The Rogue Alpha's Second Chance-Chapter 28: Barbecue
Chapter 28 - Barbecue
By the next day, Violet's condition eased a lot, and she felt a little less light-headed. The day of bed rest made her feel as though her bones would fall apart.
Therefore, when she learned Lucas planned to hold a barbecue party, in order to celebrate her one month being here— although it was still three days less— Violet jumped up from the bed and tagged along behind to help with the preparation.
Despite Lucas's insistent nagging, Violet did not go rest, believing her health was not that poor.
As Lucas set up the grill outside, the pair of hazel eyes shifted towards Sylas. The man leaned against the chair, fully attentive towards the book in his hand. This made her curious as to what he was reading.
The light breeze flew by, moving Sylas's hair along, and the faint moonlight cast a soft glow on Sylas's face. Together with the greenery behind him, a picturesque image was formed.
Violet badly wanted to take a photo to conserve this moment.
Her hand reached out for the phone in her pocket. Lucas newly bought it for her, letting her know this is a convenience.
"What are you thinking about?"
Lucas's voice cut off Violet's shameful thoughts. Her cheeks burned as Violet shook her head.
Seeing how Lucas was about to grill the meat, Violet stepped forward to do it. She grabbed a skewer and placed it on the heat, saying, "I am good at this."
Lucas poked her forehead with his finger and took the skewer from her.
"Stand back. All this smoke cannot be good for you. We can't have you collapsing here," Lucas said. After he placed the skewer on the grill, he grabbed her shoulders and made her sit down on the chair beside Sylas's.
Violet was about to get up. "Nothing will happen. I feel better today."
Lucas's gaze turned stern. "Be obedient. Listen to me."
Violet pouted. "But I am really good at grilling."
"Then, you can wait until you're better before showing off your skills."
As Lucas continued to grill meat, those hazel eyes were covered in nostalgia. This reminded her of her father and all the good times she had in the pack.
Although Violet wanted to help out in grilling every time, her father would forcibly make her sit at the side, educating her on how it wasn't good for her health.
And then, in order to impress her, the pack members would personally grill the meat for her. They would compete and stuff her plate before asking her how she would rank them.
Violet's eyes watered before she blinked them and looked towards Sylas.
She lowered her head and tried to read the title of the book. Her brows furrowed when she realized the title was in a foreign language.
She wondered what it meant.
"It's in French— une nuit de lune," Sylas spoke out.
Her round eyes stared at Sylas in curiosity. "What does it mean?"
"A moonlit night," he enunciated.
"That sounds like a very romantic title," responded Violet. Violet did not often engage in reading literature with her brain not even able to concentrate on more than a page.
Sylas smiled. "It is quite the contrary. The novel talks about the crimes, very gruesome ones, that happens under the moonlit night. The first page starts out light, discussing about the happy lives of a family.
However, as the Chapters extend, the personalities of the characters twists, each hiding a secret worse than others. Under the moonlit night, bodies are buried in the deep soil while shadows sneer from the dark."
Violet felt goosebumps rise all over her body.
"Do you want to listen further?" Sylas questioned.
Violet stared at the man hesitantly. "You can continue to read. I won't disturb you."
There was something unsettling about the novel. Violet raised her head to look at the almost full moon in the sky. Her guts weren't courageous to carry on listening.
Sylas's expression dropped. "I wanted to discuss about the plot with someone. I guess you are not interested."
Violet blinked her eyes— once, twice. That response from Sylas caught her off guard, and she immediately stated, "I will listen if you want to tell. I just didn't want to bother you."
There was a glint of sinister playfulness in his eyes for a second. "You sure?"
Violet thought she imagined it. There was no way Sylas would wear that look.
"Yeah," Violet stated.
At that moment, Lydia stepped out from the house. Seeing that, Lucas expressed his dissatisfaction. "You are late! I already asked you here to be half an hour ago! You should learn from Violet to be diligent!"
Lydia frowned. "You can eat your grilled meat on your own. It's dangerous for health. Violet, I would suggest you do the same, lest you want to breed some cancerous cells."
Lucas glared at her. "I didn't call you here to ruin the fun. Leave if you want to be such a sour face."
Lydia rolled her eyes at Lucas and sat down. She placed a slice of apple pie on the plate and ate it slowly while scrolling through her phone.
Meanwhile, Lucas was done grilling first batch of meat, and once he had them on the plate, he brought it over to Violet for tasting.
Violet smilingly took a bite out of it, and her eyes widened, sparkling at the flavorful, juicy meat.
"This is delicious!" she expressed.
"Then, enjoy slowly."
Violet's gaze shifted towards Lydia, and she considerately asked, "Are you really not going to eat? This is good."
Before Lydia could respond, Lucas scoffed and stated, "Leave her alone. She has such a refined taste bud. Definitely, she would disdain such mortal food."
Lydia did not bother to glance at Lucas, and that irritated him further.
Violet then held up the plate to Sylas, offering him. Sylas stared at her face for a second before looking at the plate with a frown. As if understanding his thoughts, Violet immediately reached for fork on the table and picked up a piece of meat from the skewer.
Sylas put down his book and took a bite out of the meat.
He nodded, satisfied with the flavor.
Violet ate another piece of meat. She closed her eyes, and the corner of her eyes curved up.
The spices provided a kick, and the warm meat, accompanied by the heat from the fire, made her feel satisfied in this chilly weather.
Then, those pair of hazel eyes fixated on Sylas, waiting for him to narrate the story to him.
Sylas understood her intention and started, "The novel starts out with a family of four staying in a small cottage in the countryside. The father works as a carpenter, and the mother..."
Lucas, on the other hand, brought over another batch of grilled meat and sat down. While he began to eat, he frowned seeing how Violet intently listened to the story.
"Alpha is going around, pranking others again," Lucas commented.
At that, Lydia looked back and nodded. There was pity in both of their eyes.
Lucas smiled. "Then again, for him to do that, he is finally opening up to Violet. Violet might need to endure a little."
Lydia furrowed her brows and had many thoughts running through her head, compared to the simple headed Lucas.
Looking at the worried Lydia, a playful glint crossed through Lucas's eyes, and he exclaimed, "There's a lizard on your shoulder."
The thought of the scaly reptile made Lydia let out a soft scream as she stood up and shook her shoulder, trying to get rid of it.
"Whe—"
Before she could carry on, a piece of meat was pushed against the lips, and she could only accept it with her mouth. As she chewed, the strong flavors invaded her taste bud, and she glared at Lucas.
Lucas grinned as though he had successfully done something bad.
Then, he gasped, covering his mouth. "Oh no, what are we going to do now? Ms. prim and proper Lydia is going to catch cancer now."
Irritated Lydia kicked on his feet.
She poured herself a glass of beer and was about to take a sip when Lucas reached out to hold her hand and stopped her.
"Why don't you stay away from alcohol?" Lucas's tone was firm.
Lydia's eyes met with Lucas's, and her memories went back to what happened the last time she was drunk. Although Lydia pretended to erase those memories, acting as though nothing happen, now she had to face them again.

She pushed away Lucas's hand, and the messy emotions within her forced her to drink the entire glass at once.
