Chapter 105: The First Shelter Defence

The rain was pouring fiercely just like it had done for several days now, only that this time, the rain came with something truly ominous.

All around Ark, people were running from place to place, trying to get to their posts as fast as possible. The civilians were running into their homes while the military officials were running towards the walls, their guns in hand.

Ark watched the area in front of him with a reserved expression and turned to stare at the girl beside him. Faye was staring at the walls with a strange expression on her face.

It wasn’t exactly a look of fear, more like nervous anticipation.

This would be their first defence after all, everyone was nervous. She had insisted on escorting Emma and him out of the building before returning back to the apartment and as such, here they were.

"Lock yourself in our place, don’t come out unless you are sure it is us, understood?"

Faye nodded. "Stay safe, both of you." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

She turned around and jogged back into the building.

His investigation into the happenings within the shelter grew stranger each day, up to the point that Ark was no longer sure the place was entirely safe.

Protecting Faye was their primary assignment, so Ark had to keep her safe, but at the same time, he could not take her to the wall leaving this as their best option.

If anything happened she could always call Emma and they would be there in minutes.

"Ready?"

Beside him, Emma nodded and summoned her large longbow.

"Let’s go!"

They arrived at the top of the walls shortly after. The ground was slick with water, making the floor slippery, thankfully, there was a tall barricade preventing everyone from accidentally slipping down to their doom.

Multiple other soldiers had already arrived and were staring forward, shocked expressions on their faces.

Ark peered down at the approaching mass as well. He could see them in the distance, multiple black objects swiftly moving towards them.

Even from here they could hear the sounds of their multiple bodies, shuffling against the ground as well as each other.

They are like a swarm of ants...

"What are those things?"

"They are spiders..." someone said from their side.

Ark turned to see Damien walk up to him, his wife not too far behind.

"Disgusting right? Who would have known our first encounter would be so creepy? Pon very much intended."

Emma chuckled at the stale joke but Ark remained silent.

Damian scratched the back of his neck before addressing him. "You’ve been scarce these past days, Ark."

Ark shrugged.

"Let’s just say I was a little occupied Damian."

His wife’s features changed slightly at the sound of Ark calling his name without the appropriate honorifics.

Emma laughed at his response.

"Occupied with listening to ghost tales from an eight year old kid."

"Hey!" Ark began. "He is an excellent source of information, you just don’t know because you’ve never met him."

She smiled. "Sure sure, everyone needs a way to get rid of stress, even if it’s something as obnoxious as ghosts."

Damian smiled and dug his hand into his pocket, procuring a cigarette. He placed the stick between his lips but did not ignite the flame, instead he stared at the beasts in front of them.

Emma lifted her bow.

"It looks like they are close enough for me."

Ark frowned slightly, "What do you mean, they are over five hundred meters away—"

Whoosh!

The walls shuddered as a wave of air washed past them, Emma’s arrow whistled through the rainy sky ablaze with an unquenchable flame.

Seconds later, it collided with the first horde of spiders, creating a large explosion that brightened up the environment.

Even from there they could hear the loud screeches that came from the incinerating spiders.

Damian whistled as he watched the carnage while Ark glanced at the blind girl.

"You’re quite something."

Emma smiled as she cocked another arrow. "Yeah, I get that a lot."

The second arrow whistled through the air, like a missile it accelerated right at the beasts only to bring a wave of destruction a second later.

While Emma unleashed the destructive power of her curse on the beasts, Damian asked:

"The ghost, you think it might be connected to the broken wall?"

Ark nodded.

"There is a slight chance it might, but it still doesn’t make sense."

Damian spat the cigarette that was now soaked by the rain out of his mouth, watching as the white object fell down the wall.

"I’ll look into it as well, we’ll share our observations?"

"Sounds like a plan."

Damian then picked up a large rifle from her floor, pointing it over the edge of the wall.

There was a question Ark had ever since he discovered that the man was a curse bearer.

Not to be hypocritical, but if he truly was one, why did he need a gun?

"Damian, you’re a curse bearer right? Why do you need a gun?"

The man smirked and put his eyes to his scope.

"It’s better seen than told."

The spiders were now less than two hundred meters from the shelter, each one racing forward like a wave of darkness.

Damian pointed the rifle at them, but in the last minute, he turned the weapon to the side, and fired, sending the bullet in the opposite direction.

’This guy... is he really that terrible of a shot?"

Just when Ark thought it was over, he suddenly saw the orange glow change direction and cut right into the wave of spiders in front of the horde.

Damian smiled, "You see, my curse is connected to guns. One would say I was built for this job."

Ark furrowed his brows, his surprise evident. It was the first time he was seeing anyone who could manipulate bullets as their curse.

It was not something he expected, since it seemed so... modern.

Damian stood up, the rifle still in hand and stared at the beasts, Ark was watching them too, his fingers tingling with anticipation.

They were now so close that he could finally see them well enough.

Their Black spider-like bodies moved in an unnatural manner, the multiple red eyes that crowned their heads starred in all directions and the sharp metal-like needles surrounding their bodies clicked together with each step they took.

The top of the wall was flooded with tons of soldiers, each one pointing their rifle at the approaching horde.

A cold wind rattled their clothes and the rain intensified as though to make the situation even more nerve racking than it already was.

The torrents slowly lowered their barrels downward and began to rotate slightly.

Damian kept his hand high up in the air, keeping the soldiers in check.

Only Emma was still decimating the beasts, taking out multiple with each strike.

After what seemed like an eternity, Damian finally lowered his hand. "Fire!"

The soldiers brought down hell.
