first to go through the door to the cemetery, but Nick wasn't far behind. The moment he stepped back into the light, he looked down at her chest area.

Not for any inappropriate reasons! It's just...

As he thought.

Her gem was empty. She should be dead unless she had forsaken herself.

"You're the necromancer?"

Elise stopped at this accusation but made no attempt to deny it. She merely nodded her head and continued walking out of the cemetery.

'She's pushing it off so nonchalantly?'

He was about to stop her, to force her to explain what was going on when an explosion rocked the entire sky.

Looking up, he saw that the clouds themselves had parted. The vibrant blue of the hidden sky was gone, shattered. Even the sun's light had melted into the darkness of the dimensional rift.

[Oblvion descends]

As if the system's message invited them, hundreds of thousands of demons started billowing out of this crack. From where Nick was, they looked like a bunch of flies.

He knew that being face-to-face with one would be an entirely different story. Additionally... the rift had opened right over the city.

'They're going to kill everyone...' Nick realized.

The rest of his party members, even if they were strong in their own rights, were nothing compared to demons. He didn't exactly know how he knew that, but he knew it to be an objective truth.

Gripping the Fang tightly in his hand, Nick knew what to do even before the system told him.

[New Quest: Defend the city]

[Reward: Key of Protection]

'This is the second key to the Path of Annihilation. Protection? Why would protecting something be related to destruction?'

The answer was quite simple.

Why was he here in the first place?

To kill Yck. Even if he hadn't done anything wrong yet.

Why? To defend his people. And he knew that he wouldn't just stop there. For power, the power to protect himself and the ones he loves, Nick would do any heinous task necessary.

That's why protection was a key to Annihilation. But even then...

'So be it. A reality that would threaten me and my loved ones doesn't deserve to exist.' Nick thought right before Elise turned to him with a small and solemn smile.

"I don't know what's going to happen. But... thank you. Maybe once these demons are gone... I can finally begin to atone for my sins."

'Sins?'

But before he could ask a question, she had already disappeared. Teleportation. Quite a useful skill, one he would like to earn.

For now though...

He gave one last glance to the Fang. It was time to do his objective from the start. With the power he would gain by releasing the first seal of Annihilation, Nick knew he'd be able to easily decimate these demons...

And whatever would come after.

...

Amelia gasped as the entire mansion shook.

Chandeliers chimed as they wildly shook against the ceiling, causing light to shine every which way. The windows buckled against some fierce pressure, more dominant than any she had ever felt before.

A rough echo came from the stairs leading to where she was, in the mansion's hall. A soft sigh of relief left Amelia's lips because she knew that at least that was a friendly beast.

Relatively, of course.

"Amelia, what the heck is going on!!!" Juliana called as she raced down the last few stairs.

Amelia shook her head, still too petrified to move from her spot. Maybe it was just Ugyr training. Right?

Bolting past Amelia, Juliana sprinted right through the door. Now that she knew she'd be accompanied by a friend, especially one as strong as Juliana, Amelia was emboldened enough to follow.

What they saw was enough to destroy both of their constitutions. The sky itself was cracking. Within this crack, an endless abyss was revealed. Within this endless abyss, they both knew that an endless army of demons rushed past one another, eager to be the first to taste human flesh.

And anyone living knew the dangers of demons. They were engraved into everyone since birth, ever since the city of Eilanderil fell. Ever since the countless nations within the Forgotten Quadrant disappeared.

Demons were a force of nature, an amalgamation of all the worst aspects of normal living creatures. They thrived off madness and despair and thus lived for war. If someone found themselves within the presence of a demon, the best thing was to take your sword and use it to pierce your heart.

Just killing and death wasn't satisfactory enough for these hell spawns. They needed to see suffering, to see the soul completely broken and incinerated. They needed tears, false hope, and crushing defeat.

Demons had to see everything you love and cherish gone, forgotten, destroyed.

Light could not exist within their shadow, happiness could not exist under their gaze. Escape was not survival—it merely subjected you to a far worse fate of madness.

There had been plenty of stories detailing exactly this. An entire battalion would meet a single demon squire. In the next instant, every soldier in that battalion would be brutally maimed. The only one left would go to the nearest town, shouting hysterically.

Then he would kill everyone he could before he died, claiming that he saved them from a far worse fate.

Every time Oblivion descended, only darkness followed. Every time Oblivion descended, only Annihilation followed.

That was the level of despair every living being who even heard tales of demons knew.

When Oblivion descended, it was guaranteed the End was near.
