Our Love Story: Hard to Guard Against the Sudden Love Strike-Chapter 362 - 343: Breakthrough
However, Sienna Thornton, who was supposed to be transferred to the detention center after half an hour, was not transferred as scheduled. Instead, she was taken back to the small room where she had met her lawyer that afternoon.
Upon entering, she saw Rhonda Wagner already waiting inside. She felt a surge of emotion and wanted to share her thoughts with Rhonda, but noticing that the female officer hadn’t left yet, she paused slightly. Once the officer closed the door and left, she spoke in a low, calm voice: "Rhonda! The scene of the crime, located in the middle section of the western suburbs, is frequently passed by large trucks carrying chemical substances or various sands from other places! Try to collect some materials from the road surface at the crime scene for analysis, and then check the four tires of my car and—"
At this point, Sienna Thornton, who had been quite emotional, suddenly slumped her shoulders, shook her head, and said weakly: "The shoes I wore that night were taken by the police not long ago. Try to find a way to apply for a forensic examination of the soles of those shoes. If the car I drove and the shoes I wore on the night of the incident don’t have the same material as the crime scene surface, see if you can persuade the police to include the forensic report as evidence. This might provide some evidence to support that I was not at the crime scene."
Rhonda watched her quietly. After she finished speaking, Rhonda smiled and said: "That night, there was indeed a large truck transporting special chemical powders that passed through the crime scene. Coincidentally, the truck did leak some material right at the traffic light on the south section of West Suburb Avenue, where you made a U-turn, and it turned into the middle section of West Suburb Avenue, so the entire middle section of West Suburb Avenue was sprinkled with this inconspicuous colored material. Similarly, it was found at the crime scene!
In the morning, we arranged for someone to take the road surface materials from the crime scene for testing and found a component with strong adhesive properties. We immediately sent your car for forensic analysis and confirmed that your car had no material matching the crime scene. As for your shoes, they’re currently being tested, and results will be out soon."
Sienna was surprised and stammered: "How did you this afternoon..."
Rhonda chuckled: "I only learned about it after seeing you and going out."
Sienna was even more astonished: "This wasn’t your idea? Then whose?"
"Young Mr. Ford left the police station at noon to collect the identification reports of your car and the crime scene materials. A friend of his might know Officer Sutton, the lead investigator of this case. He mentioned it to Officer Sutton, who immediately brought the forensic team to the crime scene in the afternoon for re-evaluation." Rhonda explained, "I only found out about this when I met Officer Sutton after seeing you. He mentioned needing to take your shoes for identification."
At this moment, Sienna felt that the suffocating material wrapping around her like a cocoon was gradually unraveling, giving her an opening, two openings. Oxygen seeped in, and she felt she could breathe and had a lot more ease.
She swallowed and murmured incredulously: "How could he think of that in such a short time? Did he visit the crime scene?"
Rhonda had no idea how Simon Forrester thought of this breakthrough, nor did she rule out someone advising him.
But Rhonda kept these thoughts to herself, saying nothing more to Sienna other than, "Because of new evidence, police agreed not to transfer you to the detention center before the forensic report is out. You’ll stay here tonight. I’ll go back and prepare additional evidence to hand over to the police first thing tomorrow morning!"
Upon hearing she didn’t have to go to the detention center, Sienna was so overjoyed that she almost burst into tears.
Although she had never been to a detention center during work and didn’t know what the ones in Brimfield were like, she had seen pictures of them in the "Criminal Law" PPT during her graduate studies.
She didn’t want to think much about that place and now considered herself fortunate not to be transferred there.
They were racing against time; any delay could lead to significant changes in the case. Rhonda said no more and quickly left the meeting room.
Sienna was taken to another small room. Inside was a small bed, a desk, and a chair, looking like a place for suspects to rest.
Two female officers escorted her inside. One stayed while the other left. The one that stayed unlocked her handcuffs with an expressionless look and said, "Your transfer to the detention center is delayed by 48 hours. There won’t be any interrogation tonight, so rest here."
Sienna smiled: "Thank you, and I apologize for you having to stay with me tonight."
The female officer glanced in surprise but quickly restrained it and sat on the chair beside her.
Sienna sat on the bed, pulling her feet up and wrapping her arms around them, resting her forehead on her knees, with her face buried.
She hadn’t rested for over thirty hours; her head ached, her heart felt uneasy, and her mind was foggy, limiting her thinking ability.
With Rhonda finding new evidence, she was relieved but still felt a sense of unease in her heart.
Nina Sinclair was dead...
Sienna still wasn’t very clear about Nina’s exact cause of death.
If it was carbon monoxide poisoning in the car, it was more likely a suicide or accident, but since she had a fierce argument with Nina before her death, it was not wrong for the police to initially investigate from a murder angle.
Nevertheless, Sienna believed in her innocence. Even though she was detained there, she wasn’t afraid of going to jail for it.
However, she still felt uncomfortable in her heart. Besides mourning Nina’s untimely death, she worried that the Sinclair Family, losing their only daughter, might blame her.
The last time two minors left a homestay, leading to its bankruptcy, she almost got expelled from the legal profession. This time, as the Sinclair Family, who gained wealth from the education industry, lost their only child, they might not let her off so easily.
Sienna muddled through these thoughts, very tired but unable to sleep at all.
She maintained her head-bowing posture, and the officer guarding her said nothing, making the whole room quiet enough to induce anxiety.
After an unknown amount of time, the door opened, and someone entered.
Sienna slowly lifted her head and saw Seth Sutton gesture for the guarding officer to leave the room.
Sienna put her feet down, slipped on her shoes, straightened up, and watched Seth warily.
Seth looked at her coldly. He strode over, yanked a chair around, and sat facing her with a reckless demeanor. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
He lounged with a casual posture that didn’t match his expression, crossed his legs, resting one elbow on the chair’s back and the other hand on his thigh, playing with a lighter.
His deep-set eyes were half-closed, occasionally glancing at the lighter in his hand, sometimes at Sienna.
Compared to last night’s stern face, now his expression was full of scrutiny.
Feeling uncomfortable under his gaze, Sienna frowned and coldly said: "Officer Sutton, if you want to interrogate me, let’s go to the interrogation room. If not, please don’t disturb my rest."
