Chapter 50: Learn About The Truth

As Abigail walked toward the lobby, she was surprised to hear Ryland say, "Thank you, Abigail, for your help."

She didn’t want to respond, but this shameless man would bother her all the way to the main entrance.

Without looking at him, she replied lazily, "There’s no need to thank me. I’m here for the fee for my design, not to help your company." She quickened her pace and turned into the women’s restroom to avoid him.

A relieved smile spread across Ryland’s lips as Abigail disappeared from his view.

He walked toward the lobby and muttered, "I’m sorry, Abigail. I’m lying to you. I never paid a medical fee for your grandma."

Ryland felt he had no choice but to deceive her to achieve his goal. He couldn’t risk the company he built while still in college by starting over if this project failed.

They needed exposure to promote their business. If the public learned that Mr. Andy Bennet, the CEO of Silverstone Group, was using their company to build his summer cabin, other wealthy people in the country would likely hire them for their property developments.

He could picture the future of this collaboration: a substantial income and the exposure necessary to elevate Urbangrid Innovation in the industry.

As Ryland was about to leave the lobby, his cell phone suddenly rang. A smile spread across his face when he saw who was calling.

He quickly walked to the seating area and settled onto the sofa before answering the call.

"Hi, babe. Don’t be nervous..."

Ryland chuckled softly at Vanessa’s anxious voice on the other end.

"I try not to, but it was hard. How did it go?" she asked.

"Everything is alright, babe. Your sister showed up, and we finished talking to Mr. Bennet. They won’t cancel the project," Ryland explained happily.

"Thank goodness. What about my sister? Has she left yet? Does she believe the story about the hospital fee?"

"Yes, she has left. Just so you know, she really didn’t like me. She didn’t even look at my face for more than a second. Of course, she believes the story about her grandma’s medical fees."

"She can be so foolish!"

Ryland laughed at Vanessa’s words about her sister.

"Vanessa, your sister isn’t stupid; she’s just innocent. How could she think I would spend even a penny on her grandma’s medical expenses?"

Ryland shook his head, recalling when Abigail decided to pay the monthly expenses for her Grandma’s nursing home.

"Looks like your sister forgot how much I hated when she used her own money to cover her grandma’s nursing home fees. Why should your sister concern herself with that old woman when she’s nearing the end of her life?"

"I know, right? She really lacks common sense. I heard from my mother that she asked our father to borrow money. Ugh, I’m curious—how did she think you paid for the hospital?"

Vanessa questioned, prompting a deep sigh from Ryland.

"Maybe the hospital staff gave her the wrong information," Ryland replied with a laugh, reflecting on the situation. "Alright, alright...enough about your sister. Just thinking about her gives me a headache. I’d better go now. I miss you, babe."

"Me too. Hurry up! I’ll be waiting for you in my sexy gown, my favorite lingerie..."

"Damn, Vanessa Snow. You’re making my little brother hard now. I’ll come back fast. Bye, I love you—" Ryland said while rushing to leave the hotel lobby.

Without Ryland realizing it, Abigail stood not far from his seat. Her face flushed red as if all the blood had rushed to her cheeks; she was furious. Her hands were tightly clenched at her sides as she listened to every word from Ryland’s lips.

She felt her whole body tremble after learning that Ryland had lied to her about her grandmother’s hospital bill to lure her to meet Andy Bennet.

Abigail struggled to stand as her legs felt shaky. Hurriedly, she dragged her feet to a nearby sofa. She needed to sit down, or she might collapse now.

Once settled on the single sofa, her eyes sharply tracked Ryland’s back until he disappeared. An annoyed smile crept onto her lips as a thought filled her mind.

’How dare you use me, Ryland Wood? After I was kind enough to help your company? You are so cruel! Do you think I’m stupid? You’re so wrong about me, Ryland Wood... so wrong!’

After venting her frustrations silently, Abigail stood up and walked out of the Century Hotel.

While walking to the bus stop, she pulled out her cell phone and dialed Andy Bennet’s number.

"Ms. Snow? I don’t expect your call to be this soon. Is there something else you’d like to discuss?" Andy’s surprised tone was clearly heard from the other end.

"I’m sorry to call you this soon, Mr. Bennet..." Abigail greeted, gripping her phone tightly before continuing, "Yes, there’s something I need to discuss. I mean, to tell you."

"Oh, alright. What is it, Ms. Snow?" Andy Bennet said happily.

"Sir, if you don’t mind, please forget what I said earlier in the meeting. You are free to do whatever you wish with Urbangrid Innovation."

"Wait, which comment are you referring to?" Andy asked, clearly confused.

Abigail quickly explained her earlier statement, leaving Andy Bennet shocked.

"Ms. Snow, are you sure about this?" Andy asked again, concerned he might have misunderstood her. He recalled that Abigail had previously asked him not to cancel the cooperative contract with Urbangrid.

"Yes, sir, I’m sure."

"But earlier, you asked me not to cancel it, even though you no longer work there. Can I ask why you suddenly want me to cancel the cooperation?"

Abigail couldn’t tell him the real reason. She tightened her grip on her cell phone before responding to Andy’s question.

"Sir, I’m not explicitly asking you to cancel the project with them. I’m just asking you to disregard my earlier request. Apologies... Mr. Bennet, I can’t explain why I suddenly changed my words."

"Okay, I understand."

"And, I would be grateful if you don’t mention anything about our conversation to them, sir..."

"I’ll follow your instructions, Ms. Snow." A light laugh came from the other end of the line, bringing delight and relief to Abigail.
