Chapter 20: Diamond Duller than Her Tears

The drop earrings were indeed beautiful. Even Isabella had to think so when the teller handed it to her to take.

Holding the earrings gingerly with her fingers, she looked at them for a few seconds before turning to Kaelian.

She wondered if he would be relieved to know that he was giving someone a truly magnificent earring. She didn’t ask Elise, the teller, how much it had cost for Julienne to make it.

All the jewelry she had gotten from Julienne was priceless. But most of them were designed deliberately to look ordinary and weird-looking, a request she made to deceive others.

But this? This wasn’t plain or strange. The full set was breathtaking. Julienne really had given his thought to giving this to her.

A part of her didn’t want to give them away. But Julienne should understand, right?

It was for the sake of someone who gave her a reason to live a little longer.

If he knew this, he probably wouldn’t say anything.

With that in mind, Isabella smiled and said, "These earrings were just delivered and made by the brand’s excellent jeweler. If you wish to impress someone, this should be the one."

Using the cover of the sunglasses, Kaelian slightly narrowed his eyes. The shimmer of the diamonds had slightly dulled because of the dark film. Yet, it did not lower or degrade the quality of the earrings and the gemstones that surrounded it.

Any girl would like it. He was sure his niece would. However, a four-year-old might not understand the value this earring has and just forget about it later.

While he hesitated, Isabella thought that since he couldn’t see anything, he must have some reservations. After all, one cannot trust a person’s words alone.

They only trusted their senses.

And thus, Isabella held the earrings in her palm and handed them to him.

"Here. Feel it."

The white gold was cold to the touch, and its weight was subtle. In contrast to that, her hand and fingertips that had momentarily caressed his palm burned him.

Kaelian didn’t get to react quickly as the earrings fell into his hand. He couldn’t even tell her it was fine not to feel it. His eyes alone could attest that the earrings were extremely nice.

Her light touch disappeared before he could linger on the warmth it carried.

Isabella looked on as his hand closed around the earrings, intensely watching as his fingers unwrapped and rubbed them.

Once. Twice. His fingers rubbed his palm, his fingernails scratching his thin skin until he finally stopped, closing his fists around the earrings again.

Seeing this, she thought he was done inspecting the earrings with his sense of touch.

So, she said, "How is it? Do you like it?"

"No."

"No?"

His answer surprised her.

She looked again at his closed fist, where the earrings were completely hidden.

"Why? Is there something wrong with it?" Isabella couldn’t help but ask. She was wondering what part of the earrings he didn’t like when even she found them beautiful.

Perhaps it is the difference between having one’s eyes to look at its beauty and judging only by using their sense of touch?

Suddenly, a sense of depression filled her heart. She was saddened by the fact that Kaelian might never see anything beautiful in this life again.

"It stings. That’s why I don’t like it."

Kaelian didn’t know why he told her this. There was nothing wrong with the earrings. No, they’re perfectly fine.

Yet, he couldn’t get rid of the tingling feeling that seemed to intensify on the spots she had touched him.

However, what he said was misunderstood by Isabella.

Isabella, who heard his words, jumped with urgency. She rushed to him and held his hand. This time, a little forcefully and more tightly. Her hand wrapped around his wrist while her other hand pried his hand open.

"Why didn’t you say so?" Isabella asked with her brows knitted. "Look, it left a mark on your skin. Things like this shouldn’t be held tightly in your hands."

If she knew that he would be holding it strongly in his hand, she wouldn’t have given it to him.

No, it was her fault for not telling him about it before handing it to him!

Feeling guilty over a mistake on her part and also worried that he’d hurt himself, Isabella kept holding his hand. Then, as if cradling his hand in hers wasn’t enough for her, Isabella suddenly leaned forward and lowered her head to blow on his hand.

The instant the cool breath left her mouth and reached his skin, Kaelian almost flinched and swiped his hand away. But he froze in the act as her eyes reddened with tears, almost spilling from the corners.

Why the hell is she crying? Kaelian thought to himself.

He didn’t think it was part of an act. No one cries at the sight of an insignificant mark left due to an earring stabbing your skin. It didn’t even pierce through his skin, just barely leaving a mark that had turned blue from holding it tight.

Still, it didn’t warrant any tears to be shed.

If she was doing all this to create a good performance, she had done a great job already by tricking him into believing she was an employee at the store. If he truly couldn’t see, he would’ve been deceived by her long ago.

Even if she cried, to her, he was blind. He wouldn’t see it. Thus, using only her voice would suffice.

However, that was the point. He could see everything.

Her tears clung to her long eyelashes like tiny pearls, round and lustrous. Kaelian even had an outrageous thought that the diamond was duller than her tears.

But if what she was doing was still an act... Then, she’s a monster.

Unbeknownst to his thoughts, Isabella grabbed the earring and pressed his skin with her finger, rubbing it as if it would somehow remove the marks.

Isabella had been so worried about him that she forgot everything else.

When time stretched and Kaelian finally realized this wasn’t a mere act, he finally stopped her by trapping the finger rubbing him.

"You can stop now."

Her lashes trembled, and a tear fell onto his hand. The warm liquid turned cold as her wet eyes looked up at him.

"I’m sorry," she whispered.

Kaelian’s gaze stayed on the tear on his hand, then raised to meet hers. He was thankful he had worn the sunglasses, blocking her from detecting his movements.

And he might not have witnessed such a scene.
