Chapter 134: Door to the Past - Honor and Courage_3
"Sealing the portal is one method. Even though we don’t know why the portal appeared in the first place, it was undisturbed for thousands of years prior. After sealing it, it should remain undisturbed for another several thousand years. But this is only an estimate, the portal could reappear in decades or centuries. So the most fundamental solution is to traverse through the portal, arrive at the opposite world, and strike down the enemy. This will ensure that such a catastrophe doesn’t happen again."
Kyle furrowed his brow, mulling over the words: "If we go to the other side, we’ll be facing tens and possibly hundreds of millions of undead, including countless legendaries, and there may even be a significant number of demigods. Furthermore, we may have to face an even older, undead being created from the corpse of a First Epoch creature that has been tainted with divinity, and ultimately, a newborn god of death?"
"No, not a god. The filthy body of the undead is incapable of bearing the descent of a god’s divine soul, so what we will be facing, is not a god, but merely the divine soul." Mina’s voice was very solemn: "Regardless, it’s still extremely dangerous. I would advise against your going."
"You...advise against "us" going?" Kyle asked word by word: "So you’re saying, regardless of what we choose, you’re going anyway?"
"Yes, even if I can’t kill him, as long as I can confront him, I have ways to severely wound him. At that point, he wouldn’t be able to recover without a span of ten thousand years. Without his support, the returning undead will return to the earth."
"What method?" Kyle asked in detail.
"If I don’t get the chance to kill him, I would dispel my own protection, attracting him to possess my body. An unprotected body, to a divine soul, is the greatest temptation. As he descends, I would trigger a self-destruct, this would severely hurt an unprotected divine soul." Mina’s voice was very calm, as if she wasn’t referring to her own demise: "This method has been used by an elder of the Drakes in the distant past against a fallen deity’s divine soul, and is absolutely feasible. Of course, as a living being, I don’t want to die, so I suggest, or rather—I beseech you all, to wait at the entrance of the portal...for fifteen days. Fifteen days later, if I can’t return, seal the portal and inform the Drakes of this matter."
"We’ve been underestimated, huh." Kyle tightened his grip on Nellie’s hand and turned his eyes to the knight by his side.
"Yeah, we’ve been underestimated." Nellie brushed her long hair back and gave a little smile: "Lady Mina, we are sorry, but we cannot accept your request."
"Allow a lady to face danger alone while hiding safely, merely watching as she confronts death, the most we can do is to cast a seal on her tomb?" Kyle held his head high, his body as straight as a spear, and his face showed an unspoken pride and vanity: "If I did that, what right would I have to be seen as the pride of humanity, as the perfect human?"
"Both of you..." Mina’s voice quivered, as she felt something obstructing her chest.
"Not just the two of us." Kyle’s smile was as bright as the sun: "I made it clear in the letters, everyone comes prepared to arrange their affairs posthumously. Thus, everyone is here with an unyielding resolution. Don’t believe me? Look behind you."
Mina turned around, puzzled, and found that the bonfire was intentionally put out by someone and everyone began packing. As her gaze passed over each individual, all she saw was the calm acceptance of mortality.
"The surname ’Golden’ has been passed down for nearly ten thousand years from the mid-Third Epoch, it has never been tarnished by cowardice or weakness. If I were to back down now, I would be unworthy to wield my hammer and tongs." Spoke the burly dwarf.
"I have a younger sister, if I die here, she will become the next Elf Queen." The slender elf plucked his bowstrings.
"We Sand People are the safest, undead can’t kill what lies beneath the surface of the sand, so, I absolutely won’t die." A mound of sand slowly moves across the sandy ground.
"Wherever Sister Nellie goes, we go." "Even if we die, a new pair of Light and Dark Twins will soon be born in our tribe. We are not being thoughtless about our people." The twins of Light and Dark spread out their wings.
"Our ancestors wouldn’t accept a soul that fears challenges, we Beastmen will always be fearless." The elderly beastman helps a younger one to stand.
"Are there really ancient souls from the First Epoch slumbering there? Don’t get my hopes up for nothing!" The robed mage flexed his fingers, the flames at his fingertips coalescing into a very lifelike skull.
"Can I not go?" "Little Kera if you dare to stay back, don’t expect us to cooperate with your schemes again." "I told you that’s doing business, not scamming. And stop calling me Little Kera. Uh OK, forget what I said."
"Roar, I want to go home, roar." The strange lion still cowered with his head in his hands, seemingly oblivious to the conversation around him and continued to mumble.
"See." Kyle spread his hands with a smile: "This is everyone’s opinion."
"You!" Mina’s golden eyes flashed with light: "Have you all considered that each of you may die, no one can be exempt."
"We are certainly going to die. Who can live forever?" Kyle held Nellie’s hand more tightly, his face glowing with radiance: "But if we forsake honor and courage from fear of death, then even if we lived forever, how are we different from the walking carcasses of the undead? That is the real terror."
