Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 126: If Uncle Hale Dies, You’ll Have No Money
These words were powerful and firm. David Hales listened with red eyes, gesturing with his hand, turning away and choking up, "It’s Dad’s narrow mindset, but... Elara is my only daughter, the only person in this world I can’t be at ease about. Don’t blame Dad."
Zion Fitzwilliam smiled, "Dad, I understand."
The Hale Family doesn’t have the immeasurable wealth that he has. David Hales has worked his whole life, and the wealth he’s accumulated might not even be enough to buy a watch, but to an ordinary person, that’s half a lifetime’s worth. David Hales worries that he might seize this money, insists on a promise from him, which he doesn’t feel insulted by, but rather is glad that in this world, someone loves Elara Hale so selflessly.
Meanwhile, in David Hales’s old apartment, a fierce argument erupted between Aidan Sommers and Yvette Sommers.
Yvette Sommers pointed at Aidan Sommers’s head, and said sharply, "I’ll say it again, you don’t need to go, their biological daughter is there, what face do you have as a stepson? Go to school, hear me?!"
Aidan Sommers was wearing school uniform, with a backpack, standing tall and thin there, holding a lunch box in his hand, which contained chicken soup he had made for David Hales since he got the news the night before.
Facing his mother’s anger, he didn’t back down, trying to reason with her, "Mom, Uncle Hale has treated me well. The education I receive, the food, drinks, and everything I use, which of them weren’t paid for by Uncle Hale? He’s going to have surgery, is there anything wrong with me going over to see? Do you really want me to ignore my close relatives and be an ungrateful person? Not only should I go, but you should also go and stay with him!"
Yvette Sommers was simply helpless with this son, angry and exasperated, she said, "I take care of a cripple, isn’t it right for him to give us money? Isn’t it right for him to raise you? Stop being silly! You’re in your senior year now, studying is way more important than that cripple!"
"Elara said that academic performance doesn’t represent everything. If a person doesn’t even have basic conscience, no matter how good the studies, it’s useless. Besides, my studies aren’t falling behind!" Aidan Sommers retorted.
Yvette Sommers angrily smashed a cup of water, "Elara, Elara, since when did you get so close to that little brat? She tied me to this old man and wants to ruin you! Stay away from her from now on, did you hear me?"
Aidan Sommers said nothing, turned and got a broom and dustpan, swept up the broken pieces on the ground, and threw them into the trash can.
Then he looked at Yvette Sommers, speaking one word at a time, "Mom, you married Uncle Hale, you pursued it. She lets you take care of Uncle Hale, gives you fifteen thousand a month, how much have you spent and embezzled, do you really think she doesn’t know? She just left you some dignity. You are attracted to the money, she is attracted to you taking care of Uncle Hale, today Uncle Hale is having surgery, if you don’t go, do you think she will still trust you to take care of Uncle Hale in the future?"
Seeing Yvette Sommers’s stupefied expression, Aidan Sommers curved his lips in ridicule, his mother here only listens to reason when it concerns her own interests.
He looked at Yvette Sommers, spoke one word at a time, "Mom, people are not fools, if you don’t go today, she will definitely not let you continue to take care of Uncle Hale. Do you have a better option then? If you take good care of Uncle Hale, the money comes, and everyone is happy, what’s wrong with that? If I were you, I wouldn’t curse Uncle Hale to die, because if Uncle Hale dies, you won’t get money anymore, and will be kicked out."
Yvette Sommers instinctively replied, "How could I be kicked out? I’m married to David Hales, and we have the certificate, his property is partly mine!"
Aidan Sommers laughed at her for being simple-minded, "What kind of relationship do you have with them for them to split their assets with you? You won’t even bother with the appearance of wholehearted, selfless dedication. Property can be arranged by will, if you want to split their money, at least put in an equivalent effort, do you really think a marriage certificate has them in your grasp?"
He didn’t want to waste words with Yvette Sommers anymore, only said one last sentence, "Mom, conscience can exchange for conscience. Uncle Hale and Elara are kind people, if you treat them well, they won’t treat you badly. If you continue like this, hard days are ahead. If Uncle Hale’s leg heals, how long do you think he will tolerate you?"
After saying these words, he turned and left.
This was all he could do. He lost his dad early, and his mother was a person of this nature. He felt a long-lost familial bond from Uncle Hale and Elara, he wasn’t willing to lose it just like this.
He hoped his mother could listen. If she couldn’t, maybe after this surgery, he truly wouldn’t have a home anymore.
In the room, Yvette Sommers pondered Aidan Sommers’s words, the more she thought about them, the more startled she became. Yes, when Elara first got divorced she was broke and without connections, unable to find good care, which led her to sign a contract with her. She was about to divorce David Hales back then, it was the contract that made her stay.
Logically speaking, she was effectively a caregiver hired by Elara, with her main duty being taking care of David Hales. But for the past six months, other than being enthusiastic when collecting money, she showed them hardly any kindness.
If David Hales’s leg were cured this time... no, even if not cured, if Elara wanted to replace her, it would be easy. She was aware Elara had been earning quite a bit each month lately.
Yvette Sommers weighed it over, felt it was worthwhile to go, and not only go but perform well in front of Elara, after all, fifteen thousand a month, nowhere else could money be earned this easily.
Hospital.
It was already time for the surgery, David Hales was wheeled into the operating room, Elara and Zion Fitzwilliam anxiously waited outside, Zion Fitzwilliam comforted her, "Don’t worry, Dad is a good person and will surely be okay."
Last night Dr. Chambers called him, repeatedly assured that the surgery would definitely succeed.
Elara was surprised at how smoothly he called him "Dad," but said nothing, forcing a smile, logically it’s one thing, emotionally it’s another; she only has this one relative, worry is unavoidable.
Just then, Aidan Sommers came out of the elevator with a backpack, walking over quickly.
Elara was a bit surprised, "What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to have class today?"
Aidan Sommers sat down on a nearby chair, a trace of discomfort flickered in his eyes, harshly said, "What’s it got to do with you whether I go to school or not? I just want to go out and have fun, there’s food and drinks here as well as air-conditioning, I’m not going to suffer in school."
Elara curved her lips, didn’t expose his lie. Her father had told her, Aidan Sommers had been very focused lately, often studying late into the night in his room.
Clearly worried about his uncle’s surgery, especially coming over to stay, yet insisted on saying it as if he were tough. This kid, so pretentious.
But, in adolescence, they challenge everything and everyone, she understands.
In fact, Aidan Sommers having such a heart moved her deeply. Three and a half years is enough to see through a person; Aidan Sommers wasn’t a truly bad kid from the start, his softness wrapped in a seemingly careless shell, a bit pitiful too.
Elara didn’t mention Yvette Sommers, while Aidan Sommers seemed a little nervous and said, "My mom said she’ll come over at noon, bring some liquid food for Uncle Hale."
Paused for a moment, then handed over the lunch box, "My mom made it."
Elara was a bit surprised, openly asked, "Auntie Yvette made it or you made it?"
Aidan Sommers somewhat awkwardly and fiercely replied, "I said my mom made it, can’t you understand human language? You’re still a student at a famous university, with this level, I won’t bother applying to your lousy university."
From his reaction, Elara guessed it, struck a chord, and was angry from embarrassment. This chicken soup was definitely made by Aidan Sommers.
Think about it, what temper does Yvette Sommers have, how could she possibly make chicken soup for her father.
Elara thought of the previous decision, looked at Aidan Sommers, hesitated to speak, ultimately said, "No matter what our relationship is in the future, I acknowledge you as a brother."
Aidan Sommers’s body stiffened, he understood clearly.
The thing I worried most about still had to happen...
He looked sullen, and snapped, "I don’t need an extra sister like you."
Turning his face away, his eyes were slightly red.
Elara didn’t say anything further; Aidan was a smart boy, and she knew he understood.
The four-hour surgery felt as if it stretched over four years. Finally, the door to the operating room opened, and Dr. Chambers’ assistant emerged, smiling, "The surgery was a success! Dr. Chambers wanted to relieve your anxiety, so he sent me to let you know first. There is just a bit of wrapping up to finish inside, and in ten minutes he will be moved to the ward!"
Elara was overwhelmed with excitement and fear of misunderstanding, eagerly grabbing the assistant to ask, "Does this mean that my father’s leg is healed? Can he walk again?"
The assistant nodded with a smile, "Yes, the nerves have been reconnected. The extent of recovery isn’t clear yet; it depends on the rehabilitation. But theoretically, your father now has the condition to walk again."
Elara was overjoyed, thanking repeatedly, "Thank you, thank you..."
She was truly elated; this was the best news she had ever heard!
Elara was so excited she wanted to cry. Zion Fitzwilliam patted her on the shoulder, also happy, "The big worry in your heart is finally lifted."
Elara agreed inwardly, yes, the big worry was finally lifted. Her father could stand up again; these three years had been like a nightmare for her, let alone for her father.
Just then, an excited voice came from behind, coming closer, "This is really great, thank goodness, Old Hale can walk again. Our days will just get better and better!"
Elara looked up to see Yvette Sommers rushing over with two large food boxes. Meeting Elara’s gaze, she hurriedly said, "I’m not too late, right? I rushed out last night after getting your call to buy squab. It’s supposed to be good for recovery, but it was too late, and all the supermarkets were closed. I couldn’t buy any, so I had to get up early today to buy them. I stewed these two pigeons for over four hours; they’re tender and perfect for someone who just had surgery!"
Elara looked at her in surprise; was Yvette actually this kind-hearted?
After three years of knowing Yvette, if not deeply understanding her, Elara at least knew what kind of person she was—self-interested, opportunistic, and hierarchical.
Was she really kind enough to stew soup for her father?
Could she have drugged the soup?
But then she thought, Yvette wouldn’t dare to drug it, and what would be the benefit of doing so?
No matter what, Yvette’s current behavior was good, so Elara didn’t say much. Perhaps observing further was best; as long as Yvette treated her father well, even if it was just superficially, she wouldn’t make things difficult for her.
Behind her, Aidan saw Yvette and a flicker of joy crossed his face, quickly replaced by anxiety. His mother had come too late, would it change Elara’s mind?
David Hales was soon wheeled out, still anesthetized, lying with closed eyes. Yvette watched him tearfully, "Old Hale endured so much suffering."
She worriedly observed David Hales, occasionally lifting the blanket to look at the bandaged area on his leg, occasionally tucking him in.
She sat down, turned to Elara, sighed, and with red eyes said, "Elara, don’t look at me like that. I’ve been with your dad for over three years, planning to spend a lifetime with him. I admit I’m a bit harsh, but I mean no harm to your dad. I want him to be well."
Elara just responded with an "Hmm," without speaking.
She didn’t believe a word Yvette said. If Yvette had any genuine feelings for her father, Elara wouldn’t have been forced to replace her.
Perhaps seeing her father’s leg healed, Yvette was afraid he’d abandon her?
Elara didn’t easily trust Yvette’s words. This was an opportunity; she wanted Yvette to understand who was the true mistress of this family.
If she wanted to earn this money, she needed to be prepared for earning it.
Yvette couldn’t gauge Elara’s thoughts, feeling anxious internally. It seemed she needed to perform well.
She turned to Aidan, her face stern, "Your Uncle Hale’s surgery is over, you should return to school. Staying here is a waste of time, and the high school exams are approaching, you need to focus, understand?"
Aidan didn’t say a word, shouldered his bag, and walked out.
Yvette was infuriated by him, "This child is getting more and more disobedient."
After half an hour, David Hales slowly woke up, with Yvette diligently attending, "Old Hale, how do you feel? Does your wound hurt? You’ve had nothing to eat or drink since last night, are you hungry? I made pigeon soup, would you like to drink a couple of bowls?"
David Hales instinctively frowned; what’s Yvette up to?
Elara stepped forward, joyfully saying, "Dad, the surgery was a great success; Dr. Chambers says you now have the condition to stand up. Once the wounds heal, you can try walking exercises."
Upon hearing this, David Hales was also thrilled, saying to Elara, "It’s all thanks to Zion; you must thank him properly!"
Zion Fitzwilliam spoke up at the perfect moment, "Dad, we’re family, there’s no need for such formalities. It’s what I should do."
David Hales insisted, "A big favor is a big favor; it can’t be negated just because you’re a son-in-law."
Elara added, "Zion, thank you so much this time. My dad’s successful surgery is entirely thanks to you. Consider me owing you one."
Upon hearing her final words, Zion swallowed his initial denial.
Owing him one? That sounded nice.
Could it be used in the future to offset his deception...
