Chapter 29: Audition Day (2)

Even though five years had passed, Charlotte’s appearance still looked as young as before, and that was the advantage of being a werewolf.

They weren’t immortal, but their aging process was three times slower than humans. Therefore, werewolf celebrities tended to have longer careers than ordinary humans.

Unfortunately, Charlotte didn’t have the same spark she used to. Her appearance hadn’t changed, but the way she saw the world had shifted drastically.

The unhealed wound in her heart made it difficult to keep her spirits up, but she would try her best not to drown in her pain anymore.

"I need to go first, Mrs. Dawson." Tatiana patted her shoulder lightly before walking away. "I can’t wait to see your best performance."

Right.

Charlotte reminded herself as she watched Tatiana leave. She had come here to give her best, to rebuild her career from the ground up.

Today, she only needed to focus on herself, so she could stand on equal ground with Damon in the future.

Charlotte then went to the 12th floor, where the audition was being held. After registering her name, she waited in the waiting room with the other candidates.

She deliberately wore a mask to avoid being recognized by others in the room.

However, the real reason was that she simply didn’t want to have a conversation before the audition.

The coordinator called their names one by one.

The time they spent inside varied, some stayed in the room for a long time, while others came out after just two minutes.

Just from that alone, everyone could guess how their performance went.

After waiting for almost two hours, the coordinator finally called her name. "Charlotte Dawson."

"Charlotte what?!" The room erupted into chaos.

Several candidates turned to look at her, their eyes wide with disbelief. Whispers filled the air as they began murmuring to each other.

"Is that Charlotte Dawson?" one of them asked.

"It can’t be! Why would she audition like the rest of us?" another added, craning her neck to get a better look at the masked woman.

"Isn’t her husband’s business in trouble now?"

Charlotte sighed inwardly, silently cursing anyone who brought up Julian’s name.

Charlotte took a deep breath before she walked into the casting room, ignoring the talk about her scum ex-husband.

There were five people inside the room; the producer, the director, the vice director, the book writer, and the CEO.

Charlotte gave Damon a faint smile before she shifted her gaze to the book writer.

The movie "Broken Bond" was based on a best-selling novel written by Nina Montgomery.

Her novel was loved by so many readers for its depiction of the painful journey of Lena Carter as she escaped an abusive relationship and did her best to rebuild her life with her daughter, Olivia.

Charlotte had read the novel numerous times while practicing her script, and she could feel the pain of the main character so deeply.

The book was phenomenal, so she was a bit scared of ruining the readers’ expectations of the movie.

"Good afternoon, Charlotte." The director—Logan Barnes—greeted her.

Damon hadn’t mentioned anything about Charlotte to the movie director, so Logan had been caught off guard when her name appeared on the list.

"Charlotte Dawson," Logan continued, "I wasn’t expecting to see you here today. It’s been a while since we’ve seen you on the screen."

Charlotte offered a polite smile. "Yes, it has. But I’m ready to make a comeback."

Logan lifted his eyebrows, feeling intrigued. "And you chose this role to make your return? Interesting choice."

"Then, let’s see what you’ve got." The director turned the page to the scene Charlotte had chosen to perform. "The stage is yours."

Charlotte took a deep breath, focusing her mind to play the scene in her mind over and over again.

Damon had been expecting Charlotte to choose the scene where the main character’s husband abuses her. Because it would be easy for her to portray that scene with her real experience.

But Charlotte ended up choosing a different scene—the monologue where the main character broke down after a grueling workday at the laundromat.

Once she was ready, she suddenly sat on the floor, imagining herself in the quiet living room of a small apartment.

She pulled her knees to her chest and rested her head on them. Charlotte’s blue eyes lost their spark in a second, looking empty, like an ocean under the dark night sky.

She had only acted for no more than two minutes, but everyone was already holding their breath.

Charlotte let out a tired sigh before speaking her monologue. "Can anyone hear me? God? Ghost? Whatever ... just ... please, hear me."

Her voice cracked, coated in desperation and exhaustion. She chuckled lightly, realizing she was talking to herself like a madman.

But at that moment, she had no one to rely on, except for the ghost in her room.

"I met a horrible customer today," she began, her voice trembling with suppressed frustration. "She accused me of stealing her gold necklace that she claimed was in the pocket of her clothes."

"I didn’t do it, but she kept yelling at me, and no one believed me," Charlotte whispered, "They said a poor single mom like me must love to steal."

"Haha ... what a joke. I don’t even see her necklace" She buried her face on her knees, sobbing softly. "But no one ... no one wanted to believe me. Even the owner fired me without listening to my words." freёnovelkiss.com

"Did I make a wrong choice?" Charlotte lifted her head, looking up at the ceiling. "Leaving him? I thought I was doing the right thing for her ... for us. But now ...,"

Her expression shifted from sadness to anger. Charlotte raised her voice when she shouted, "Did I make the wrong choice?! Leaving him? Was it a mistake?!"

Her breathing became labored as her anger boiled over. She clenched her fists tightly. "I thought I was saving us!"

"But look at me now... beaten down, accused, fired, and struggling to keep a roof over our heads." Charlotte ruffled her hair. She yelled out of her lungs. "Fuck! Answer me!"

The director was so captivated by her performance that he almost forgot to deliver his line.

For a moment, the room was filled with an awed silence until he softly spoke, "Mama."

In just one deep breath, Charlotte cast away all her anger and sadness as she heard the imagined voice.

She turned her head toward the door, her expression softening as if she were seeing a little girl standing there, clutching a broken doll close to her chest.

"Oh, sweetheart." Charlotte’s lips curved into a warm, bright smile. "Did you break your doll again? Come here, let me fix it for you."

"Cut!" The director stood up from his chair and clapped so hard that everyone started to do the same. "That was phenomenal!"

The writer, Nina, was also impressed by her extraordinary performance.

She wasn’t the one who made the final decision on choosing the actress, but the director also valued her opinion.

"I’ve seen many performances of Lena since this morning," Nina said, a soft smile appearing on her face. "But this is the first time I’ve seen someone truly bring Lena to life."
