Chapter 309: The memory fragments

[Lucy’s POV: ]

The memory fragments were monsters that contained a set of memories of their past selves, the negative memories to be more precise.

They were a kind of undead that were only born from people that had endured a variety of deep traumas throughout their lives.

Born from not the body of the dead, or the soul, or the skeleton, they were a condensed form of negative memories that had taken on a dangerous, complete spiritual form that made any kind of physical or magic attacks useless against them.

’They were a rare kind of unkillable monsters.’

They did not have a physical body so physical attacks wouldn’t work on them and since they were only a cluster of specific memories with a unique will of their own, they also practically did not have a body that could be affected with a simple kind of magic.

’They were free and eccentric in nature. Creatures that were like an evil child in nature.’

The minds of the challengers that came across them were overtaken by them without any exceptions.

They practically possessed their bodies and after taking control of their mental bodies as well, they showed them the dreadful memories that they had experienced, one that were trailered to disturb their targets the most.

’From some cruel scene on the battlefield to the most horrible kind of memory that no mortal could survive if it was played on a loop.’

They naturally did their best to break down the spirits of the individuals, completely consume their mental bodies while doing that, and when needed, they would even create a new kind of dream for them that would be an amalgamation of all kinds of traumatic things that they had been through when they were alive.

[Falling to a memory fragment was the same as fighting the strongest fear one had. They were creatures who got happy when their targets burned in their own misery.]

There were only two ways to deal with them. And the people of this world only knew one of them.

’Surviving the trauma that they showed them, stay strong, and keep their minds firm.’

If they see what they are showing has no effect on them after at least thirty minutes, they naturally leave them and jump away to some other location.

’It’s rare for them to go after a target that someone else had tried as they find it dirty, so if one survives against one of them once, they can walk away from them unharmed.’

But if they cannot do that... I know very well just how much pain they can make one feel.

And I do not mean just the mental pain.

Genuine mental And physical pain... these little creatures are capable of showing the targets that fall to their dreams, a kind of hell that would be more hellish than the harshest depths of deep Hell.

’They are one of the most difficult creatures to deal with in this world.’

At least from the sane human perspective, they were the deadliest devils that no mortal would want to face if possible.

"Awwwwww~. How cute~."

"Wwwwwww!"

"Wwwwww~!"

"Www-wwww!"

But we know Auriel. She finds creepy cute and the good cute things boring.

"Alright. Spin around. The one that spins first will get another treat~."

She was treating those dangerous creatures like they were mere dogs and was giving them condensed memory fragments, a valuable material that Raz doesn’t sell to just anyone.

’It’s a difficult material that not just any dimensional merchant can get their hands on. Most of them wouldn’t even know of its existence.’

But since we had Raz, it was easy to procure these rare things, the second method to deal with any kind of creature that dealt with memories of individuals.

"Using those things on these lowest rank memory fragments is still something I don’t approve, El. Don’t waste all of them."

"I do what I want to do with them! They are mine, hump!"

She was still upset since I told her she couldn’t have the revenue generated from this stream for her personal uses.

She had been using a lot of money since the last month on her personal project after she got some kind of inspiration from one of Anna’s works and since I have no idea what it was that she was working on, I didn’t appreciate her spending so much money.

’She was spending a lot. Like in hundreds of thousands like crazy.’

She was in her rare phase of creative creation where she didn’t want to get hindered by some useless limitations like money.

She was having fun and if I didn’t give her my own money after she emptied her own, she was going to use Cary’s.

It was impossible to stop her, so at the very least, instead of having her take the money we make through this little stream, it was better to just invest it.

’But she didn’t take it well.’

She took away my sword and gave it to them earlier and now she was throwing those precious crystals to the dangerous creatures without even a hint of fear.

[No one would ever know what was transpiring in the outside world when the challengers were facing the gravest mental challenge of their lives.]

The entire team was sleeping right now with some of the memory fragments attached to their heads that were playing with their dreams while she was playing with the rest of the fragments just a few steps ahead of them.

Seeing the other fragments having fun stimulated the ones stuck on them. It was obvious even though they were trying their best to increase the intensity of whatever nightmare they were showing them, they were finding what she was doing more fun.

’They were fickle creatures like children with a low intelligence that mostly only operated on their instincts.’

There were a limited number of these creatures in this dungeon, and we needed as much as we could for future use.

"Good~. You are doing great! You! Spin the other way too~."

She knew how to use her Charm and since she had experience dealing with creatures even more dangerous than these things, she had no fear of these small ’cute’ things.

They looked like uneven translucent masses of various colours that weren’t specifically cute or amazing, or anything special in any way.

They were an uneven mess, that couldn’t even be called creatures.

But she found them cute. As always.

"You want this? You can join us if you all want as well."

The members of Clubs were trained by us physically and mentally. They also carried items with mental fortifications so they could have defeated the memory fragments if they had endured for long enough.

’But since the fragments increase the intensity and madness of the dreams against tough opponents exponentially, they wouldn’t have had any will to fight remaining in them after dealing with them.’

We knew very well just how dangerous it was to go against these creatures. Even the two of us would need a few minutes to deal with one of them.

They were unique creatures and there was no need to kill these useful things, so... we were helping them.

"Wwwwww..."

"That’s right~. Come! Join us! You will get treats as well!"

"Wwww..."

She was baiting them for a while now.

"Wwwww."

And it looked like the results of her efforts were showing themselves.

[ "Looks like you are done on your side." ]

[ "Like hell I am. I still have to take them away, play with them, give them names, teach them a few things-" ]

[ "You don’t have to do those things though..." ]

[ "Why? You have free time go show the viewers around the place. The moment I stepped in to help them must have made you some good cash, right?" ]

[ "Well... that’s true but-" ]

[ "Shove that fucking money in your ass and leave us alone then!" ]

Why would she be so angry over my words... I even said that as a joke.

"Haaa..."

I don’t know what goes on in her head sometimes.

[{ "What inspired her, Anna?" }]

[{ Hmmm? Master? }]

She wasn’t with us right now. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Ever since we entered this fallen fortress she left us and went to see this special structure for herself, experience the new undead palace and see the creatures from up close.

’She had found a usable room and was researching the undead there since we entered here.’

She was lost in her research and was having fun, I can feel that much.

[{ "I’m asking what did you make that inspired El so much?" }]

[{ Ah, is master talking about the project one is currently working on? }]

She was so focused on whatever she was doing that she didn’t even listen what I said previously.

’I wonder what exactly she is she even doing with the undead?’

She was very thorough with everything she did so if she was researching the undead, she would capture the youngest kind to the oldest one, except the final boss, and gather them in a place.

She would take samples from all over them, use some of her artifacts that she had for the special specimen like them, and then she would conduct weird experiments on them until she gets everything there is to know about them.

’She was someone that founded some of the most infamous terrorist organisations of the Worldline so these simple things she does are expected of her.’

But that makes her special, and kind of similar to El.

[{ "Yes I’m talking about that thing. What sparked such a flame in her heart that my few words upset her so much?" }]

[{ Oh... that would be my System setup organiser if one is right. However, even one doesn’t know for certain. Anyways, master... I’m in the middle a breakthrough right now- }]

[{ "Right. Go do your work." }]

[{ Thanks master~! }]

Her answer wasn’t specific but I got the basic idea.

’I at least know what it might be now.’

But anyway, that thing aside...

She had succeeded in taking the fragments away.

Which meant the challengers were free now... and that it was time to resume my stream.
