Chapter 216: Loss (1)

"I left Hazel to rest so if you go in and she is asleep, try not to wake her. She’s not properly dressed so I need to move fast to get her another. Please have the doctor come here sooner, Nathan. I don’t want my daughter to be lying there for long without being looked at Excuse me because I need a moment alone," Renee excused herself.

Renee had held in her tears long enough to not break down in front of Hazel but now she needed a moment alone to do it in private before going back to Hazel.

Helena bit her nails, a habit that she was forced out of long ago but it came back when she was extremely nervous

Hearing what Hazel suffered greatly affected her and then there was her mother on the brink of tears. Why did this have to happen to Hazel of all people? What did Hazel do to deserve this? Why did something so horrible have to happen to anyone and how was Hazel to move on from this?

"I will go sit in the room with Hazel while mother gets her something to change into," Helena said, leaving the two men to talk as it was time she visited Hazel.

This was not the reunion Helena wanted for her sister. They were supposed to hug each other at the door and then talk about how their lives were changing. Speak of Hazel’s life as queen and then about the coming wedding.

Helena was looking forward to questioning Hazel about being a wife and now she felt like it would be insensitive to speak of anything to Hazel.

Nathan rubbed his face. He felt like he hadn’t gotten any sleep but it wasn’t that long since he rested and since Hazel arrived. "Are you certain that someone didn’t do this to her?"

"How would I know? I only went to the palace to bring her here. I don’t know much about who is looking to harm her. It just happened in the carriage," Kenneth answered.

"I just can’t believe that it happened. Perhaps I am just trying to shift the blame elsewhere so Hazel wouldn’t think it was her doing. Why of all days was this happening now? Was it because we would be able to comfort her best? I can’t find any answers," Nathan said, his mind feeling frazzled.

It was good that Hazel was around people who cared for her when it happened but he would prefer that it didn’t happen.

"I don’t know how to face this. How would you?" Nathan asked, turning to Kenneth for help. He wasn’t prepared for this to happen to any of his daughters.

"Honestly, if it were Linda in this position, I would be no different than you. It is something we would never hope to happen to our daughters. It feels like there is nothing you can say or do to make this better. Like you’ve somehow failed your daughter," Kenneth answered.

"I would like for you to get out of my head," Nathan joked as that was exactly what he felt. "I feel as though I am the one who lost something. I lived my life speaking to different kinds of people for business or just for sharing my ideas for the kingdom and I don’t know what to say to Hazel."

"I think that your wife has taken care of telling Hazel what she needs to hear. You just need to show your face and Hazel will feel comforted. Mothers have all the words but fathers have our presence. She will want her husband near," Kenneth said after a pause. "I will bring him here."

"I owe you-"

"You don’t. I used to say it to annoy you, but Hazel truly is like another daughter to me. I wasn’t sending all those gifts over here for nothing," Kenneth joked, trying to put Nathan in a better mood. "I swore to protect the Castros so I am just carrying out my duty and even if Hazel wasn’t queen, I would help her and expect nothing."

"Don’t mention owing me again. I can trust that you would do the same for Linda."

"I would," Nathan replied. "I regret that I hadn’t quickly married her off so she wouldn’t be in the palace. I thought she was strong enough to face what would be thrown at her so I secretly rooted for her but now I wish I had married her off to someone else."

"The queen and king are in love with each other. I hear it from Linda more than I want to. This incident is unfortunate, but unless he doesn’t treat her well, I don’t think you should tell anyone else that you regret this. You should go see her," Kenneth urged Nathan.

Nathan’s mind might be calmed after seeing Hazel.

"I will wait out here a little longer. I might need to go see what is keeping the doctor long before Renee goes to hunt him down. I should also keep an eye on her," Nathan said, looking in the direction that Renee went.

Nathan knew that Renee had to be somewhere crying her eyes out for Hazel. He would need to be by her side to calm her down as right now, she was the voice of reason for Hazel.

"I must go to get the king now and bring him here. Do not let anyone out. This will spread like wildfire if it gets out of your gates. We all need to do our part in letting this matter die here. Try to go in there and comfort her. I will be back soon," Kenneth said, patting Nathan’s back.

The Wallace’s were taking this far better than Kenneth thought that he would handle it if it was Linda.

As Kenneth walked to the door, he tried to think of whether this was the work of anyone. If he had been in the palace more, he might have answers, but his mind was blank. He had to rely on Linda, his sons, or even his father for answers about who Hazel was having trouble with.

The most Kenneth knew was about the former queen as Linda had recently been speaking about evil mother-in-laws.

Like Nathan, Kenneth wished that Hazel wasn’t involved with the palace as this was how her life would always be. Strange events happen and you never know if it was done by someone around you or something natural.

If this was the work of someone there would be war in the palace and the person would find their days coming to an end as stopping the queen from having an heir was a serious crime.

Before Kenneth entered the carriage, he stopped to ask himself, "Did this have anything to do with yesterday?"

Linda had returned from the palace silent rather than going on and on about sitting with Hazel. She looked distraught and wouldn’t share what it was. There were more answers he needed to get from the king.

"To the palace," Kenneth ordered the coachman. He was in for a headache trying to get the king to quietly leave the palace without bringing too much attention to why he was returning without Hazel when he was to be her guard. "We must hope there will be no war."
