Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 193: Kneeling Before Her Every Day
Natalie froze for a second, not expecting to run into that ABC here.
She instinctively tried to pull her arm from ABC’s hand, but her gaze flickered and she didn’t pull away, allowing ABC to keep holding her arm, acting like they were very close.
Veronica Vincent sized up the ABC, then looked over at her grandson.
Isaac’s handsome face was tense, his long fingers gripping the shopping bag handles tightly—so tightly that his knuckles were white. It was obvious he was forcing down his emotions.
Veronica let out a soft sigh. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"Kendall, is this your friend?"
Natalie made a faint sound in agreement and, taking the opportunity, stepped to ABC’s side. She said to Veronica, "Sorry, I just remembered I have something to do with my friend. I’m afraid I can’t keep you company any longer."
Since things were like this, Veronica couldn’t insist on keeping her.
"It’s fine. Besides, you’ve already spent too much of your time today."
Natalie left together with that ABC.
As they left, the corners of ABC’s mouth nearly stretched to their ears in a grin.
Isaac’s cold eyes were fixed on the direction they left for a long while, unable to look away until Veronica patted him. "What are you still looking at? They’re long gone. You barely managed to say half a sentence just now."
Her tone was hard to describe, full of annoyance.
Isaac gave a self-mocking laugh. "Grandma, I have no right in front of her."
"That’s enough. Let’s go too."
Seeing him like this made Veronica’s heart ache as well.
Today was supposed to be a chance created just for him, but she hadn’t expected it to end like this.
Isaac took Veronica back to where he lived.
"Grandma, it’s just me here. Stay a few more days, let me keep you company, okay?"
"No, I can’t get used to the big city. I feel uncomfortable everywhere." Veronica refused.
She called him to her side, uncharacteristically reaching out to take his hand. "Kendall isn’t the cold-hearted type, but from how she acted toward you today, I can tell you must have hurt her deeply."
Isaac dropped his head. "It’s my fault. I did terrible things."
"If you know you were terrible, then change." Veronica gave him a hard slap on the back. "Whether you have to admit your faults, or whatever."
If admitting his faults would help, he was willing to kneel in front of her every day.
But...
*
At night, Veronica sat on the guest room bed and called Natalie.
"Sweetheart, you’re not sleeping yet?"
"Not yet. How come you’re still awake?"
"I’m about to go to sleep." Veronica sighed. "But I have something on my mind, can’t sleep."
Natalie understood Veronica had something to say, so she waited to listen.
"It’s nothing else, just wanted to apologize to you. Today I overstepped because of my age and made things hard for you, didn’t I?"
Natalie hadn’t expected Veronica to apologize to her.
She thought Veronica was going to speak on Isaac’s behalf.
"About you and Isaac, I shouldn’t interfere. But I can’t help but feel for him, he’s always been my soft spot. But don’t worry, today was the only time. I won’t get involved again."
"I don’t blame you," Natalie said softly.
"You’re a good kid. All right, get some rest. Don’t overwork, eat well, take good care of yourself."
"Mm, I will. You take care of your health too."
As the call ended, Natalie got up and walked to the window, wanting some air.
Looking down from there, she saw a familiar car parked below, and someone leaning next to it.
She looked for two seconds, then shut the window, went back to the bed, and turned off the light.
Downstairs.
Isaac looked up as the light in that window went out.
He exhaled a smoke ring, and for a moment, his heart and lungs both ached.
