Chapter 98: Whispers in the Dark

There was a thick uncomfortable scent of dust within a dark room, combined with the scent of ash that has been present since the start of the apocalypse, it was a rather unpleasant smell.

But that was not the only annoying thing about the space, a light unpleasant smell of worn out lubricating oil was also hanging in the air.

Tick!

The shadow of a long clock hand washed over them, the sharp sound reverberating around the room.

A girl sighed staring up.

Sitting above multiple gears were several figures in long cloaks. The material was dark, so dark that it was difficult to spot in the ever-present darkness, and embroidered along the seams of the cloak was a shiny golden pattern.

The material felt soft and confronting no matter the season or time, she would know... after all, she was wearing one of these cloaks as well.

Tick!

The girl let out a sigh, her bright pink hair peeking from underneath the cloak.

"The clock house? Really? Why such an ominous location?"

Step

Red streaks of light were filtering into the room, landing on a spot not too far from her.

Step!

Something was moving within the darkness, something tall and humanoid but at the same time twisted and shrewd.

Step!

The footsteps got closer, up to the point where each step left a reverberating ring in her head.

Step!

The girl was not afraid, she was a rather capable individual, someone many curse bearers couldn’t hope to defeat in a one on one confrontation.

What was there to fear?

Step?

Finally, the figure was revealed but this time she did not hear its footsteps, she only saw it move, move right underneath the red light reflected by the moon.

The girl took an involuntary step back, her breathing shook slightly and her eyes were wide in horror underneath the cloak.

Yet she spoke not a single word, because in this world weakness simply meant death.

The figure turned to stare at her, it was eyeless and yet she could tell it was looking right at her, as though peering into the very makeup of her soul.

The beast was twisted, its form was human enough and yet it was different. Dark misshapen horns were sticking out of its skull, waving as though they were not solid.

It was without eyes but on its body, or rather all around its body were multiple white markings.

The marks of curse bearers—

Hundreds of them were etched upon its skin, pulsing slightly with each passing second.

A hundred deaths

This time the girl couldn’t help but stumble back, falling to her butt.

That voice... it had been in her head.

A twisted and unearthly voice that pulled at her heart, as though it spoke directly into her soul.

And that gaze—

Her fingers began to tremble.

The beast was still staring right at her, or rather right at her innermost self. The part of her that was vulnerable and weak.

Scared? Scared...

It was as though the walls were speaking to her, the voice bouncing against all the walls before reaching her in their horrifying symphony.

It elicited some sort of primal fear from the depths of her being, she felt like screaming but instead uttered one single name.

"S-Silas!"

A sharp wind blew against her, pulling her hood off and revealing a beautiful girl with bright pink eyes and hair.

Currently, her eyes were closed and she was trembling softly, a slight tremble that went unnoticed by everyone.

Save for another figure, the one that stood at the highest point of the clock house.

"Enough!"

Suddenly the entire sensation dropped and the girl felt all her fears were washed away in an instant leaving her cold and frightened.

The creature turned away, staring at the crimson moon instead, as though it had been frozen in time.

She sucked in a sharp breath.

It was as though there was a void where her chest was, an all encompassing cold that played with her heart.

And yet she did not show it, she placed her hood back on and rose to her feet.

"What is the meaning of this?" Her voice was calm and composed, lacking the fear that had once riddled it.

Clap Clap

Soft claps began to emanate from the side of the room as another figure walked into the light. He was tall, gargantuan at eight feet in height.

Beside him was a slightly smaller figure shrouded in a dark cloak, not a single part of their body was revealed from underneath the many layers.

But she could tell, they had a slender figure.

The clapping finally stopped and the man glanced at all of them in the room.

"Wonderful isn’t it?" His voice was gruff, as though not adapted to speaking the language well.

"I have to say girl... you outdid yourself. A simple glare is more than enough to kill a man."

He motioned at the beast. "And yet, it is incomplete..."

There was a scoff from somewhere up above, one of the cloaked figures peered down at the man and spoke, his voice brimming with contempt.

"Power is meant to be harnessed through hard work and dedication. Your feeble scientific construct will fail you when the time comes."

The man gave no response, instead, the beast turned to face the boy, a mental command given by its master.

After a moment of silence, nothing happened.

Its mental attack had been inefficient.

Everyone could tell that the man was offended, angry even. But it was what he did next that solidified that fact.

The beast redirected its gaze and once more it stared at the girl.

She knows your name...

She tried to rein it in but soon her fingers began to tremble at her sides.

The sound of rushing air filled the space, followed by a sharp whistle just as a figure descended from above, landing right between the girl and the beast.

The young man took a step forward and walked right to the beast up until he was face to face with the monster.

And yet he did not flinch.

He took off his cloak, revealing stark white hair and orange eyes.

He was smiling, right at the beast.

The colossal man scoffed and turned away.

"You know what to do..."

His voice began to fade as he stepped into the darkness.

"Bring her to me..."
