Chapter 97: Structural issues, Resisting Temptation

Two small military vehicles with open roofs pulled up in front of the building and they all got in, the vehicle speeding forward immediately they did.

They sped past a couple of military officials as well as civilians before arriving at a remote part of the shelter.

Before they got out, Ark turned to the girls.

"Stay close to Emma at all times."

They didn’t even need to leave the car to see the problem. Right on the wall was a large hole that cut right through the wall, exposing the area outside.

A massive security breach...

Luckily for them, they had discovered it before any horde of beasts approached the shelter.

Ark hopped out of the vehicle along with Damian and the others and moved toward the hole to take a better look.

This was no ordinary wall... it was large enough that the top of the walls were often used at battlement during waves of attack, meaning it was rather wide.

So wide that it would have taken days for an apocalypse beast to tear through the wall. How was it possible that they did not notice it all through that time?

And where was the beast right now?

"Any signs of an apocalypse beast?"

The man gave Ark a strange look and didn’t speak, instead he turned to Damian who cocked a brow as though to ask him, "what are you doing?"

That was when he finally spoke.

"All we found was the hole sir." He said, regarding Damian. "There was only the hole by the time we got here."

Ark walked over to the hole and stood within it, observing the scope of the damage.

There were no signs of claw marks, meaning it was not a mole-like creature. Whatever did this seemed to have just avulsed the entire patch of the wall at once.

Nothing was natural about it.

Emma did not immediately walk forward, still playing her game, she took careful steps until she was right next to the hole.

Then she glanced back slightly, not exactly meeting the face of the commander.

"How regular are the patrols?"

Once again the former commander gave that same look, a look that was slowly looking like one of disdain... or was it disgust.

"Soldier, do we have a problem?" Damian asked, his voice taking a dangerous tone.

The man laughed nervously.

"No, of course not sir."

Damian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Why aren’t you speaking then?"

The man looked slightly confused.

"Sorry, I don’t think I understand what you mean?"

Boom!

Damian suddenly pointed his finger at the man and an orange streak of light short forward, knocking the man’s hat off his head in an instant.

The man trembled slightly.

"I w-was just taking s-sometime to consider her qquestion sir!"

The man then quickly turned to Emma.

"The patrols are done every single da—"

"Get out." Lauretta said, her voice taking an icy tone.

The man panicked and quickly walked away, leaving their group behind.

Lauretta’s mood suddenly lightened as she dusted Damian’s clothes.

"Don’t bother yourself with people like that dear, they bring out the worse in you."

There was a moment of awkward silence.

Something was definitely going on with the local garrison considering the man’s attitude but Ark was used to being treated like that for sometime now.

He was unsure of the cause though, was it because they were young? Or had the comander somehow found out that he was from the slums?

Still, what interested him more was the couple in front of him.

’So they are... an item?’

Ark stared at them unsure of what to say. He had no idea Damian was a curse bearer up till this point, that meant he was not just his advisor, but also one of the seven military curse bearers.

What about Lauretta? Was she one of them? She definitely had that edge curse bearers had.

Damian sighed and turned to face them.

"Sorry about that, they might not like that kids are now their commanders but rules are rules and there is a certain order of things that keeps the military functioning."

Ark stared at him blankly.

"I’m not a kid, the only child we have among us is Faye."

"Hey!" Faye protested from behind them while Damian smiled.

"Sure, forgive my mistake, you aren’t kids."

He walked over to the wall and bent down to observe the wall.

"I’ll make sure he is adequately punished later. But before that..."

He pointed to the rocks at the side of the wall where they stood and then to the rocks at the other side.

Ark immediately noticed what he was getting at.

"There is more debri on the outside..."

Damian nodded and stood up. The implication of what they had discovered was rather concerning.

Faye watched them with a confused expression. It seemed everyone except her and her friends had realized what had happened.

Then it finally occurred to her, her breath hitched at the realization.

"The wall... it was destroyed from within the facility."

***

Ark was in a pretty modern room with baby blue walls and a low hanging chandelier, bathing the room in a yellow light.

In the center of the room, placed against the wall, was a large king sized bed draped in a nice soft cotton material.

Standing by the edge of the bed, Emma took off her shirt, revealing a white silk undershirt, while Ark watched her with a slightly annoyed expression.

"Care to explain what you are doing?"

They had finally been given an apartment to stay in, one that had three bedrooms, a small living room as well as a kitchen.

It was located very close to Damian’s apartment in case they needed to meet for something urgent.

Ark stared at the girl in front of him with furrowed brows. Her blonde hair gleamed softly underneath the yellow light and her green eyes sparkled with mischief as she watched him.

Emma smiled.

"Care to explain what is in that bag?"

Ark glanced at the backpack in his hand but said nothing, then Emma continued:

"Well, I’m going to take a shower. The day was filled with so much activity after all."

He signed, watching as she walked over to her bed and picked up her towel.

"Why were you clinging to me today?"

She paused, and for a moment she had a genuine look of confusion on her face.

"Have you considered that maybe it’s because I’m blind?"

Her lie was so low effort, that it wasn’t even impressive.

"Is that really what you are going with?"

Emma did not respond, instead, she held onto the hem of her shirt and began pulling it off.

Already, she had exposed the flawless skin of her belly and bits of her slender waist, the shirt teetering towards her generous bosom.

Ark’s face took a nasty shade of red, he could already feel his heart beginning to race and yet he refused to be flustered by her antics.

But still—

’What the hell is she doing?!"

Emma then paused halfway.

"Really, you’re not even going to look away? How lecherous."

Ark placed his face in his palm, his voice rising slightly.

"Says the girl undressing in front of a boy!"

Emma laughed heartily and pulled her shirt back down.

"Well if you really want to know, I’m acting, but for a good reason."

She sat down on the edge of her bed and stared towards the ceiling.

"You see... Something is wrong with this place."
