Chapter 16: IT’S NOT WORTH IT fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Ranon kept his word; he drove Hazel back to her home.

During the drive, Ranon didn’t say anything; hence, Hazel used this opportunity to take a nap until they arrived. But as she had been very tired the whole day, emotionally and physically, she didn’t wake up even when Ranon had stopped driving.

The man stared at the woman next to him. She looked as innocent as a baby right now, but he happened to catch the sight of how fierce her eyes were when she stared at Arlo Barlowe.

Did they know each other? There was no information or connection that could make him draw that conclusion.

Furthermore, the Rose and the Barlowe family had different lines of business, as far as Ranon knew.

But what about this woman?

It was a mystery. This woman was a complete mystery for him.

Ranon remembered the night he spent with her and the stain of blood on the bedsheet. She had never been with anyone, and he was pretty sure she was a virgin, but for someone who had just lost her V card to a stranger, Hazel was very chill about it.

"Who are you?" Ranon talked to himself, and when he wanted to wake her up, Hazel opened her eyes abruptly and caught his hand. Her eyes were alert. He saw this before when he appeared all of a sudden behind her back. She had her guard up. "We are here."

Hazel blinked her eyes, and her expression was less guarded. "Oh. I am sorry; I fell asleep." She let go of his hand, but instead, Ranon was the one who held hers. "Hmm? How can I go if you are holding my hand?"

"Are you on a pill?"

For a moment, Hazel’s sleepy brain didn’t function fast enough to get his point, but he reminded her about that night.

"Don’t worry, I will not be pregnant." One of the reasons why Arlo cheated on her with Aubrey was because they discovered she was not able to get pregnant due to the medical issue.

That was sucky, but River wasn’t really fond of motherhood to begin with, so the news was not as devastating for her.

"How so?" Ranon didn’t want any complication in the future. They did the deed, and it was normal to be cautious.

"I have a medical issue. I can’t get pregnant." Hazel then patted his shoulder lightly. "Don’t worry about that. I don’t want any problems in the future too. Let’s keep it professional."

After saying that, River jumped out of the car, leaving Ranon puzzled, because he was sure there was no mention of her infertility in her medical report.

Yes. Ranon knew everything, to the point of knowing the last time she visited the hospital and her annual medical checkup.

None of it mentioned anything about infertility...

"What happened with you?"

"Nothing."

"You drank too much for it to be nothing."

Arlo had been sitting in one of the famous bars in Talbar City. Yes. He had not yet left this city because the sight of that woman with brown eyes kept haunting him. He felt very familiar with that gaze.

"Stop this. Tell me what happened." Noah was concerned about his friend. He narrowed his eyes and tried his best guess. "Did River figure out your affair with Aubrey? Is that why she has been missing for weeks?"

Noah was Arlo’s right-hand man; he knew everything that was going on in Arlo’s life.

"Damn, Arlo! I told you to stop your affair, but you didn’t listen!" Noah clicked his tongue. He was annoyed. This man used to be very smart, but he changed lately. Dumb. How on earth did he ever think River would take him back after what he had done behind her back with Aubrey? "Is that why the Lozen family is on edge, because they can’t find her?"

Arlo glared at Noah. There was a reason why they couldn’t find River, and he was the reason behind it.

"Do you know where she is?"

"I don’t know."

Both of them fell silent while the music was blaring from the dance floor down there. Noah and Arlo stared at the crowd, who looked very happy, forgetting the world out there.

"Is that worth it?" Noah finally asked. "Cheating on River with Aubrey."

Arlo didn’t answer that. He had been asking the same question over and over again. He couldn’t seem to find the proper answer to reply to that, but deep down, it was not that hard if he was being blunt.

"No," Arlo finally said.

Noah clicked his tongue again. "Then why did you cheat on her?" Arlo didn’t answer that question. "If you regret it, why don’t you leave Aubrey?"

Still, Arlo didn’t answer that; but when Noah thought he was not going to reply, the former actually opened his mouth.

"Because it will mean I left her for nothing."

If he had to let go of Aubrey, it would mean that he had let go of River for nothing, even though he couldn’t see why he wanted to stay with Aubrey. That woman irritated him more and more with her childish act that he thought was adorable in the beginning.

River was very independent, and Aubrey’s clinginess made him feel good. But right now, those same traits irked him to the bone.

"At the very least, I got something from it." Especially now when he couldn’t get River back. There was a high chance she was already dead, and he would live with this guilty feeling for the rest of his life.

===========================

Thankfully, when Hazel arrived, Dylan was not at home. She didn’t know where he was, but she didn’t care even just a bit.

However, instead of Dylan, it was her father, who had just returned from his business trip. He was sitting in the living room, and Hazel almost got a heart attack seeing him.

Grayson Rose.

That man was already old, probably in his late fifties, but you could tell he still had this charisma of the leader of the family.

"Where did you go?"
