Chapter 146: Bitterness

Adalaine’s hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her jaw was clenched, lips pressed into a firm, angry line as she drove through the city streets. The engine of her luxury car roared as she pressed down on the gas pedal harder than necessary, the speedometer needle climbing with her rising temper.

"That damn woman," she muttered under her breath, her nails digging into the leather of the steering wheel. Delphinia. Always Delphinia. It was infuriating how that woman always seemed to come out on top no matter what.

Adalaine had spent years making sure Kai saw Delphinia for what she truly was—worthless, disposable. And yet, every time she saw her, Delphinia looked anything but miserable. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

She had been so sure that after the divorce, Delphinia would fade into nothing, that she would be left to rot in her own misery, abandoned and unwanted. But no. That woman was thriving.

Adalaine’s lips curled in a sneer, and she exhaled sharply through her nose. "She should be suffering," she spat, gripping the wheel even tighter. "She should be begging for scraps, drowning in regret." Instead, she looked happy, as if leaving Kai had been the best thing that ever happened to her. The thought made Adalaine’s blood boil.

She had fought tooth and nail for Kai, had whispered into his ears about how Delphinia was never the right woman for him, how she was weak and unworthy. She had ensured that Kai’s attention was only on her, that he realized who truly deserved his love and devotion. And yet, it felt like all of that was for nothing because Delphinia had moved on as if none of it mattered.

No. That wasn’t acceptable.

Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to relax. Her grip on the wheel loosened, and she adjusted her posture. No matter. She was going to marry Kai. She had already won. Delphinia could keep pretending to be happy, but at the end of the day, Adalaine would be the one standing by Kai’s side, living the life Delphinia had once dreamed of. That was all that mattered.

Smirking, she pulled into the long driveway leading to the house she and Kai now shared—a house that had once belonged to Delphinia. Initially, it hadn’t bothered her. If anything, she had taken some sick satisfaction in knowing she had taken everything from that woman. But now... now it irritated her.

This was Delphinia’s old home. The walls, the rooms, the furniture—it all carried remnants of her presence. And that was unacceptable.

She parked the car and stepped out, adjusting her dress before striding toward the front door. Her heels clicked against the pavement, a rhythmic sound that only fueled her confidence. She pushed the door open and stepped inside, the scent of Kai’s cologne wafting toward her.

In the living room, Kai was lounging on the couch, his tie loosened, and his suit jacket carelessly draped beside him. He looked up at her with a small, tired smile. "You’re back."

Adalaine let a slow, sultry smile stretch across her lips as she walked toward him, placing her handbag on the nearest table. "Oh? You’re home early," she noted, tilting her head slightly.

Kai shrugged, running a hand through his dark hair. "Nothing particularly interesting at work today, so I thought I’d come home and relax."

Adalaine let out a small, amused hum before moving closer, sliding onto his lap with practiced ease. "Then let me help you relax," she purred, her fingers trailing down his chest before cupping his face. Without waiting for a response, she leaned in and pressed her lips to his, her kiss slow and deliberate, meant to claim him.

Kai responded, his hands settling on her waist as he pulled her closer. The kiss deepened for a moment before Adalaine pulled away, her nails lightly scratching against his jawline as she smirked down at him.

"Kai," she began, her voice smooth and coaxing. "I want us to move."

Kai frowned slightly. "Move? Why?"

Adalaine sighed dramatically, shifting so that she could cup his face with both hands. "This house... it’s filled with memories of her. I don’t want to live in a place that still has traces of your ex-wife. I want a new home, something that’s ours—just you and me."

Kai studied her for a moment, his brows furrowing slightly as if considering her words. But Adalaine knew exactly how to get what she wanted. She leaned in, brushing her lips against his jawline as she whispered, "Don’t you want a fresh start? A place where we can create our own memories, without anything or anyone from the past lingering?"

Kai sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "If that’s what you want... then fine. We’ll start looking for a new place."

Adalaine flashed a big smile, pressing another kiss to his lips. "That’s all I needed to hear."

Adalaine hid her smile as she pulled back, watching the way Kai exhaled heavily, his shoulders slumping in reluctant acceptance. Of course, he would say yes. He always did. It wasn’t that hard to get what she wanted—not with him.

She had learned a long time ago that Kai could never truly say no to her. Whether it was moving to a new place, changing plans at the last second, or convincing him to stay just a little longer when he was ready to leave, all it took was the right words, the right touch.

It wasn’t manipulation, not really. She simply knew him. Knew how to soften the edges of his resistance, how to make him see things her way without forcing it.

Adalaine tilted her head, watching as he rubbed his temple, clearly torn. But the moment he had agreed, it was over. There would be no taking it back. He would start looking for a new place just like she wanted, even if it hadn’t been something he’d considered before.

She reached for his hand, lacing her fingers through his, her voice sweet. "You won’t regret this, Kai. I promise."

As she got up, she cast a glance around the living room, taking in every corner, every piece of furniture, knowing that soon, all of this would be gone. She wouldn’t let Delphinia have any hold over this house, over Kai.

As she stood and adjusted her dress, a cold, satisfied smirk tugged at her lips.

I won’t let you win, Delphinia, she thought to herself.

And with that, she walked away, already planning her next move.
