Chapter 31: Jaws of Ophidia

Damion woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. The System popped up with a notification, and when he checked it out, he saw that it was his Daily Quest. He clicked on it, and the completion requirements were listed in his view.

Feeling energetic, he jumped out of bed and cleaned himself up. He rummaged through the box he kept his clothes in, but found out he was practically out of shirts.

He cursed inwardly and moved over to Toby’s stuff, and without even thinking twice, he began to search, pulling out several T-shirts and throwing them aside.

It took a minute, but he eventually found what he was searching for.

"You once took my MCU when you lost yours in a fight, so I’m only returning the favor," Damion uttered subconsciously.

He turned around, walking back to his own side of the room. Toby was still missing, but he didn’t care. He glanced at the clothes scattered on the floor and shrugged. "He deserves worse."

Damion proceeded to put on the MCU, keeping the jacket aside and donning the rest. It fit nicely, mostly because of the extremely stretchy material used to make them.

In the process of putting on the boots, Damion caught sight of something in a corner of Toby’s side of the room. He quickly put his feet in the boots and used the magnetic Velcro-like strap to fasten them. Then with a swift motion, he walked across the room for the third time that day and squatted.

"Hmm... what’s this?" Damion muttered as he picked up the metal object laying on the floor. He walked to the window and began to scrutinize the object thoroughly.

From one angle it looked like a guard or pauldron, and from another, it resembled a mask. Its black surface was smooth with sharp edges, and in some places, faintly glowing dark green weird hieroglyphs could be seen.

"Let’s say it’s a mask, aren’t facemasks banned in the school?" Damion asked. "And if it’s an armor piece, why keep it here?"

Damion stared deeply at the object, hoping for its information to pop up and tell him about it, but he got nothing. This baffled Damion because this was a first.

He raised it to his shoulder and placed it there, however, there was no reaction whatsoever. He took it off and raised it up again to continue his scrutiny.

In that moment though, the ray of sunlight reflected in a peculiar way, and Damion glimpsed a snake like image etched on its surface.

Damion’s eyes narrowed as he felt the sword in his storage react, and he pulled it out. He raised an eyebrow in surprise, before his eyes suddenly widened, and he dropped the sword to the ground.

Damion swiftly caught the sword before it reached the ground, his shock still evident in his expression.

He let go of the object, and the screen in his vision changed.

"How?" Damion asked dumbfoundedly. Just holding onto the sword had boosted it by a whole Rank. Damion could literally feel the energy coursing through him and filling him with raw untapped power.

Damion felt some information trickle into his mind, and he focused on it. The Blessing of Knowledge seemed to be working at that moment, and with each moment that he waded through the new information, his face turned darker.

Damion delved deeper into the new information, dissecting and understanding it, before opening his eyes.

"Jaws of Ophidia... a piece of armor created by the Serpent God himself, having great affinity for Poison and the Ability to move any weapon or armor up a Rank unfailingly,"

"...who’s the Serpent God though?" Damion asked, a little pissed. The information he had received was incomplete, leaving him almost fraught with angst.

He was only told of the item’s name and origins, but he wasn’t told anything else, and what made him truly vexed was that feeling of doom that came upon him when he held the object. He was sure the feeling was related to the item, but how would he know what to do if he wasn’t told anything?

Damion gritted his teeth, suppressing the urge to shout and let out his frustration.

"Something this valuable can’t be left aside just because of the feeling I’m getting," Damion contemplated. "It makes me wonder though, how did this get into Toby’s hands?"

That question made Damion think for a long time, but when he failed to form any tangible idea or reason, he gave up and returned his attention to the Jaws of Ophidia.

"Jaws... that means it’s meant for the face, just like I speculated." Damion deduced brilliantly. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

He picked the mask again and raised it to eye level. The feeling of doom evolved into something bigger, something more sinister, and Damion began to dread putting on the mask.

He lowered his hand, cold sweat matting his back and drenching his clothing. Just a few seconds of experiencing that feeling had taken a toll on him, regardless, it only made his resolve get stronger.

Damion raised his hand again, this time using all his will power in tandem with Dragon’s Authority to force his arm to his face.

He felt an invisible pressure crash on him, and his body became heavier. His arms seemed to freeze in place, and veins raced across his body and he pushed back with equal force.

His eyes turned bloodshot and even a vein burst, causing tears of blood to pour down his eyes.

His hand inched closer to his face, and the green hieroglyphs on the mask lit up, but under the pressure of Dragon’s Authority and the other opposing pressure, the hieroglyphs slowly flickered, shattering into motes of light as new purple runes replaced them.

A stream of light particles came from the mask and Damion’s face, and slowly, it began to pull too, drawing the mask and Damion’s face closer.

Damion’s eyes rolled, threatening to recede to the back of his eyes and make him collapse, but he persevered.

Time flew by slowly, and it almost seemed like he was going to fail in the end as he dropped to his knees, and fell face first.

Alas, falling only gave him the last push he needed, and the mask clasped his face, clicking in place.

In the next second, a bright Purple and Green light enveloped the room, and a tornado of fierce energy kicked up...
