Chapter 74: Apocalyptic Descent (1)

The ominous dark line spanned about twelve meters in length and then in the next moment, the line parted, like a dreadful eye.

Black tendrils shout out in all directions, clinging to the road like disgusting roots, slowly pulsing with each passing second.

Everyone watched the scene with reserved expressions, waiting for the moment the calamity would descend.

Ark pulled his gun forward, causing his axe to dissipate, he brought the scope up, placing the butt of the weapon on his shoulder and peeping through the scope.

His fingers were hovering just above the trigger.

Scrreeech!

A black cloud tore through the portal and flew high up into the air. At first, it looked like smoke but on close observation, they realized that it was actually hundreds of bat-like creatures.

Ark apiece sourced information about them from his console and their names came to his mind instantly.

Bat devils...

This was one of the useful features of the Archive, thankfully the console had the same feature.

Another monster emerged from the gate as well, taking leisurely steps forward. They were unnaturally tall, each one more than eight feet in height, and although they were humanoid, their movements were strange... like trees shaking in the wind.

Their arms were just as unnaturally long and fell at their sides, with wicked claws that scraped the floor as they moved.

Silver claw masquerades.

Following these beasts was another nasty set, creatures made entirely out of bone held together by a strange liquid that Looked oddly like coagulated blood.

Undead minions.

And finally, large serpents the size of two grown men with multiple serrated teeth emerged. They could stand on their bellies like cobras and moved at jaw dropping speeds far too fast for the average human.

Ark brought his scope down and stared at the mass.

"It’s like they unleashed hell’s arsenal..."

He said, as he watched them slowly approaching their battlement.

Kiera stared at the horde, her expression neutral.

"This is just the first wave."

A shadowy figure then descended upon their battlement, causing the soldiers to shrink in fear up until they realized it was Thalia.

Thalia was no longer in her regular military clothing, instead, she had switched into something more appropriate for battle, an armour that caught the eye of everyone who happened to glance back.

It was ruby red, the colour of her eyes and made up of a scale-like material that gracefully curved around her body, outlining her profound shape.

It was distracting... Some of the soldiers on the battlement had already fixed their gaze on her, momentarily forgetting that their very lives were at risk.

In Thalia’s hands was something Ark had not expected to see, a long Scythe, bearing an ox-blood coloured blade.

The scythe rested on her shoulders, its sharp tip curving towards her back. Her blonde hair was billowing in the wind as she stared down below, watching the horde.

"Tch, quite a rough bunch we have. Most of them are just about to hit the profane rank..."

She then lifted her hands into the air.

"Hold your fire!" She screamed at the top of her voice.

"Ready!" There was the simultaneous sound of cocking guns, even Ark pointed his rifle forward.

Emma’s bow was already fully outstretched, pointing down at the apocalypse beasts.

Thalia’s hand remained in the air as she waited for them to enter their effective range.

In those moments, the tension in the air was so palpable that it was as though it weighed upon their minds like heavy weights.

Everyone had one simple question in their minds.

Would we survive?

The tension continued to brew the closer they got, the snakes were ahead of the rowdy group, speeding their way toward them like bullet trains.

Those holding riot shields in front were already tingling, no doubt shaking with fear.

But Ark had to respect their discipline, no one shot a single bullet, no one moved an inch. They all waited until.

"Bingo." A smile curled on her lips. "Fire!"

Boom!

A loud thunderous sound exploded from the battlement as the torrents came to life. The astute weapons were literally breathing fire as heavy, flesh shattering rounds were pouring on the creatures below.

The sound of the rifles added a calamitous tune to the already obstinate symphony, turning the area into a mad house.

There was the sound of clattering lead, the sound of screaming soldiers and the sound of reloading guns.

The wave of beasts was met with the full wrath of humanity’s military might.

Somewhere by the side, a soldier lifted a small short range shell and loaded it into a heavy artillery mortar.

Boom!

The shell was launched right at a wave of approaching masquerades, completely decimating everything in the area.

One of the torrents aimed at the sky where the devil bats are descending from, trying to mask their attacks with darkness of the clouds.

The weapon roared to life, shredding into their formation, but it was not enough.

One tourent could only do so much and so there were still many devil bats left, seconds away from descending upon them.

Ark lifted his rifle, aiming at the bats.

His scope locked on their progression and he squeezed the trigger, unleashing hell. Little by little the bats were being decimated.

But then, something happened—

The bats came together, taking the form of a large triangle, their bodies pressed together, a strange darkness covered their form and soon the bullets simply bounced harmlessly off their sides.

Ark cursed as he brought the weapon down, pulling out his dagger from its sheath.

Meanwhile...

Emma was unleashing arrow upon arrow, causing a wave of decimation incomparable to whatever the human forces could do.

All around, the apocalypse beasts were getting cut down, and yet more and more kept emerging from the gate.

Sweat dripped down her face as she unleashed another arrow, decimating a rather tall apocalypse beast.

That was when she sensed something, a wave of multiple vibrations approaching from the sky.

Emma lifted her head to face the horde, releasing a wave of vibrations herself, and soon she got a clear shape of the beasts as well as their line of approach.

She lifted her longbow, pointing high up into the air. The longbow took a good amount of strength to draw and so her muscles flexed as she dragged the bow string to its full length.

"Fire." Emma whispered to the bow, her words more of a spiritual command than a physical one.

Suddenly, the arrow was engulfed in bright red flames that curled around her fingers.

Whoooosh!

The single red arrow streamed through the air, speeding straight at the infernal bats, and once it made contact—

The bats exploded completely engulfed by the raging flames, their dead bodies descended from the sky like a scene from a duck hunting expedition.

Emma knocked another arrow and let it loose.
