Chapter 338: 338 A trial from the past

[OP: ]

Both of them were downstairs now, in the dining area where they had eaten with the rest of the children occasionally.

[ "What kind of test was it for you?" ]

She had slaughtered the enemies that weren’t any threat to her in any way.

They were weak and she crushed them completely so they weren’t the main objectives of this test either.

There definitely was something more to this test than just killing the opponent and that much both of them knew already.

[ "Something not so fun. You better not ask for the details since I know what you had wasn’t that fun either.

Let’s just... let’s just keep it to ourselves for as long as we can." ]

Just like how she had faced those children, he had faced the memories of the past.

He saw how the children had lived and how the orphanage owner made their lives worse than hell.

There wasn’t any deep meaning to this test of watching the past events that he wasn’t aware of, and they weren’t going to mean anything in any way so he only had to watch things.

And, since they were just projected memories, he could do nothing more than to watch them.

[ "Alright then, in fine with that." ]

Eva was a very close person to him and someone irreplaceable that he cherished deeply.

She was a family to the two of them and someone they couldn’t repay for even with their lives.

For him especially, she was a precious person.

So...

[ "Yes... thanks." ]

Watching her in that state, watching the things that pig bastard did to her, helplessly watching how the place where the two of them had lived and spent the early years of their lives, was a playground for that demonic fiend...

Watching the death, sorrow, helplessness, darkness and despair, seeing the precious person they cared about... the one She cared about being forced by that pig bastard, was no ordinary pain for him.

It wounded his very soul and he wanted to reflect on his past mistake of not torturing that bastard enough.

He deserved more than what they gave him and after seeing all this, they... he knew shading tears at what they did to him was of no use.

He deserved it. He deserved more than just that.

[ "Haaa. Alright then, what’s the final?" ]

There were a good number of places that they still had to watch in this place but if Lucy had asked her to come down here, she knew there was a reason for that.

[ "Well, let’s go down? What more re could there be." ]

She could not forget anything and so she had to fight the children that they had seen while growing up and since he was an empathetic individual, he couldn’t watch them suffer even though he knew they weren’t the real things.

[ "Would the boss be in the basement or something? In the first place, what was this test even about?" ]

There was no system notification or any lead that would point towards the underground however, Lucy knew for a fact if the two of them were dealing with what they had experienced in the past in this place, then there was no way the bastard that was the cause of all their suffering in this orphanage wouldn’t be here.

[ "We don’t know about the test and we don’t have to worry about it either. Clearing whatever we are up against comes first." ]

[ "Right. Let’s go then." ]

They already had an idea what kind of thing they faced on their sides, and the link they had revealed more than just basic surface emotions.

-Tap. Tap. Tap.

He knew the kind of things she was feeling when facing those children.

He knew about her complex mix of emotions that she herself interpreted as joy or happiness or excitement... even though the core of it all was in fact sadness.

[ "Looks the same." ]

[ "Yeah, well, let’s walk a little further." ]

She on the other hand understood what he might be going through from the suppressed pain that he was feeling.

He was mentally stronger than anyone else she knew so he was able to handle himself by rationalising all that he might have suffered from, but that did not mean that test didn’t do anything to him.

[ "The guards should be around." ]

However strong anyone might be, pain was pain. Be it mental or physical, emotional or spiritual.

Any being in this world could feel pain, even those that mentally were incapable of doing so, and even the godly higher beings that are beyond the standards of the mortals.

Pain was a natural and eternal concept. And when someone as good as him was hurt by something, she knew well just how bad that hidden pain was.

[ "I don’t see anything." ]

[ "I don’t sense anything either." ]

[ "Looks like we were wrong, this really isn’t about fighting at all." ]

The headmaster knew about their combat abilities already so there really wasn’t any need to test their combat skills.

He knew they had done some amazing things and he knew they knew a good lot about the things they do and about his great mother.

He knew they were interesting and that’s why even the two of them knew he wouldn’t test their combat abilities on such a small scale.

[ "Not really." ]

There underground room of the pig bastard where he used to torture the kids before killing them, the same place where they tortured him and killed the first being of this life. This was a place that they could never forget about even if they wanted to, the same place where they got the first title of their lives.

There were many reasons to remember this place, so they knew for certain what things belonged to this place and what was new to this corridor.

[ "Look at that lamp." ]

There was a door before them and there were a few lamps lighting this entire area here.

Everything seemed ordinary, so even the most careful individuals would walk forward on these paths.

However, as someone that had been here and knew about this place, Lucy knew that the certain lamp on the left side was not something that belonged in this passage.

[ "Oh... that shouldn’t be here, right?" ]

[ "No it shouldn’t... and which one are we talking about again?" ]

[ "The third one on the right?" ]

[ "Yes... no. It’s on the left side for me." ]

[ "Hmmm? What?" ]

They knew there might be some differences in these things for both of them, but this certain difference was a critical one.

[ "Right. So, what should we do now?" ]

He was confused now...

There was a lamp here that shouldn’t belong here and there was a lamp on the her side that also shouldn’t belong there, but both the lamps were on different sides and she was not kidding this time.

They genuinely had no idea what this situation was but, one thing was certain.

[ "Let’s touch it together. Perhaps something will happen." ]

[ "Perhaps nothing will happen. Who knows?" ]

[ "Right. Then suggest something better." ]

He knew she was cursing at him right now for doubting her interpretation but that was natural.

She was the one that went with intuition even though she was the smarter one among them and even though he was not as smart as her, he preferred logic over intuition.

[ "Well, we can just try to see if this is some kind of trap or not, but doing so will only waste time as you might have already figured out. So, let’s go with your suggestion." ]

He knew she had only suggested something that didn’t make any sense after eliminating all the other possibilities, and since his own logic also pointed out to do something to find what these lamps were, he could only go with her concerning suggestion.

[ "Bastard." ]

She was angry and he knew she must be pouting after he said that, and there was nothing much that he could do after that.

[ "Are you there?" ]

[ "Of course dumbass. Count to three." ]

Nothing happened even after they were standing right before the lamp so they were certain whatever this lap was, was not a simple and obvious trap.

They could tell there was something more to this trap so, when they stood before it, and counted down to touch it at the same time, they had this gut feeling that something was going to happen after they did that.

[ "Three... two... one, now!" ]

-Oooooooooooooooong!

They touched the lamp together, and something happened.

-Zaaaaaaaaa...

Something certainly happened. They knew something changed in that corridor as well as somewhere in this building. They could tell there was something going on in this place after they had touched those lamps, however, in that particular area, there was no change.

[ "What the hell happened?" ]

[ "I... have no idea." ]

They looked around, they checked for clues, they searched the area before them, but even behind the only door here, there was nothing.

Everything was empty and clear so this confused them even more.

[ "Did something change upstairs?" ]

[ "There’s only one way to find that out." ]

[ "Right." ]

Something happened and that much they were sure of.

They couldn’t use their skills and Lucy’s stats were restricted completely, but still, their senses were still with them.

They knew the air around them had changed the moment they touched these lamps and they knew for certain something was going on in this place.

[ "Be careful, Lucy. I have a bad feeling about this." ]

[ "I was going to say the same thing. Be careful." ]

They knew the headmaster was not someone that would create pointless tests.

Even if there was meaning behind everything that they had been through after entering this place, there was nothing that actually gave them any chance to showcase what they had.

However... they knew with this weird feeling, whatever they were going to face upstairs was going to be the real test.
