Chapter 27: A Person From Long Ago

A few hours after Elena found Rudy asleep in the first ward, he groggily opened his eyes and looked at the familiar ceiling.

After some moments, he came to his mind and sat up.

’How long have I been sleeping?’ He asked himself and checked his haloband.

Much to his surprise, he had a message from Elena.

’When did she add me?’

[Best Master In All The Worlds: You are quite a dumb student, you know? You could have asked your benevolent master for one more day instead of running the whole night...

Anyway, I’ve sent you the location of the simulation ward. Once you wake up and are ready, come here.

P.S. — Do not come running immediately after waking up. Take a bath and eat something first.]

Once he finished reading the message, a disgusted expression appeared on his face, and only one thought filled his mind.

"What the hell is that nickname? ’Best Master In All The Worlds’ my ass!" He grumbled under his breath and stood up from his bed.

As he stepped down, a sting coursed upwards from his leg, and he groaned, "Ugh! Shit, it hurts."

He fell back in his bed and took a few quick breaths before he remarked inwardly, ’I have to move.’

He undressed himself, then forced himself off the bed and walked into the bathroom unit, gritting his teeth.

The mildly cold water slid down his pale body, and he thought with a lowered head, ’Each path provides the irregulars with a passive benefit, like those of the moon path can stay calm in any situation while using their essence... should I try moving my essence to my legs?’

He brushed his hair and looked into the mirror as he moved one fourth of the cupful of blood essence he had in his essence core to his legs.

A cold yet warm soothing sensation coursed with the essence, and the pain he had begun to decrease before it vanished entirely.

The corners of his lips curled, and he noted in his head, ’Heh. So blood essence has passive healing... isn’t that great.’

A few minutes later, he left the bath, put on his other set of uniform, had his usual portion of intake at the mess hall, and walked to the location that Elena had sent him.

Upon entering the simulation ward, his eyes fell on the white simulation pods and the divers lying within them.

All of them wore a black body suit that covered them from head to toe, with red dots that served as sensors, allowing them to control themselves within the simulation.

’Even the simulation suit is red and black... what’s wrong with this place?’ Rudy sighed inwardly and walked further inside.

As he reached an empty simulation pod, a familiar voice reached him.

"You are finally here."

’Not again.’ He turned around and looked at Elena, his face terrified, as he blabbered, "I-I a-am sorry..."

Seeing a man with such a body shivering before her, Elena let out an amused chuckle and said, "You must be glad that your master is benevolent enough to let it slide."

’Please stop saying that!’

"I am!" He responded with a cheery smile.

"Good, good," she nodded as she turned around and said after gesturing for him to follow, "Come with me."

Both of them walked out of the simulation ward and continued to a location that Rudy had no idea of.

He looked at Elena. "Where are we going?"

She glanced at him from the corner of her eye and asked back, "You are seven feet and four inches, right?"

He nodded. "Yeah."

She let out a baffled chuckle and said, "You won’t fit in those pods, so I asked Dr. Quad to make one that is suitable for you."

’Did she say the name that I think she did!?’ Rudy froze, his mouth agape in disbelief.

"What’s wrong?" She questioned with a smug look.

"Did you just say, Dr. Quad?" Rudy repeated just to make sure he hadn’t heard her wrong.

Elena nodded. "Yep."

"How is that possible...?" He asked, with a sombre look, as he couldn’t believe she could still be alive.

’Dr. Quad, real name Danica Adkins, the person who had discovered the method to generate essence energy from essence shards... but that was three centuries ago.’

He obviously knew that with each advancement, irregulars could live longer.

On average, regular humans lived at most sixty years, while even a deviant could live for at least eighty. However, no one truly knew the upper limit of their lifespan because most either died or advanced to the next rank before ever reaching that age. Once they advanced, the same uncertainty repeated itself for the new rank.

"Don’t stand like a statue. You’ll get your answers once you see her," Elena said.

’She is right,’ Rudy nodded, and both of them walked towards the development ward that he shouldn’t be able to access, but because he was Elena’s personal student, he had her authority to enter.

’As far as I know, Dr. Quad was a breaker, and even if she had completed her advancement task, she would still be an ascendant... I’ve never heard about an ascendant that has lived for three whole centuries,’ Rudy murmured in his head.

Both of them passed a metallic door, and Rudy slowed down, his heart beat loudly as he couldn’t believe the scene before his eyes. ’How is this possible?! Why are the walls blue and white, instead of red and black?’

’Are we still at the syndicate?’ He decided to keep his thoughts to himself and silently followed behind Elena.

After doing all of the needed scans and ID checkups, both of them stepped inside the Essence Research Wing, and Rudy’s eyes fell on various incomplete mechas that were neither slim nor broad but in between.

The place was full of heavy and high-tech machinery, and behind a holographic control panel stood a figure.

That figure was of a small, pale girl with white hair styled into thin twin-tails. Her vivid, red eyes stared at the control panel with a calm, detached expression; her face was eerily doll-like.

She wore a long white tactical lab coat fitted with straps, buckles, and mechanical connectors.

Beneath it, her lower body revealed sleek, dark-metal robotic legs — four large, segmented mechanical limbs resembling serpentine arms extended from her back.

’That’s... Dr. Quad? Why is she like that?’
