Chapter 60: A promise to his grandfather
The doctor did as he was ordered, mirroring Haruki’s relaxed countenance. He opened the wine with quick movements and a pop filled the air before the sound of pouring liquid filled the air.
The man watched everything happen as though he had not just intruded into someone’s house. He gave no response to the question Haruki had asked him.
"Do you want a glass?" Haruki asked leisurely when he tasted the wine from the glass. He was good at masking his emotions or he would have exposed the bit of fear crawling up into his thoughts. If the man had gotten to the penthouse when the building was usually very secure whenever he stayed over.
There was no way he would have come this far into the building without being noticed by his guards. He could enter the house as quietly as a ghost.
"I don’t mind," the man finally spoke when Haruki decided to ignore him and finish his dinner.
"Send one of your men to get it," Haruki ordered carefreely as he gestured for the doctor to sit.
Hiroshi’s heart pounded hard, he could almost guess what Haruki was thinking. There was an intruder in Haruki’s house and none of his guards were around.
The men before them were fully armed, and any slight attempt to start a fight could lead to a bloodbath, considering the hostility the guards did not bother to tone down.
The man leaned forward his eyes getting very cold in that instance as though he was not the one laughing a few minutes ago. "I see that you did not learn much from your grandfather," the man finally said.
"Who are you?" Haruki asked calmly after a sip of wine. "First entering my house without permission and second, speaking without an atom of respect towards your host, I don’t see the need to listen to your criticism," Haruki did not bother to be respectful as he spoke to the man although he was careful not to overdo it.
The man laughed again but it did not get to his eyes as he fixed his gaze on Haruki. "I am sorry I did not introduce myself to you," the man began his voice as cold as the gaze in his eyes.
"Go ahead, I am all ears, who are you?" Haruki reached for the napkin in slow deliberate movements and mopped his lips.
"Your grandfather loved to call me Sergei, feel free to call me that too," the man announced.
"You speak my language very well, did my grandfather teach you?" Haruki asked as though he was having a leisurely conversation with a friend.
"No, he did not. I lived here for a while and I had a lot of friends aside from your grandfather," the man responded mirroring Haruki’s manner of speech.
"Oh, that is a good thing. I heard that to learn a language fast, you need to make friends with the native speakers," Haruki said ignoring the threat laced in those words.
"Hmm, I have to agree with you on that that is why I know that the way you handled with does not speak the language I am familiar with. The one I learnt from my friends, your grandfather included."
"I wish I knew what you mean by that after all, we are meeting for the first time. Could you be a bit more specific?"
"Who will you give me in exchange for my son? I need someone you love as much as I love my son," the man decided not to beat around the bush anymore.
"Me?" Haruki asked pointing at himself. "Do I know how much you love your son? We don’t even know each other," Haruki had no intention of getting to the point.
"Could you stop all those word games? I don’t think I can be any more patient with you. I am a lot older and perhaps I don’t have as much time as you youngsters, well unless you want to end up like your son, then I will assume I have a lot more time."
Haruki found it interesting that the man had chosen to beat around the bush with him, especially after just losing his well-behaved son. Haruki decided to avoid such games and met the man’s gaze ready to discuss business.
"I have nothing to do with you. I left it to the police to handle, just like you went through the media when your son went missing.," Haruki told him firmly.
"And who lied to you that that is possible?" the man asked coldly. "You don’t mean it, do you? I went through the media to give you enough time to salvage the situation but you handed those bastards over to the police?"
"There was no way I was going to keep criminals in my house when the police were hunting them down. You should understand how strict the law is against people like that and the moment they find out that my family was involved, do you think they will be merciful enough to ask for an explanation if I hide the criminal? Please be logical."
"Yeah, I came here to be logical. I lost my beloved son and I want something in return. I am a businessman and I will only accept something of the same value," the man informed him.
Haruki knew very well that the best way to ease all this was to handle it the underworld way by bringing the man’s son to him along with the heads of his granduncle and his sons.
With a few words of condolence, all that happened would be erased, and the man would head back to his country peacefully, but he had chosen the law over the underworld.
He had Ren inform the police of the site when the body was found and he did not handle all the affairs himself through their rules.
He did it to save his family, his business, and the years of sweat and hard work of his grandfather. But in doing so, he offended a few people — some not directly involved but still part of the underworld.
This could seem like a declaration of war and detachment from the underworld as they wouldn’t want to trust someone who gave people up to the police.
His granduncle had spent most of his life as part of the underworld, involved in crimes and meeting other criminals having such a person whose head was filled with so much information, felt like a massive betrayal to those his grandfather once worked with.
Deep down, he wished he had handled it in the underworld way as that would ease things up with his past business partners.
He would have handled the police separately and there was nothing they would be able to do about it if he used the support he has from the underworld through Ren but that would have been the birth of a cancer that would spread too wide and the support he had from the government will most definitely diminish slowly.
If that happened, it won’t be too long before people target him and with a bit of falsified evidence, they might completely eradicate him from the business world. No one will care if the document is falsified because he no longer has the support of the government and the royal family.
Haruki sighed and met the man’s gaze. "I know I handled it in a language you do not understand but there is nothing I could do about it. My grandfather’s dream was to completely legalize our business to completely eradicate any chance of the government seizing all we have.
"This is a promise he made to his father-in-law and wife. It is also a promise I made when I became chairman. It is something I must stick to as much as I love the game of the underworld. If you were truly a friend of my grandfather, then you must know that all I said is the truth and nothing else."
"Do you think you can ever completely become a family who does hundred per cent legal business?" the man asked his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Do you think there is anyone as rich as you who does their business without either using the law to their advantage or simply doing a bit illegal businesses on the side?"
"I know there are," Haruki responded confidently. "I don’t want to be a good person but as long as I can fulfil my grandfather’s dream, that’s all I desire."
The man watched Haruki intently as silence filled the room. He reached for his glass of wine and gulped down the contents of the glass before rising. "We will see each other soon. I will give you two weeks to think of how you will appease me. This is me being very considerate."
Haruki watched the man walk out of his home as though he was taking a stroll through a park and he noticed the man had not even bothered to take his shoes off. Haruki reached under the table and touched a cold metal. He traced the shape of the gun before reluctantly pulling his hand away.
"Clean the dishes and leave." He left a command before going upstairs.
Watching Haruki leave made him want to grab the kitchen knife and go after that old man. He shook his head when he realized how dark his thoughts had gotten.
