Chapter 239: Manipulation

It had taken him days to get here, and when he got here and the guards at the gate refused him entrance, he’d used his spell to pass by them. He didn’t have to ask to know where his sister was in the palace because he’d used another spell to find that out, but the servants who had never seen him around had tried to stop him from going up the stairs.

His rage from finding out that Lucian had hurt his sister had not settled within the days he’d traveled. His first thought when he saw the prince was to beat him to his death. He’d attacked without a second thought, even though he knew Lucian’s strength was extraordinary.

Now, however, since he could affect the prince by getting his sister’s attention all to himself, Rylan used that opportunity.

"Ouch!" He faked a grimace when she pulled out a piece of glass stuck in his shoulder. She hurriedly apologized and leaned down to blow air onto it.

"My God, Lucian, you shouldn’t have stabbed him this much!" Ave turned sharp eyes towards her husband, who looked completely healed and back to normal like nothing had happened, while her brother still had glass pieces stuck to his skin. "Hand me that bottle of medicine," she told him as she dabbed Rylan’s wound to stop the bleeding.

Lucian’s jaw tightened as he turned to glare at Rylan, who looked at him with a smirk on his face. It was all he could do not to reach out and stab the man again. He had been the one to attack him first, and yet Ave was more worried about Rylan than she was him. Though they might be siblings, Lucian wasn’t willing to share her love with another man, regardless of their relationship. Aaron—Rylan, whoever he was—is an annoying asshole. The man had stabbed him with a dagger, and if Lucian were human, he would have almost lost his life, and yet his wife had not for once looked his way with concern since she knew Rylan was her brother.

Was her love for her brother much more than her husband?

"Lucian, get the bottle!" she snapped impatiently at him when he still didn’t move to get the bottle of medicine.

It seemed it was, Lucian thought, disheartened despite of himself as he moved to obey her and get the medicine. She took it from him without even sparing him a glance and continued to attend to her brother. She had almost used her powers to heal him earlier, but Rylan was smart enough to stop her from doing so before Lucian could.

The siblings seemed to get along so fast they forgot about his existence in the room. As Ave treated him, Rylan kept asking her questions about the future and everything there was to know. She promised to make drawings for him just like she had for Lucian, and that made his heart twist into knots of jealousy. She even told Rylan about a cat she owned, something she’d never told Lucian.

After Lucian was forced to be his wife’s assistant in treating her brother while she paid no attention to him, she was finally done and was taken to another room to freshen up on Lucian’s order to the servant.

"Let’s put our differences aside and do it because we care about her," Rylan said after he was left behind with Lucian in the room they had destroyed in their fight.

"She is in more danger than you think now that Caelan is the new Emperor. A few days ago, word arrived in Banzai saying she was responsible for Madeline’s death. The Banzai would give anything to have her head. On my way to Nazia, I came across posters of her portraits. She has a price on her head. Anyone who finds and takes her to the Empress will be given a chest of gold and a house. The Empire is going down in poverty, and many are willing to give anything to get their hands on her," Rylan remarked grimly as he wore a shirt Ave had taken from Lucian’s things and given to him before she left the room.

Lucian had known this would happen if Caelan were to be the Emperor before he took back the throne from him; furthermore, they knew about Ave being the witch the night creatures had been searching for their entire lives. However, he’d not expected them to put a big price on her head.

The Empire had more commoners than nobles; with such a huge price, everyone would be after her and would do anything to take her to the imperial palace. Elara would stop at nothing until she had her hands on Ave and used her blood and powers to unseal the night creatures from their spell barrier. The moment her other family members walked out of that barrier, Ave’s life, and every other witch’s, wouldn’t be safe again. Lucian couldn’t allow that to happen. free𝑤ebnovel.com

"The Nazia will not help us. In fact, I suspect they are planning to send us away very soon," Lucian remarked to Rylan, who asked about his progress with the people here.

"Then it seems I have put too much faith in you when I handed my sister into your care. I am yet to take the throne of Banzai, but I will very soon. If you can’t protect her, I am willing to take her back with me and keep her somewhere safe in my presence," Rylan declared with a serious voice as he looked Lucian dead in the eye, something no one else but Ave could do.

"You can’t take her away from me. She is my wife and mine to protect. She will stay wherever I am," Lucian said calmly despite the irritation he was feeling. Though he knew without taking the Nazia’s support, things were bound to go wrong, especially now that Ave had a price on her head, and something told him if he ever agreed for Rylan to take her away to keep her safe, Lucian would never see her again. This man would make sure he kept them away from each other. He couldn’t bear to part ways with her. Never.

"Then do something about the Nazia. You are not a Vargoth for nothing. In the years I studied your kind and the Nazia, I discovered you once ruled over the wolves. You could rule over them again and make them bow to your feet if you want to. If they are not willing to help you, make them have no choice. But whatever you do, my sister must not be harmed again, or I swear... I’ll kill you if it’s the last thing I do," Rylan warned in a low dangerous voice as he looked at Lucian.

Lucian wasn’t that surprised that the man knew about the Nazia being werewolves. He was smart, arrogant, and very full of himself. Lucian wanted to hate the bastard, but seeing how he cared about Ave and that whatever he did was for her sake, he put his personal feelings about the prince aside to focus more on his wife’s safety. He needed to cooperate with Rylan to make sure Ave would be protected from those who wanted to use her.

"What do you suggest I do to make the Nazia have no choice?" Lucian asked as he looked at Rylan, who smirked at his question.

"Now we are talking."

---

Ave had just finished taking her bath and had changed into another set of traditional dress of the Nazia with the help of Lydia this time, as the Nazia servants seemed to not come to attend to her like they usually did. She was thinking of going back to see what Rylan and Lucian were talking about for so long when Lydia informed her that she had a visitor.

"Who is it?" she asked curiously.

"It’s me," came the voice of Princess Nina before Lydia could talk.

Ave frowned as she turned to meet the princess, who ordered Lydia to excuse them. She walked into the room like she was walking down a runway, her curvy hips swaying with every elegant step she took. She wore a yellow crop blouse that clutched to her rounded full breasts, her flat belly bare, and a skirt that had a slit that ran down her alluring thigh. If a woman like this was in the modern world, Ave thought in admiration, men and women alike would fall over themselves while drooling over her grace and beauty. She was a walking seduction!

Did she purposely dress like this around the palace because she wanted her husband’s attention? Ave thought, as she had come to realize only Princess Nina wore more revealing clothes than the others. She always over-swayed her hips when walking. Poor thing, too bad the man she wanted so badly had been taken, and Ave was never going to give her any opportunity to get her man.

Although Ave didn’t like the princess since the day she discovered she had feelings for Lucian and had the intentions of seducing him, she tried to mask her resentment and smiled at her when she walked into the room.

"Good morning, Your Highness," Ave greeted with a smile like the princess was a friend of hers, when deep down, she wanted the beautiful woman far away from anywhere close to her or Lucian if possible. "To what do I owe this early morning visit?" she asked, as Nina didn’t smile back and was regarding her like a little ant she’d step on.

"You haven’t heard, have you?" Nina finally spoke after regarding the human to see what Prince Lucian saw in her that he wasn’t willing to take another wife for her sake. She couldn’t for the life of her see anything in Ave but paleness and the fragility of a human. She’d heard words going around this morning about how the human was a witch, but to the were-people, humans and witches were alike. Her witch powers could never do anything to make her strong enough to mate with a were-person. Humans would forever be human as long as they did not have another form.

"Heard what?" Ave asked with a slightly confused look. Since the moment she’d woken up from her mini coma yesterday, she hadn’t stepped out of their room until this morning after the intense fight between Lucian and her brother. She was now staying in one of the guest rooms while the other room was being repaired.

"Oh, it seems he indeed didn’t tell you about it." Nina chuckled softly before she walked around the room as she added, "The king has decided to send you all away. Nazia will not stand by Prince Lucian," she declared, taking the pleasure of seeing the shock on Ave’s face, but she quickly masked it with calmness, as if not wanting Nina to see how terrified she was at that news.

"Why? I mean, why tell us now when we’ve been here for weeks? If your people won’t stand by us, you should have allowed us to find somewhere else to—" Ave was saying in frustration, as she knew what was at stake now that the Nazia had finally made their decision, when Nina cut her off.

"It wouldn’t have been this way had you not been in the picture, Aveline."

Ave gasped, "Me? What have I got to do with your king’s decision? Did I disrespect him in any way, or was it because of the secret that made him decide not to help my husband?" she asked in confused disbelief, as she knew she had been on her best behavior since the day they came here. Could it be because she had discovered the secret of them being werewolves? Was he so displeased by it that he decided not to help Lucian?

When they first came here, Lucian had been confident that they’d be welcomed in Nazia and the king would support them. Now that they’d suddenly changed their minds, and the princess said it was her fault, then it could only be because of the secret she uncovered.

"I’ll go talk to him myself," Ave said as she made for the door, but Nina’s words halted her.

"Everything could be right again if you would talk Prince Lucian into doing what is best for him and everyone else."

Ave, who had walked to the door, stopped and turned around. "What do you mean?"

Nina smiled. "Nazia will give everything to Prince Lucian if he agrees to take me as his second bride," she declared. But before Ave could say anything, she continued to speak. "Haven’t you ever wondered why your husband hasn’t consummated your marriage? It’s because a were-person and a human can never be together in such a way. He fears killing you because of the strength our kind possesses in bed. So tell me, if he can’t touch you, how would he have an heir to take on his name and keep the werewolves’ clan from falling into the wrong hands?"

Ave stared at Nina with slightly widened eyes. All this while, she’d wondered what made Lucian stop and hesitate whenever they were about to have sex. But it turned out he was scared of killing her. And now, because he couldn’t touch her in bed as he believed her to be fragile as well, the Nazia weren’t willing to risk their kind to support a man who would never have a child to take on his name.

"So you want me to talk my husband into marrying you?" Ave asked quietly.

Nina nodded. "For his sake," she said.

"If he marries you, the Nazia would go to war with him against the Empress?" Ave asked.

Nina nodded again. "Yes."

"The Nazia are only hesitating to help now because Lucian isn’t willing to marry a woman who could give him an heir, right?"

She nodded again, this time with a small frown on her face when Ave fell silent. "Are you going to talk him into marrying a second wife?" Nina asked, uncertain of what the human was thinking with a thoughtful look on her face.

"What if we consummate our marriage and I have his heir? Would he still need to marry another?" Ave questioned, taking Nina by surprise, as that wasn’t what she expected. Nina knew how human females were easy to manipulate, and once they realized how helpless they were, they’d do anything to give the person they loved what would help them. They weren’t as possessive as the werewolves’ women, who would never share their man with another.

Nina snorted. "Before you have any misbelief of being able to carry his heir, let me tell you this: no human has ever had the pleasures of the flesh with a werewolf and lived to carry his child. Prince Lucian is two times stronger than our kind. He’ll kill you before you bear his child," she told the human in case she believed she could bear his heir without needing Nina to marry Lucian.

"What if I am his mate?" Ave asked calmly.

Nina let out a disbelieving laugh, as if Ave had said something stupid. "You can never be. Humans don’t mate with were-people; it has never happened before. And just so if you have forgotten, the prince has no mate. His curse runs deeper than anyone can break, and you, Red, cannot be his mate."

Ave didn’t bother to argue with the princess on that and remained in thoughtful silence.

"If you love him as you make it seem, you’d talk to him to do what is right. A man gains more respect and power when he has an heir to carry his name, and since you can’t give him that, let him take another who can," Nina said.

Saying this, Nina didn’t wait to hear her answer, as she’d gotten it from the defeated expression she sighted on the human girl’s face. They are all the same; she’d surely talk the prince into marrying her to keep herself from the danger that awaited her outside the walls of the Nazia protection. The girl knew the moment they got thrown out of here she’d be in danger. All Nina had to do was talk her brother into allowing them to stay here for a few more days so the human could change the prince’s mind to marry her.

Nina left the room smiling.
