Chapter 56: Bonding again

They talked along the way. The walk was windless, not even a shade of it blowing in their direction.

"Wouldn’t take us that long to find some monsters, right?" Axel asked his dad.

The man smiled. "Yes, this is the time some go on hunting," he said.

Axel nodded, and they continued to walk forward.

Back in the realm plunger, when he had mentioned his dad, no one had been surprised. They were actually expecting it. They were expecting him to choose his dad, and to him, that was the best decision.

Forget the beating from his father. Well, that brought him to Axel. Moreover, his dad had even paid back for his deeds by healing them and now embarking on a quite dangerous mission.

Axel occasionally looked at his father, a smile forming on his lips when he did so, at times.

He couldn’t quite believe it. He was with his father again. He had cried and thought that he was gone, but no. Happiness proved pungent, and now he was walking with him again. Well, at least with the ragged and rough-looking version of his father.

"So what’s your superpower?" his father asked him, deciding to break the silence that hung in the air.

Axel looked at the grey, seemingly smoke-like cloud and said, "Um. It’s quite a few, you know. I can shoot fireballs from my hands, light my body with flames, which I can make flicker and make bigger."

Axel’s father was nodding his head in the affirmative, looking impressed already.

"I can fly, have a super punch, and a hell of other stuff in my inventory too."

Axel’s dad ruffled Axel’s hair, making him giggle.

"Tell me, son, I’d love to know."

Axel laughed. "Alright, so um, I have a very dope sword, named the Inferno Sword, very good stuff, really. It can do unbelievable slashes and rip enemies apart, but it’s not that epic against big enemies. You’d easily break it."

Axel’s dad smiled. "You talk like it’s thaumaturgy."

Axel waved his hands. "You’re damn strong. With all of us against you, you were still impossible to beat. If I wasn’t your son, I would’ve been killed." He accompanied that with a laugh.

But Axel’s dad wasn’t laughing. He made a sad face and looked downwards. Then, he stopped, holding Axel by the shoulder and looked him in the eyes.

"I apologize for what I did back then. I know it wasn’t fatherly, and I might have failed my duty as a father. But note, I was performing my duty as a father. I got sort of mentally unstable, unhinged, and so the only thing that could free me was to see you. To see your face, to see that you’re alive."

Axel sniffled now, tears welling up in his eyes.

"I know you’ll never hurt me on purpose, Dad."

They embraced in a hug, and coming out of it, Axel said with a smile, "I’m sure Mom will be proud of us wherever she is. That her husband and her son both have superpowers."

His dad laughed, and then they tried to avoid another sad moment. Sad because their ’mum’ and ’wife’ were dead. Axel changed the topic now.

"So what are your superpowers? Monster stuff?"

Axel’s dad smiled and looked around the place now. He wasn’t doing so because he perceived any danger, but just out of instinct.

He seemed to be familiar with this place. In front of them were rocks, tall ones. Ones that stood as walls, looking slender.

They lined straight ahead, and Axel wondered if it was safe to tread its path, which his dad affirmed by walking graciously through. Axel followed.

The ground here was parched and dry, and the rock-made walls looked like something that could fall down any second now.

"I can change to any monster of choice," Axel’s father said. "I find the powers mythical and very supernatural. It’s a really good power, as it makes me near-immortal, but it has a flaw, which is why it’s limited. I can only change into monsters I know and wish for, not just any monster. So, if there’s some heaven-defying power monster that, with just a single flick of its fingers, can erase the universe and I don’t know about it, then I can’t change into it. So you see, it’s weird."

Axel was exhilarated. "Any monster? Man, you’re goated!"

A loud growl disrupted everything.

Facing them was a towering monster of obsidian and molten veins, with fiery cracks glowing across its body. It had massive claws, and its face was a shadowed void with burning red eyes.

"Shit!" Axel and his dad said in unison.

It moved forward towards them, and as it did so, the ground trembled.

Axel quickly squinted his eyes to scan what type of monster it was.

Axel sighed and said to his father softly, "Damn, this is a second-rank Monsyeran monster, the second most powerful."

Axel’s dad stepped forward and clenched his fists while tilting his head sideways.

The monster roared, and as it did so, drops of lava fell out of its mouth.

It was heading their way now.

"I should turn to it, right? I should turn to an abyssborn?" Axel thought for just a split second, as there was no time to do that.

"But that would give you a fifty percent chance against it as you guys are even," he said.

"What about you by my side?" his father protested. "That should boost our advantage."

Axel suddenly smiled and said, "Why not go one rank higher, above him? Why don’t you turn into an abyssalyt?"
