Divine Heritage: Only I Can Judge The gods-Chapter 79: Fire and Agony
"Damian! We are running out of ammunition over here!"
"Captain! The monsters are breaking the front line!"
"Damian, we need more troops at the left flank!"
A man with dark brown hair and weary eyes ran forward, pushing some soldiers aside and lifting his gun, a military grade tank buster rifle.
He put his eyes to the scope and aimed it at the gigantic skeleton that was slowly approaching.
The thing was taller than the average man and made up of thick bones too large to be human.
"Tch."
Damien gritted his teeth as soft clouds of smoke drifted into the air from the cigarette locked between his lips.
’Nice and steady...’
The biggest problem was the skeleton’s large shield, it was capable of warding off even the torrents to some extent.
He just had to wait for the perfect opportunity...
"Captain! The skeleton is getting clos—"
"Shut the fuck up!"
Boom!
The rifle breathed out fire as Damian accidentally squeezed the trigger, unloading one devastating shot at the Skelton.
The bullet flew just above the shield, even brushing against it slightly before exploding against the skull of the skeleton, shattering bone fragments on the street.
There was a moment of silence.
"That’s the captain for you!"
"Show them hell guys!"
Damian straightened his rifle and puffed up a cloud of smoke.
"Yeah that’s right, I definitely did that on purpose."
He observed the area around him and knitted his brows together. This was relatively a decent battle, so far, they had only lost a few soldiers and the curse bearers were doing enough to keep things at bay.
Now all they had to do was take out the wave boss, after that they could finally get some rest.
Damian spat out the cigarette and crushed it underneath his feet, just then one of the new recruits was rushing past him with a crate of ammunition.
He grabbed onto the boy’s shoulder.
"Where is Varessa?"
"Captain!" The boy was shocked at first but managed to put himself together. "I believe she went up the battlement to get something."
"Alright, be quick with that, the guns aren’t going to reload themselves boy!"
"Yes sir," he said as he scurried away.
Damian picked up his rifle And looked through the scope, pointing it far past all the beasts that took the field, up until his eyes landed on the gigantic elephant that towered above everything else.
Currently, the beast was locked in a bloody battle with the vice commander, the earth rumbling each time it would take a step.
He let out a sigh.
"That is quite something..."
Damian couldn’t imagine what would have happened without the curse bearers. Surely there was little to nothing they could do to stop something of that size. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
’A nuke maybe?’
It would have been ideal but that would result in the entire population of Lorsine being burnt to ash...
Just as he was about to direct his gaze elsewhere, the torrents above him roared and multiple flashes of light exploded against the creature’s back.
’Fools!’
The torrent was useless against such a beast, all that would do was bring its attention to them!
Just as he had expected, his worst fears came true, the beast directed its gaze right at the battlement above him.
"Get down!" Damian screamed as he jumped down to the floor.
Boom!
A calamitous wave of fire shot out of its trunk in their direction like a never ending stream, engulfing the battlement in a flames.
Multiple chunks of steel exploded outwards, collapsing on the soldiers below and killing them in an instant.
The air simmered under the intense heat, some parts of the battlement as well as the torrents were melted to molten liquid that was now spreading across the floor.
Soldiers were running around, screaming in panic, their flaming bodies like walking torches.
Others were already dead and yet the fire still raged atop their corpses.
Tiiinnnnnn!
Damian staggered to his feet, his ears ringing and his vision blurry. He could hear the sound of multiple wails, some of which were calling his name.
He could still hear the sound of firing rifles but it was muffled by the ringing.
It took a second for him to finally get a sense of himself and then his eyes widened.
"Varessa!"
Damian ran towards the rubble, digging through the hit rock without bothering about his burning fingers.
Some of the soldiers rushed towards him, trying to pull him back and yet he pressed forward.
"My wife! She was up there!"
Damian’s heart twisted as fear latched onto his mind, already visions of their life together were flashing before his eyes, making them water.
"No, no, no!"
Blood was dripping from his finger and yet he kept digging, even the two men were unable to reign him back.
That was until he heard a voice.
"Damian?"
He froze, slowly turning back and then his eyes landed on a woman, the one who had called his name.
Her hair was messy, covered with dust and there was blood covering part of her face but Damian was sure... It was his wife.
Damian shoved the men aside and ran towards her, locking her in a tight hug.
He pushed himself away from her slightly and stared at her face one more time as though to ensure it was not a dream.
"H-how? You w-were on the battlement... How did you survive?"
The woman hugged him back, her head resting on his shoulders.
"All that matters is that I’m here, and you’re here." She said as a lone tear streaked down her face.

Crash!
The mammoth slammed its tusks against the floor and dragged it toward a woman, digging out a large chunk of the road and throwing it right at her face.
Thalia flew right over the strike, using her water to catapult herself into the sky.
Her battle with the mammoth was nothing short of tiring, its hide was far too thick to cut through with her scythe, every part of its body seemed like a weapon and the worst part of it was its trunk.
Countless times Thalia had almost been engulfed in flames, only managing to escape by the skin of her teeth.
Even now, the armour on her left arm had been reduced to tatters and the arm still stung after getting caught up in one of the blasts.
Her essence reserves were dwindling with each passing second and yet the beats showed signs of only moderate fatigue at best.
Just as she fell through the air, right at the beast, its trunk expanded once more just as it had done countless times in their battle, but Thalia had already gotten used to that attack by now.
She spread her hands wide apart, both palms shining blue and slowly began to pull them together.
On both sides of the beast, a massive wave of water was rising, each one large enough to completely engulf the mammoth.
"Tch. This is going to cost me a whole lot of essence."
The beast was about to unleash its flames but just before it could, Thalia brought her palms together locking them in place.
Following her will, the two waves crashed right into the elephant, completely engulfing it in the water.
Thalia landed on the floor then eyes glowed slightly as she waved her hands forward, commanding the water to flood into the trunk of the beast.
Boom!
There was a massive explosion of fire and steam, hot water blew right past her alongside a rush of hot wind that seared her skin.
The water surrounding the mammoth was completely obliterated by the explosion, leaving only steam in its wake and revealing the beast.
The fire still burned violently on its back, and the beast looked just as unwavering as ever, but—
Drip Drip
Crimson drops of blood slowly fell out of the mammoth’s trunk, followed by a massive wave, painting the streets red.
The trunk of the beast had been completely obliterated, and gone with it was its ability to breathe fire.
Suddenly, the earth trembled violently.
