Ensnaring his Dark Moon-Chapter 329: Tales
But an upset father-in-law would end up giving him endless pain every other day. Especially when the said father-in-law was an ancient god who was far more powerful than him.
If he insisted on taking his daughter away, then Aleister could only offer his life as a tribute to coax him. But with his life lost, he would not be able to stay with Esme, and separating from her was not even a question to him.
So, he had to consider a lot of things.
Esme glared at him before turning her face away.
Aleister’s lips twitched slightly. He felt rather... indignant.
The scene was witnessed by Cardan who smoothened the goosebumps on his arms. Even he did not see this coming.
He rather pitied his elder brother for having a father-in-law like that.
Unlike him, Aleister did not get so lucky with it. He could not even break his limbs.
"What... What did you say?’’ Jeremiah looked at Elder Hall in disbelief.
Some of the words that the man said got through his mind and there was a vague guess forming in his heart but it was so bizarre that he could not bring himself to even put a finger on it.
Elder Hall glanced at the King, seeking the man’s permission through his gaze.
Rezeph picked up his wine glass and continued sipping from it calmly.
That gave Elder Hall the courage to open his mouth to speak.
’’Our God was a part of the heaven. If not for the schemes of the witch clan, he would not have ended up falling from his throne but if that did not happen, ungrateful mers like you would not have come to exist today. Have you never wondered why generation after generation, every King’s name originated from the name of our God? Have you never wondered what happened to the immortal true god who disappeared mysteriously after giving rise to this lineage?"
Elder Hall’s words sent Jeremiah in waves of shock. He had wondered. How could he not? He had always wondered about these questions, only for him to realize that certain questions had no answers.
’’How are these things related?" Jeremiah backed towards the pillar and held it tightly as he climbed to his feet, almost staggering and losing balance while doing so. He looked at Rezeph before looking back at Elder Hall, ’’What are you trying to say?"
’’On what merits do you think were you chosen to become the heir apparent? Do you think your novelty or strength outshined the other candidates?"
’’...What...?" Jeremiah looked at the man in disbelief.
He had always believed he had fought to make his way to where he was today. Then why did Elder Hall seem to be insinuating otherwise? He shook his head in denial.
Elder Hall sneered as he opened his mouth to speak, opening the tales that had been buried under the sea for centuries.
Centuries ago, God Zephyr had created a mermaid and married her to carry the lineage of mers. During that time, there was not a day that the mers were able to live in peace due to the wrath of the gods and small clans of heavens that deemed Zephyr as a betrayer and chastised him for forsaking heaven and letting a new clan emerge.
In the eyes of heaven back then, the tribe of mers were nothing but monsters. Neither were they humans or gods nor were they sea creatures entirely.
Some of the heavenly gods and clans saw it as a threat to them. What threatened them more was God Zephyr’s boundless powers that guarded the sea creatures closely, not letting anyone touch a strand of their hair.
After the queen passed away, God Zephyr decided to step back into the shadows.
Back then, most mers were not intelligent creatures and they were not capable enough to sit on the throne.
A few of them had awakened their intelligence out of which some were morally corrupted. Such people were invited to the sea court under the guise of being appointed as the heir apparent. The innocent people were repudiated skillfully while the evil ones became the chosen ones.
They were beheaded and sometimes tortured to death depending on the severity of their sins while God Zephyr then took their face and identity.
Once the heir apparent became the King, there was a ritual for his name to be changed for him to be named after the God as Zephyr refused to carry anything other than the faces of those sinners.
In the eyes of the ordinary subjects, the chosen heir apparent became the King of Defire after the death, or in the eyes of some people, the disappearance, of their God and hence, he was named after God Zephyr.
But what they were never aware of was that no one can harm a true god other than other gods themselves.
God Zephyr was there all along, looking over his people who were living in delusions while ensuring their safety and getting rid of evil after every century to give the subjects a new ruler.
Ruthless his actions were, the more decisive he was. God Zephyr might have been the most mischievous and witty god in the heavens but with the responsibility of a race on his shoulders, he learned to hide his motives behind his facade even better.
The man was more cunning, sharper, and crueler.
When Jeremiah was handpicked as the heir apparent, he was a child. The King had already traced the black magic around him but he was impressed by the child’s determination hence he wanted to groom him and see if he ever changed his motives and learned to walk on the right path.
If Jeremiah became a strong mer without any evil intentions, Rezeph had no intentions to harm him or hold him there.
But years after years passed, and Jeremiah grew up to become more sinister. Not only that, he learned to hide his real motives behind the facade of his gentle face.
"No!!!!’’ Jeremiah’s piercing scream reverberated in the throne room, ’’No!" He covered his ears.
