Evening had fallen, casting a warm glow over the estate as a sleek black car pulled through the gates, rolling smoothly to a stop in front of the grand villa.
The car door opened, and Harlow stepped out, gripping a single sheet of paper in her hand.
Her heart pounded as she stared at the words printed on it, the DNA test results.
Ava was right.
Claudia wasn’t her sister. It was one thing to suspect the truth, but seeing it confirmed in black and white? That was different.
But now, another question disturbed her, would Frank believe her?
Harlow knew her father all too well. He had always shared a strong bond with both Claudia and Elisa, trusting them blindly. Even if he did find out the truth, there was no guarantee he’d turn against them.
No, knowing Frank, he might still choose to keep Claudia as his daughter rather than cast her out.
Only she had seen their true colors. Only she knew what they were truly capable of.
And that’s why she couldn’t just tell him the truth. She had to show him.
She had to make him suffer just enough to force the truth into the light.
Lost in thought, she barely noticed the approaching footsteps until...
"Welcome back, my villain." That deep, familiar voice pulled her from her thoughts. Harlow lifted her gaze, and there he was.
Alanis.
For some reason, after such a long, exhausting day, just seeing him made something inside her loosen. Even when he was infuriating at times, even when he drove her crazy all the time, he was still her safe place.
Her happiness.
The man who had once destroyed her in her past life... had become the one who gave her peace in this one.
She blinked as she took in his appearance.
His usually neat hair was a mess, tousled from whatever he had been doing. The first three buttons of his white shirt were open exposing his body. His sleeves were raised up to his ankles. An apron was tied loosely around his waist, and in one hand, he held a spatula.
Was he... cooking?
Alanis stretched out a hand toward her. "Come." Harlow hesitated for only a second before stepping forward.
The moment she was close enough, he pulled her into a warm embrace.
"You look exhausted," he murmured, holding her close, tight enough to make her feel safe, but never enough to hurt her.
He held her like something precious. Like something he cherished. So soft and fragile.
Harlow inhaled, catching a faint, familiar scent. She pulled back slightly, looking up at him.
"You smell like... spices?"
Alanis raised a brow. "Do you not like it? I can change if you want." She shook her head. "No, it’s fine." She muttered.
She had always loved cooking. The scent of spices, warm and rich, was something comforting to her. It reminded her of home.
Alanis smirked. "So... did you break any bones at your father’s mansion?" He asked the little woman before him and she smiled. He finally saw that genuine smile. The one that always melted his heart.
"What do you take me for? A fighter?" she mused, playfully punching his shoulder with her knuckles.
Alanis chuckled. "You have a black belt in taekwondo, my villain. A normal person doesn’t have a black belt." Harlow burst into laughter, shaking her head. She had no idea how he found out about that, but it was quite amusing.
"I’m a lady, Alanis. Ladies don’t fight." She barely had time to finish her sentence before he scooped her up effortlessly into his arms.
"Put me down!" she protested, squirming slightly, but even she knew she didn’t really want to fight him off.
Not now.
Not after today.
Not After everything, all she wanted was rest from the hectic day. Maybe when she wakes up, she’ll finally know what to do with Claudia and Elisa.
Harlow sighed, letting herself relax against him.
Alanis carried her easily up the stairs, his grip steady. "You didn’t eat anything this morning," he murmured. "I figured you’d be too busy, so I left my meeting early and came home to cook for you."
Her heart did a little flip at that.
She glanced up at him. "Why did you send the guards? I was fine."
Alanis scoffed. "So they could protect you when you got tired of fighting."
She smiled.
As they reached their bedroom, he nudged the door open with his foot, carrying her inside before closing it the same way.
Harlow arched a brow. "So... you support me fighting?"
Alanis met her gaze, his expression unreadable, then his voice dropped, firm and serious.
"You can destroy the entire city if you want." Her breath caught.
"Burn your father’s mansion, destroy everything I own. Slap the president and offend the higher authorities and I still won’t let anyone lay a hand on you." His dark eyes locked onto hers.
"I should be dead before anyone can touch what’s mine." He added, the intensity in his voice sent a shiver down her spine.
Harlow believed every word he said, Alanis had taken her punishment from hurting Claudia without a second thought. He didn’t let his family lay a finger on her.
She stared up at him, her chest tightening.
This man...
This devil who had once ruined her life has managed to burry himself deep in her heart. He was making her heart desobey her again with just how words of promises. For the first time today, she felt peace.
"I’ve prepared your bath, or do you need my assistance?" Alanis suddenly asked and she shook her head. How could she have forgotten everything that happened last night.
She didn’t want to experience such again. She doubts this time she can be able to control herself. She might just give in to the temptation.
"I... I’ll bath myself." Harlow got out of bed and hurried I to the bathroom. When she stepped in, she locked the door behind her. She would never let last night repeat itself again.
