Chapter 173: Chapter 173: Cannot Say

The twists of fate in this world are like a malicious joke played by the gods, exposing this secret in the ugliest way possible.

You can’t blame Iris Harris for being foolish, because even she kept it from her.

How could that child, who trusted her so much, ever believe that she would conceal such a huge secret?

Lady Hyde spoke intermittently, her sobs choking her words until she could speak no more.

No amount of regret, no amount of apologies, could undo anything now.

At this point, even she didn’t know how it would all end in the future.

Iris Harris was gravely ill, so close to death’s door. She had wanted countless times to confess this secret to her. But now, how could she say it?

She was truly afraid, afraid that once she spoke, Iris Harris would die. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

How could she tell her that the person she waited ten years for was no longer in this world?

She couldn’t say it.

She absolutely couldn’t say it.

After an indeterminate time, Brandan slowly raised his hand to place it on Lady Hyde’s shoulder. Lady Hyde looked up at him, "Brandan?"

"It’s not your fault. Don’t cry."

He lowered his eyes and softly said, "It’s my fault."

"Brandan..."

"Actually, I’ve liked her for a long time." He smiled weakly. Perhaps only at times like this does a person reveal their true feelings, "I just refused to admit it. Ending up like this is really my own fault. I originally had a chance to be with her forever, I originally had a chance to be her ’Brandan,’ as long as I had treated her a bit better, we could have been happy together."

Lady Hyde’s secret was meant to be an eternal secret; Iris Harris would never know that Caleb Hyde could never return again. She would always stay by his side, thinking of him as that person.

Everything had been destroyed by his own hands.

The happiness within reach was collapsed by his own doing.

For her to completely give up on him, how desperate must she have been to abandon the ten-year promise and face death alone?

He couldn’t fathom, could not feel even a fraction of the pain she had endured.

Brandan closed his eyes lightly and said to Lady Hyde, "Since things have come to this, don’t tell her about it. She’s too ill now to handle it."

"I know, I know..." Lady Hyde sobbed quietly, "I was afraid to say it before; now, I cannot say it."

Brandan nodded, then raised his hand to remove the needle, lifted the blanket, and sat up from the bed.

"Brandan?"

Lady Hyde was startled by his actions, "Where are you going?"

"I’m going to see her."

Brandan softly said, got out of bed, and walked towards the door.

**************************

Iris Harris was still in the intensive care unit.

Although she was out of life-threatening danger, her body was too weak, and her condition was still very dangerous, with a constant risk of complications.

Brandan stood in front of the glass window and looked inside. The breathing mask had already been removed, but she was still unconscious, looking extremely frail and pale. Her hair, like seaweed, lay slightly curled on her shoulders, making her face look even smaller, like she was just a child.

Her brows furrowed slightly, showing a hint of a crease, making it impossible not to want to reach out and smooth it out for her.

Perhaps the biggest mistake of her life was meeting him.

Brandan slowly withdrew his gaze. He felt a pang in his heart and turned around, leaning against the glass window, as he slowly exhaled a breath.
