Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 95: She Is Just a Tool for Bearing Children
After dinner, Serena Yardley returned to her room.
Lying in bed, she tossed and turned, replaying every word Ethan Yardley had said to her.
She thought he made a lot of sense.
’But can you really force feelings? Can you just... settle?’
’I’m so conflicted.’
Late at night, Serena Yardley was still rolling around on the large bed, unable to fall asleep no matter how she tried.
She had no idea when the man had entered her room. It wasn’t until her head drifted toward the foot of the bed and she looked up to see a figure standing there that she jolted upright, startled.
"Wh-what are you doing, sneaking around like a ghost?"
Serena Yardley watched the man before her bed warily.
Ethan Yardley’s eyes were full of tenderness. "If you can’t sleep, I can stay with you. You used to love it when I held you while you slept."
Last night was the same.
Afterward, her small, delicate body had snuggled into his arms. Not only did she fall asleep quickly, but she slept soundly.
Serena Yardley’s cheeks flushed at his words, and she retorted:
"Who wants you here? Get out."
"You really don’t? You seemed quite satisfied last night."
He was deliberately teasing her.
Feeling deeply embarrassed, Serena Yardley threw a pillow at him. "I don’t want you here! Get out!"
Ethan Yardley chuckled, deciding not to provoke her further, and turned to leave.
Before closing the door, he added, "Serena, good night."
His "good night" sent an inexplicable warmth through Serena Yardley’s heart.
She lay back down, her mind filled with what Sylvia Schuyler had told her before.
She thought and thought, but she truly couldn’t figure out what kind of person Ethan Yardley really was.
’If he’s a good person, then why didn’t he believe me? Why did he force me to abort my child and drive me to jump into a river?’
’But if he’s a bad person, he wouldn’t have to be so tolerant and accommodating toward me now, would he?’
’I’m so torn. I have no idea what to do next.’
The next morning, to avoid Ethan Yardley, Serena Yardley skipped breakfast and slipped off to school.
Just after her first two morning classes, she received a text from an unknown number.
The text read: [XX Restaurant. I’ll be waiting for you here at 12. —Sylvia Schuyler.]
Serena Yardley was speechless.
Staring at her phone, she furrowed her brow, wondering why this Sylvia Schuyler person wanted to see her.
’She used to be Ethan Yardley’s fiancée, and now I’m his wife. I guess that makes us rivals, doesn’t it?’
’So this Sylvia Schuyler might not be a good person. I’d better be on my guard.’
At twelve noon, Serena Yardley went to the restaurant Sylvia Schuyler had mentioned, just as requested.
The restaurant wasn’t far from her school, only about a ten-minute walk.
When she arrived, Sylvia Schuyler was already there, seated by the window.
Serena Yardley walked over and sat down across from her.
"What do you want to see me about?"
Looking at the woman opposite her, Serena Yardley had to admit she was a real beauty.
’How could Ethan Yardley not be moved by a woman like this?’
’Or was his only reason for marrying me really just to carry on the family line?’
Sylvia Schuyler passed the menu to Serena Yardley. "Order whatever you like. My treat."
Serena Yardley didn’t beat around the bush and got straight to the point. "Just say what you came to say. I want to get back to school for my afternoon nap."
Sylvia Schuyler didn’t mince words either. She looked at Serena Yardley and asked, "So you’re just going to be with Ethan Yardley like this? You don’t hate him at all for what he did to you?"
Serena Yardley lowered her head in silence.
She couldn’t remember what Ethan Yardley had done to her in the past, so she couldn’t feel the pain from it either.
She wanted to escape, but the man wouldn’t let her go. How could a powerless young woman like her fight against a man so shrewd and powerful?
"Serena Yardley, Ethan Yardley doesn’t love you at all. He only married you because you’re suitable for bearing his children.
But if you actually give him a child, he will absolutely divorce you immediately."
At this, Sylvia Schuyler took out her phone, pulled up a photo, and held it out to her.
"See for yourself. Ethan Yardley prepared a Divorce Agreement a long time ago. He’s just waiting for you to have his child so he can force you to sign it."
She had secretly taken this photo of the Divorce Agreement earlier.
’If even I can’t drive Serena Yardley away by confronting her directly...’
’Then she can’t blame me for resorting to more inhuman methods.’
Serena Yardley stared at the photo on the phone screen.
It was, indeed, a Divorce Agreement. The parties listed were none other than her and Ethan Yardley.
A sudden pang of pain shot through Serena Yardley’s heart. She looked up at Sylvia Schuyler and asked:
"Do you love Ethan Yardley?"
Sylvia Schuyler’s expression shifted, and she replied:
"Of course I don’t love him. But he once hit me with his car, causing an injury that left me unable to have children for the rest of my life. I just want him to compensate me for it.
But when I thought about how you’d be divorced right after giving birth and forced to separate from your own child, I didn’t want you to suffer the pain of being torn from your flesh and blood. That’s why I stepped in to persuade you."
Serena Yardley was silent.
’Is that really true?’
’If what Sylvia Schuyler said is true, then I really shouldn’t stay with that man.’
"Serena Yardley, Ethan Yardley is rich, but if you insist on divorcing him, you’ll get a considerable amount of assets.
With those assets, you’ll instantly become a multimillionaire.
So think it over carefully. Do you want to be in charge of your own life, or do you want to be used as a baby-making tool, only to be thrown away once you’ve served your purpose?"
Serena Yardley lowered her head, silent.
’In that case, it seems like getting a divorce would be the best thing for me.’
’Maybe the real reason that man won’t divorce me is just that he wants me to have his child.’
’Otherwise, why would he have prepared the Divorce Agreement so far in advance?’
A sudden heaviness settled in Serena Yardley’s heart. She stood up and told Sylvia Schuyler:
"I’ll handle my own affairs. I won’t trouble you to worry about them. Now, if you’ll excuse me."
She left quickly.
But she didn’t go back to school. Instead, she hailed a cab and went straight home.
It was noon when she got home. Mrs. Miller had probably gone out grocery shopping, as no one was there.
Serena Yardley went straight to Ethan Yardley’s study.
She didn’t even know what she had come back for.
The moment she entered the study, she started searching everywhere.
Finally, in the desk drawer, underneath a few documents, she found the very same Divorce Agreement Sylvia Schuyler had shown her.
Her body went limp, and she collapsed into the executive chair in despair.
’So everything Sylvia Schuyler said was true.’
’Ethan Yardley really does just see me as a baby-making tool. The only reason he won’t agree to a divorce is because I haven’t given him a child yet.’
’And he even pretended to love me so much, acting all devoted.’
Now, when Serena Yardley thought about how tolerant and accommodating he had been, it felt utterly ridiculous.
Holding the Divorce Agreement, Serena Yardley grabbed a pen and signed her name.
’This time, I absolutely cannot let Ethan Yardley brainwash me again.’
That afternoon, Serena Yardley didn’t return to school. She just sat at home, waiting for Ethan Yardley.
She even sent him a special message, telling him to come home right after work.
Ethan Yardley thought Serena had come to her senses and needed his company.
So, he left work early to rush home to her, arriving at just six o’clock.
The moment he walked in the door, he saw her sitting on the living room sofa. He strode over to her, his voice gentle.
"Why are you home so early today? Next time you want to come back early, give me a call, and I’ll come pick you up."
