Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 318: Undercurrents Surging
"Okay, got it."
Ethan Sterling listened to her rambling, but instead of being annoyed, he felt quite pleased. As he fastened the cufflinks on his sleeves, he walked over to Seraphina Redgrave and leaned down to give her lips a fierce kiss. "Remember to wait for me to come back for dinner tonight."
Seraphina’s hand rested on the bed, her lips red and slightly swollen, looking like a bullied little rabbit.
She escorted Ethan to the gate of the manor and stopped there, watching as he walked further away. She gazed at the road outside, still shrouded in mist, and was about to turn back when she heard Nanny Lynch’s laughter behind her.
She turned to see Nanny Lynch approaching with a smile, "I just remembered the early days between you and Young Master Sterling; you can’t bear to part with him now, can you?"
In the past, she wished Ethan would leave as soon as possible, but indeed, people change over time. With time grows affection, isn’t that how it is?
"There’s something off about Ethan."
Seraphina spoke earnestly, her face serious, unlike someone joking.
"Huh?"
Nanny Lynch did not quite understand. She had just seen Ethan leave with a cheerful expression and saw nothing amiss.
Seraphina turned and walked toward the house. Since they moved here, Ethan had been accompanying her to recuperate. Now, neither of them had fully recovered; why suddenly the need to go to the Group?
He claimed he was worried about losing control, which wasn’t entirely unreasonable. But just now on the bed, he suddenly wanted to do something but was turned down, and then he mentioned going to the financial syndicate with clothes surprisingly already prepared.
"Miss! Miss!"
Seraphina snapped back to reality and looked at Nanny Lynch, who curiously asked, "Miss, are you okay? What’s wrong with Young Master Sterling?"
"Specifically, I’m not sure how to explain it. Let’s just call it intuition."
Currently living in the manor, detached from the outside world, her mind had become dull.
As Seraphina and Nanny Lynch walked further inside, she asked, "What’s the situation outside now?"
"Hmm? What situation?"
Nanny Lynch didn’t understand.
"I mean, after they announced my death, has everything outside become peaceful?"
"And Selena Quinn’s whereabouts, has Special Assistant Ayers discovered anything? If she didn’t leave Sovereign by public transport, that means she has other motives to fulfill personally."
This was something she couldn’t figure out. Given Ethan’s power, how could two weeks go by without locating Selena Quinn?
Moreover, Selena Quinn had been pampered like a princess since childhood, and her health wasn’t great. It seemed unlikely she could escape without leaving a trace.
Or perhaps someone was helping her from behind?
It was unclear if her days had been too comfortable, but she was now belatedly realizing that Selena Quinn’s sudden disappearance might lead to very dire consequences.
This woman had never been easy to deal with.
Seraphina bit her lip and said, "Nanny Lynch, get me a computer with internet access. I want to look up something."
These days she had indeed been utterly isolated from the world, without inquiring about any outside news.
This was because she thought she was now living for Ethan. This life was given by him, so she lived according to his wishes.
However, not paying attention to external affairs did not mean that past grievances were written off.
"Yes."
Nanny Lynch replied.
Seraphina sat on the sofa with a laptop on her lap, her fingers typing deftly on the keyboard as she reviewed recent news from the past two weeks.
It turned out that Veridian Isle had not faded from people’s view due to her "death". Current news was frantically smearing Veridian Isle, saying its inhabitants were heinous and even claiming they wanted to overthrow Sovereign.
As Seraphina read these words, her fingers clenched into a fist.
Those financial syndicates were outraged because she had entered The Law Council, so they were doing their utmost to tarnish Veridian Isle’s reputation, nearly renaming it a "crime den".
After this, her power would find it hard to advance.
Perhaps it would be downright impossible to succeed.
As she perused these high-sounding news articles, she also searched for recent developments of the Sterling Group, finding its trajectory stable.
Could it be that her intuition was wrong? Could it be that Ethan simply wanted a breath of fresh air and didn’t have anything to hide from her?
"Miss."
Nanny Lynch entered the room and stood in front of Seraphina.
She looked up, and Nanny Lynch handed her a postcard, the same as before, still devoid of any writing, brought by Hector Shaw.
But this time Nanny Lynch added a remark, "Miss, the gentleman who sent the postcard wants to meet and talk with you."
"I won’t see him." Seraphina refused directly.
"His expression was quite unpleasant, and he said he had news you might want to hear," Nanny Lynch added.
"..."
Was he specifically here to deliver news?
After thinking for a moment, Seraphina put down her laptop and stood up to head outside.
Upon exiting the manor’s gates, Seraphina ventured into the depths of the forest, where a waterfall cascaded down, creating a spray of water and a chilly atmosphere.
Hector Shaw stood beside a strange rock, well-dressed though his complexion indeed didn’t look good.
"Why haven’t you left yet?"
Seraphina approached him.
Hector turned, his leg still slightly stiff, and upon seeing Seraphina’s slightly more relaxed expression than before, his own expression eased a bit before he grimly said, "I told you, I’m waiting for you to change your mind."
He was unwilling to let go.
"What news do you have for me?"
Seraphina asked, her final words swallowed by the noise of the waterfall.
"According to information relayed by my network, the situation in Sovereign is rather tense lately." Hector Shaw sobered his expression and began to discuss serious matters.
"What?" Seraphina’s expression suddenly changed abruptly. "Currently, my inquiries reveal that the Yu, Zhou, Gao, Shang, and Shen financial syndicates are sending their relatives abroad, while some old families that withdrew from the disputes long ago have left people behind in Sovereign."
Hector Shaw explained.
Seraphina slightly furrowed her brows, "In the past, to eliminate me, those old families sent people to Sovereign, perhaps they stayed a bit too long."
Though she said this, her expression grew increasingly somber, clearly not aligning with her thoughts.
Hector Shaw also noticed but didn’t voice his disagreement, continuing, "Don’t you find it strange? Ever since the announcement of your feigned death, Sovereign has been too peaceful—none of the syndicates questioned whether you were truly dead. Instead, recently, there have been signs of eavesdropping at The Sterling Manor."
The final statement caused Seraphina’s pupils to contract sharply, "The Sterling Manor?"
"Yes." Hector Shaw nodded, "I’m now concerned that news of you still being by Ethan’s side might have spread silently to the ears of every syndicate, and perhaps they are plotting something major."
